So a while back I had decided to redesign the Cyclops and shelved it but more recently with all the buzz with MWO, I decided to take another crack at it. Mind you, I'm not much of a fan of the Cyclops' look and I've never taken the thing for a spin on tabletop (I haven't really played beyond a few games after the game was reintroduced as Battletech after Battle Droids) nor on computer so I'm not entirely sure how it plays.
Anyway I got my computer running finally after a few weeks of it being terribly broken and thought I'd share. Here are a bunch of thumbs I scanned in on my crappy scanner and compiled:

I'm kind of leaning towards the sensor dish version here but I'm thinking it pulls away from the Cyclops name without some kind of blatant glowing eye, so I'll probably end up with something else in the end.

It's work in progress, of course.

Some of the ideas I tossed around was the head was sort of like a turret with things like antennae and sensors coming off of it as command vehicles tend to have. Another element that I probably won't incorporate in the end is a telescoping "neck" to raise the turret as a sensor mast -which would basically place the cockpit in the neck. The original design did have a long neck though. Not sure if I want to keep that. On the right side was a pair of lasers which I mounted into a ball mount with a reinforced plate. The LRMs, I placed on top left top so it could be angled upwards to fire. I haven't quite decided how to arrange the SRMs or the AC20 yet. I figure the AC20 is going to be a fat honking weapon that sticks out a bit instead of the stubby thing that is shown in the illustrations and minis.

I want to see what you come up with in the end.

The bottom head looks like a combination of the Highlander and the Cyclops. I actually kind of like it.

Thanks for the comments, folks. I was just working on another iteration of the head but kind of lost all the work. Anyway, I just wanted to mention something after my computer blue screened (looks like the graphics card flipped out on me but I'm not sure):
Save often
I think I'm going to work on it in pencil or pen this time and scan it in. Probably won't have anything to post until tomorrow evening (it's 5am here atm.)

So I took a few features and crammed them together and expanded on the command post gear.
When I used the slotted eye, I was originally thinking about frog and sheep eyes but looking at it now, I can't help but think of the various Zentran pods and suits. Anyway, I ran with a glowy looking eye since using a sensor dish didn't really emphasize the Cyclops characteristic as well. The pilot's observation slot is a shutter style similar to tanks. I may expand it to beyond the single port again and maybe lengthen them.

"linework" done using a slightly leaky roller pen in a car. Not the worst situation to be drawing in but a challenge for decent lines which I tend to suck at without a stable environment and a little extra concentration. Colored via computer.

Does anyone know where the AC20 is normally placed on the Cyclops? It looks like maybe the right side torso below the twin lasers but I'm not entirely certain.

Thanks for the info Gun Bear!

So my frequency is going to be a little shaky for a little bit but I'll try to get things done and post where I can.
The image below is sort of a rough mass with some ideas on the torso and arms with a few details worked out. I'm thinking about slinging or angling the torso downwards a little bit more and lengthening the neck to bring it a little closer to the original design.

The way I have the AC/20 set up, it has a thick sleeve on a bull barrel. The sleeve is designed to redirect the gases (I'm not going to go into details regarding that...) Considering subtle changes to set the receiver back farther which would limit the traverse/depression but it's not like it was meant to do so to a great degree.

LRM10 comes as a set of two 5 missile pods that uses a rotary loading system which feeds through a space between them. The ammo rack sit below and loads through a gate as noted. The AC/20 would load in an almost similar fashion.

The SRM4 tubes are laid out side by side and loaded through a panel under it. Folded up right next to the ammo and behind a separate panel is a pair of articulating hands for fine work.

I'm very likely going to change up the arms. I had a thought that they're covered in a heat shedding/resistant fabric to stand up to lasers and whatever incendiaries might be thrown at it. Wasn't sure if I'd stick with that. It originally was going to just be put just behind the AC/20's gun mantle.

I went with beefy claw-like hands for the main hands since it's likely to be used for heavy work as well as PUNCHING!

As you can see, I still need to refine this stuff some more but it's all still work in progress, so...

edit: Oh. Ignore the legs and hips. Those things are even less refined as I haven't quite gotten to those as much yet. Think of them as placeholders I guess.

I like the three window ports on the very early designs, would be nice to see those worked in for the pilot's personal viewports. Really nice progress!

Not enough people take into account what is going on inside a mech when they design them. I applaud you my friend!
