Ah yes, thank you. It is still unclear to me as to whether or not they had a notable presence in World of Tanks, however. Google is turning up a small Clan, I suppose, but then again, I only know to search for one key word related to them and that specific Clan does not appear to have a significant battle record.

*waves* Most of the Capellan players here are actually too young to remember what our first true claim to fame was in online Battletech games.

That would be when myself and a few of my Mechwarrior-loving bros helped plan the obliteration of the Federated Suns. Yes, and we did it too, eventually forcing a rollback to the original borders (something Davion managed on a regular basis via zerging, though the term wasn't used back then on GEnie).

You see, they'd transplanted the entire Activision MW1 code over to multiplayer for MPBT: EGA, and had failed to notice one flaw in how the game treated jump jets- that is, properly done you could literally stay airborne indefinitely. And the opponents were AI-driven. If you landed near them, they'd go active and attack. Of course, if you flew over their activation range, they just stayed still.

So we checked to see if it still worked (it did, poor Kelton. We told him how afterwards to fix it.), and quietly planned our assault on the FedRats on the Liao BBS, passing the word to our Kuritans bros as well.

We then picked nothing but "destroy base" missions and flew legions of Jenners over oblivious defenders, landed safely on the other side atop their bases, and blew them to hell inside 5 minutes or so each. Repeatedly, without fail. Planets flipped faster than a class full of tiddlywink players, and we conquered the Davions. ALL the Davions as they derped and herped in futile efforts to counter it. After all, we could push planetary control far, far, FAR faster than they could, even when it was 3:1 odds in their favor or more.

And after we'd stomped the FedRats a new one via traditional Capellan methods, we politely informed Kelton of how we did it, the code was fixed, but the FedRats never treated us like sub-par opponents again. They knew what we'd do if they didn't, since we'd done it once before. Like a Capellan should.

We are Capellan players. You have a legacy of staring deep into the system to understand it, then prosecuting it's weaknesses with utter ruthlessness (and afterwords, showing your work. A small amount of gloating and mustache-twirling is also Capellan). This IS the Capellan way. If Goonsquad's members understand this, and from their EvE work they do- I welcome them. We can use the help, and we do have a reputation for this sorta thing. ;) We are the original Maginificent ******** of online Battletech. The Goons will have to somehow top taking out all of House Davion to beat us old schoolers, however. Perhaps this time, we can demolish the entire Federated Commonwealth as well...

I, for one, welcome them to MW: Online. They're just a bunch of guys playing together having a great time and just dishing out cheap laughter.

I wish I could like that post multiple times up to my daily limit. Because any more would just be uncivilized.

Though I thought they were called Goonswarm, not Goonsquad?

If they're in our ranks, the proper answer is "Capellans" in the end, regardless of prior status. After all, we are the House that takes mercs and turns them into House units on a regular basis by adoption...

Goonswarm is their EVE Online contingent, in many other games they go under Goonsquad. I played with some of them in Warhammer Online, they gave me an honorary title which would be too foul to spell out here.

I'm really going to have to install a Flamer on my Atlas, just so I can continue to make popcorn for this thread.

That's up for them to decide. Things will work out more or less regardless.

Oh hey, The More I Know and all that.

And hey, if you guys like the thread, then by all means enjoy it. You deserve the talk it if you're in it.

Guys, guys, guys!

We should act like true capellans and give them a chance to earn their citizenship and show that they can act like true capellans. If they can't adapt to capellan ways, we can still start to shoot them on sight.

I think you guys have more to worry about other than who may call themselves cappies. Someone claiming to be your leader said, "Just leave the poilitics to the pros, you just go pew pew."

Example of how the "pros" do politics in the CappieCon:

THis Goonswarm is the least of your concern I think.

This is an article from 2008 about some of the goons and what they got up to (also includes others, but w/e):
http://www.wired.com...currentPage=all

My "exposure" to goons started back in 2007 when my son started visiting all kinds of websites on my computer... 4chan, SA and others (not acceptable for me, for my son - they got blocked on my computer, but I don't have any illusions that kept him off the sites...) SA intrigued me a bit. I then got into eve in 2008 and started doing a little digging, mainly learning about the game, etc., but finding out quite a bit about "the SA Alliance". Big fights, little fights mainly "just eve stuff", and no, I never fought against them or had any really terribad interactions with them at all. Just another "group" in the game.

