Well the reason why they have an advantage is that bottleneck. Since they only have 2 ways to get there since the hill is basically hard to get up by any mech except JJ and lights. So they just have to camp there and out wait the enemies or until they get impatient and charge.

or the lower team can camp behind their respective ridge and wait for the OTHER team to get impatient........
(Heck have even camped near our base, and had a single Spider go and wait for hide near theirs. Then when they get impatient and started to come for us, the Spider would touch Cap, and look! Half the team decided to turn around and head back to base..... leaving their big uglies to get slaughtered.)

Why does everyone seem to think about the map only AROUND the Radio Tower? There is a LOT more to the lower end than just that.

Stop me if you've heard this one,

Bryan, Garth and Paul walk into the office. They say "Okay listen up Dev's, we've recently found out that a small minority of our customers do not like our Alpine Map. As a result of this we've decided to forfeit all the man hours, company resources and money that was used to make this map and just throw it in the trash. Okay now that's all sorted, have a good one folks".

Whaaaaat! wait nobody has heard this one before.

No! and your not likely to anytime soon.

Seriously, perhaps a little thought before the rage Alpine haters.

Simply put: NO!
I actually like alpine, even in my SRM Commando. Yes, it favors long ranged combat.. but that makes short range backstabbing all the more rewarding when you do it :)

And I like that it feels less... overstuffed. I don't mean map props. Caustic and Forest are also pretty empty when it comes to man made structures. But with 16 combatants, soon to be 24, the older, smaller maps always seem crowded. No real room for flanking.

Alpine is basically designed to cause boring matches. Unless both teams wait for intel before moving the bulk of their mechs out (in which case you sit there for the first five minutes doing nothing) you have better than even odds of passing eachother without contact, and even if you meet the map is asymetrial enough at the likely intercept points that it's rarely a fun fight. I don't care how tactical the match is if it's dull.

It's a difference between strategy and tactics. Strategy is setting yourself up, tactics is the actual execution (vaguely speaking).

Small maps drop you into a tactical situation. There's essentially no strategy as you are within weapons range from the get-go, and you're in the fray and chaos.

Large maps allow for more strategic level play. Setting up feints, using stall/delay tactics, luring enemies, etc.

Alpine isn't poorly designed or boring. The problem is that there's a lack of a coordinated team environment. Strategic play requires a bit of premeditation (team loadout) and experience in working together.

Some people will still consider it boring. They don't find hunting people down and killing them to be fun. They just want to box in an arena and think themselves warriors.

It could at least use a few interesting set pieces.

Alpine does seem to lack... well... pine. Some trees wouldn't be a bad addition to provide a little bit of concealment here and there.

I have an AC/40 Jag, and I still love Alpine. In fact, the only mech I ever had that had problems on alpine was a splat cat....and even then it was still fun because it was challenging.

Alpine is interesting. In many ways it lends itself to the Sniper, (My Atlas) but equally it shows up the real deficiency's of the current Sniper builds. The main issue is that the long range weapons aren't long range enough; Alpine can easily give me direct LOS at over 2k, ideal for the 4x Zoom facility that I spent my hard earned GXP on. However, I don't have access to anything that can achieve that sort of range. What is needed is some sort of Ultra ERPPC or a Gauss Rifle that can achieve the distances that it should be able to; maybe a variation on the Light Gauss.

Alpine itself is full of development opportunities. One of the other threads has already discussed using it for Escort missions or to introduce the first workable In Field repair installation (A vital point for capture, and usable by whoever captures it first). Another idea would be to introduce blizzards which would really make TI important.

Does anyone else have any other ideas?

People like the map. But yeah I think they should remove it and forget it. It is one of the worst maps they have. The other maps are better. Or atleast remake the damn map.

Alpine/Frozen maps are canon, but yes remaking the map would be very nice. While running through this one, we get stuck on snow drifts or fall into waddies that we can't even see.

It's a really bad map, but I don't think what we need right now is less maps. Voted both yes and no, because polls.

I hate this map.

However, it needs to be reworked heavily... not removed because you hate it.

Ironically, this map USED to be my bane... unfortunately another map has taken its place.

Alpine takes the longest to finish. It is harming my ability to kill people and earn C-Bills fast.

Alpine should be removed.

It may be over sized but with the changes it forces a lot smarter play.

I must say it is people that want a rush game that have been ruining things for the "hardcore" (that PGI says they love) Mechwarriors. Please stop this overall nonsense asking for things to be removed this is not Hawken, CoD or anything in that genre nor should it ever be.

Also they should not look to WoT as a model either. All the maps are fine as each brings something different to the table for tactical strategies. With the new movement impairment it goes a step further forcing a different META not a huge change in it though.

Alpine is just a large map that requires some defense and offense if played on Assault either stay at the base yourself or ask a PuG to stay if you are light heavy you know there will be a cap battle. If you are a over tonnage team have a HGN stay at the base let the rest of the team go out. If starting on the east side you can move north and then swing back around to the south easy enough. If you are the west you have to commit to one of 3 routes.

So before you beg for somethign to be removed understand what Mechwarrior is. It is closer to a SIM (not by much anymore though, bad PGI) then a fast quick kill in and out.

I will agree that Alpine over any other map needs a extra 5 minute maybe 10 and maybe a 33% timer to caps in Assault and a 15% decrease in scoring on conquest.

What alpine needs is to be removed and replaced with a smaller and more contained and less bland/open map, it's just bland boring hill humping with meta-compliant robot builds, it's boring and makes half of everyone playing it want to stop playing MWO.

I voted no because I'm a drooling ****** who thinks PGI will actually go through all the ******* forum posts here and read what i propose instead, because clearly the one or 2 people working at PGI who will read this thread won't just see that everyone voted no and think "oh so the community likes alpine  we did a good job" and not change it or anything, sorry there's spittle on my shirt I have to go wipe it off now, and maybe change my diaper, I can't tell if I pee'd myself or not in the mixture of anxiety and excitement that comes with posting reasons for voting no in a poll thread that are more in line with a yes answer than a no answer.

^^too dumb to comprehend decisions and reasoning beyond, yes / no.

also too ignorant to understand there have been many changes to different levels for balance reasons.
  • caustic: rocks and spires
  • frozen: crashed drop ship
  • river city: tunnel under high side base and road up river side
  • river city: dozens of random adjustments around bridges
  • caustic: temperature adjustments to caldera
  • river city (night): several adjustments to the lighting levels
