The problem isn't in their in-game modus operandi. The problem is that they stoop to drafting Goonswarm members from other games to act as cannon fodder and sometimes use IRL espionage to gain strategic advantage. How would you like 100 batchalls per minute from teams consisting entirely from lvl 1 players on Urbies while your corp leader is being pestered by phone prankers?

P.S. Yeah, I did dramatize it a bit. A bit.

That ain't happening in faction warfare, even with dramatization.

Again, this ain't EvE Online. Many things that are possible in EvE are impossible in MWO.

I would say that your above anecdote suffers from confirmation bias. If you ran into the type of person you describe as "shut up and play the game" type, how would you know they were a goon unless they opted to tell you, especially if they have no reason to volunteer that information?

By the same token, the people out to grief would want to take advantage of what is apparently a relatively common fear that the title of "Goon" inspires. Those people would throw the word around just for the added effect it would have on their targets psyche.

And if it comes to Goon -vs- BoB, I choose Goon. At least they're funny.

Once upon a time Goons had this real funny routine: they'd let some random guy in the corp, then convince him into transfering all of his stuff into corporate storage, then just kick him out. What a laugh, right?
It's not just "If you're not in Goon your not a Goon so **** off." It means "If you're not in Goon, I can walk all over you".

BoB weren't angels, but they deserved to be given a chance to fight back.

Did you really just compare an online game to the Holocaust?

I didn't play Eve, except for beta, and I would have NEVER taken part in or condoned such behavior if I'd seen it in the Goon squads in which I took part. However, (1) If anyone gives up their property to another they have to expect, especially on the Internet where there's NO accountability, that they won't get it back. I don't even lend a book out with the full expectation that it'll be returned. (2) If Goon had ever told me that I had to give my stuff to them 'for safe keeping' or whatever, I'd have refused. Sure, I may pay my guild taxes/dues, or do my part to put things in the bank/storage, but I'd only do so after determining that I wasn't the only one being forced to do so, and I'd only give things with which I'm willing to part. If any had said, "Do this or you're out," I'd have left. Thankfully, I never saw that side of Goon when I played with them.

But, as I said above, I was never with them in a real MMO, and my interaction with them in regard to a real MMO was less than stellar. So, your point is not lost on me. Some/many Goons are barely human monsters and the worst society has to offer; Some/many Goons are awesome folks who play to win, play for fun, and are really great people to know.

Which ones are we getting in MWO? We'll have to wait and see.

No perma loss... only one planet per merc corp max, we dont even know if you can a) target individual planets or planets are choosen at random for contracts. We dont know how frequently these contracts for a given planet come up.

And honestly? If they are good enough to capture one planet then they deserve that planet.

This isnt eve where numbers really matter. Fights are 12 vs 12, you cant simply burry your enemy under a mountain of challenges because the game system itselfe creates the contracts and merc units can only take planets through said contracts and not just simply decide to attack other planets on their own.

Furthermore the devs finaly decide how far into enemy territory the different factions can actually go, i highly doubt that they will allow one faction to whipe out all competitors, they allready said that core worlds are non conquerable (if i remember correctly) so we will fight mostly about border planets.

All in all the goonswarm is less threatening in MWO then in other games because it offers less "freedom" and has built in mechanics to simply stop steamrolling.

All it boils down to is 12 of their guys against 12 of your guys... not 100 of their guys against 12 of yours. Here.. number of pilots does only very little for actuall planet captures.

In theory, they could split 96 of their 100 guys into 8 different Merc units and have them assault 8 times as many worlds as your 12 guys and accomplish many of the same goals, though.

Not if each of their squads face off against other 12-man squads who are reasonably competent. Still, there will be newbie guides and stuff on Something Awful ("DRIVE THE AWESOME IT IS OP FOR ***** NOOBS") so you could potentially expect their most trashy players to be less garbage than some random PUPPIES...

They'd still be tying up 8 times as many battles. I was just pointing out, if their plan was to dick with as many people as possible, even throwaway companies of newbies would be enough to take away a battle slot from another company.

I don't have any info on how exactly the political and planetary systems are going to work, so that might not be a very large disruption. But it'd still be a use for their 100 guys.

1) I won't argue that giving something you value to someone you don't have acces to IRL is pretty stupid. But not everyone will steal something given to them for safekeeping. If that happens, it says something about the man who did it.

2) I do understand that not every single Goon is a devil in flesh, but Goonswarm is a closed community, and closed communities tend to be pretty hostile to others. If i attack your clan member, chances are you will attack me first and ask quiestions later. And then we have a clan war, and Goons get their cannon fodder in, and do other nasty stuff - just because of one wrongdoing. And that "everyone who aren't us are getting beat up no matter who is right or what is the problem" attitude i don't like. THe fact that some folks in the clan which jus f***ing DELETED your clan are nice guys doesn't really make you feel better.

Or so we hope. We still don't have a game to see how it works, and that is THE problem

They could tie up 8 battles with newbies, but wouldn't they then still lose to a few experienced players on the PUPPY teams? I'd imagine they wouldn't be quite as nefarious and instead spam shock-pink Atlasses wherever possible, or something to that effect.

Alternatively, they could tie up 8 battles with the intention of losing them to grief roleplayers... but that would be boring.

Capellans prefer quality over quantity and skill over brawn. Commanders have a lot of power, so we aren't dependent on the higher ranks.

Now those guys are swarming their opponents with newbies in starter frigates and can't do a thing without word from one of their leaders.

Loyalty and fervor are two of the greatest virtues of a Capellan citizen, even above pure aptitude.

They will make excellent additions to the Home Guards.

I'm going to say this though - while I don't care for the Goons, they're not as horrific as people make them out to be. EVE Online is *built* to allow griefing to a certain degree, it is an integral part of the game. There are other player-run alliances and corporations that are just as bad or far worse but which receive no mention outside of the game itself. Yes, Goons have 'trolled' other games, but who cares about blood elves anyway?