Actually ended up getting an SA account for two years.

vOv

Most of the SA stuff is just the same as you would find anywhere else on the internet, and not of any particular greatness or value - just another community - they have topics on just about any-dam-thing under the sun. Maybe 99.5% is the same as anywhere else. From that last .5% though have been generated many of the "internet memes" that everyone else uses. Correct me if I get it wrong, but I believe "LOLcats" actually started on the SA forums - and everyone's heard of that. That last .5% also has some of the best (and I mean BEST) "stuff" on the internet. Jokes, threads, memes and internet games "propaganda". There are recruiting posters for various games, etc...

One "recruiting poster" that stood out in my mind (silly as it was) was the one where the Eve Online Goons explained how important "Logistics Ships" are in Eve. Now, we're not talking freighters and haulers, not that kind of logistics, rather the Eve equivalent of healers. Truly epic, well presented and just dam funny!

Having said all that, the SA community is probably one of the most conservative groups that I've run across in 20+ years of gaming. When someone within the community "steps out of line" as it were, they get trolled, harassed or whatever, until they make amends or change or leave... Really amazing to see it play out.

As for the "Goons" bad reputation? Well, as far as I can tell, that reputation was actively cultivated over the years by the majority of "goons". Not acted on by all, but accepted by most. So when someone who self-identifies with goons gets their back up because of the reputation that the generic "goons" have developed over the years, they should just HTFU, because that is what the goons have decided that's the face they turn to the public and revel in.

vOv

I'll leave you with a famous quote from Eve's Fanfest (by a former director of the swarm, I think): "Goons aren't out to ruin the game. They're out to ruin *your* game". A subtle but significant difference.

Not sure if you're serious here, but the SA clans in WoT are NDP, SGLE, and STUG. They also used to have MS-W, but that imploded. They've historically controlled most/all of western and central Europe. Not by NEFARIOUS MEANS as so many terrible incompetents tend to claim, but, as with Eve and other games, because they're a large, well-organized group. (Well, most of the time; judging by the SA WoT thread lately they're having a little bit of an internal tiff at the moment!)

Doesnt matter what they do, cant have much of an impact in an environment such as this..equal numbers or whatever in this match system..in eve online they have the advantage of sending tons of players to one location with tons of ships to respawn everytime..constantly..here, no way would they make it..i'd be surprised if they could even come up with a good battle plan to win 4 on 4 or 8 on 8 or whatever.

Nope, no way am i worried about goons...and i'd welcome them to try..i believe they'd get squashed by the real players in this game..the true mechwarriors

Re: Goons in Eve - Eve is basically a giant Libertarianism simulator. Expecting Goon behavior there to directly translate to every other game they get involved in is foolish. (For several reasons, two big ones being that Eve is basically custom-built on a mechanical level to encourage their shenanigans and that hardcore Libertarian types are one of their favorite trolling targets.)

My main in-game exposure to them is from WoT, actually, and they're pretty much fine there. They put up a front of seething disdain for pubbies (the full name of NDP, their premier clan, is "No Dumb Pubs"), but generally if you're capable of typing in complete sentences and playing in a remotely competent fashion they're content to leave you alone. Or more frequently work with you to win the match, actually.

About the worst they can get up to in WoT is occasional team-killing, which I think is gauche but whatever. It wouldn't be a problem if Wargaming enforced their own rules a little more stringently. They also troll anyone and everyone mightily, but as much as I get no personal enjoyment from trolling or the tears it generates, I also have very little sympathy for the victims. If someone in an online game types something that makes you mad, ignore it. Done, you win. Troll loses. End of story. Yelling back about how German tanks should always win and how Rommel was actually a pretty cool guy is not going to help, and if you don't have the common sense to realize that... well, sorry?
