And that bring up an other question:

Why do they refuse the help? Many volks are able and willing!

Well judging from what I've read from them, it's because they don't think a minority of the player base like us forum posters would contribute to shaping this game according to how the silent majority want it.

I think I know why they call us the Silent Minority.

It's because we played more than 50 games. Players who actually enjoy the game enough to continue playing it are the minority.

The new patch is horrible. I know why Paul doesn't answer...

** *** ** ****!

Sad but true.

I'm sure LPL will be balanced in 2014... just in time for CW. :D

The answer to "why" was in the patch notes...to make all LPLs the same something or other compared to other pulse lasers. The trouble is that it wasn't a good reason.

SPLs, as a point of comparison, are ok to be hotter since they're still not nearly hot enough to impact DPS due to overheating, and .5 ton heavier than the SL isn't drastically affecting the mech using SPLs either. Further, their shorter pulse is actually useful for scout mechs (where SPLs are used) since 2 mechs fighting at a combined 300 KPH see value in that little bit of extra accuracy.

When we look at LPLs however, they're much hotter relative to LL and their greater burst damage doesn't compensate sufficiently to offset the heat which is important in a brawler type weapon. Also, the extra 2 tons of weight per LPL (instead of the mere extra .5 tons of the SPL) makes a significant difference in the build's overall efficiency particularly when that extra tonnage could go to more DHS to help compensate for what is already an overwhelmingly hot weapon system. Meanwhile the shorter pulse time of the LPL is pretty meaningless on the heavier mechs that typically use it as fighting at the speeds of heavy and assault mechs and being unable to put all the damage where you want it is a sign of Parkinsons and you should make an appointment to see your doctor if you recognize this important symptom. :D

So, making all pulse lasers follow the same kind of upward curve in performance doesn't really work in the real game. That's OCD thinking not game balance thinking.

The symmetry the devs sought has worked out nicely in one respect however...

SPLs: good
MPLs: marginal
LPLs: crap

This heat penalty system... wow. I can't even wow. Over 60 pages of the original feedback and the correction was this ???

AND

How is this in relation to Large Pulse Lasers, Paul?

What... the heat changes bring everything in line to favor LPLs.

Did he not convince you of that?

ERPPCs, LL, ERL, MPL, SRM6, SRM4, LRM15... and maybe a few others.

Because two of ERPPC, PPC, LL, etc. are still useful but zero LPLs remains the threshold at which they become useless?

This thread is too inflammatory to state opinion on Large Pulsers (which are a integral part of one of my most used Battlemechs).

This thread is ridiculous and embarrassing.

PGI specifically told us what they were doing with pulse lasers - the weapons were being standardized across the board in preparation for an upcoming pass on beam weapons. And yet here you guys are, b****ing at the company again for answers YOU ALREADY HAVE!

Wait. Wait and see what they do to energy weapons in the pass they told us was coming up, then harp on them. My God, I can't understand why they're even still working on this game with how poisonous and hateful you folks are...

on a side note i think cool down should include the laser duration if your going to compare dps that is. currently i feel that all lasers are inferior to ac and ppc because of this one small over seen factor. if you add the duration into the cooldown time you will see a significant reduction in dps compared to ac and ppc.

That's because their modification to LPL doesn't make any sense at all.

It's like someone put it in the build as a joke and they didn't realize until too late to change it back (because, as we all know, modifying a number from 8 to 9 is a huge chore) so instead they put some complete non-sense into the patch notes to "explain" it.

In other words, it is yet more evidence that Paul has absolutely no clue what he is doing with regard to balance.

It doesn't make sense right now because you don't have the full equation.

Maybe it'll make sense once you get the rest of the balance tweaks slated for the pulse lasers, which PGI openly admitted are being prepared for a balance pass that hasn't happened yet.

I get that screaming at Piranha, theatening people's jobs, and calling everyone in the dev team horrible names - and doing it over absolutely everything - are the 'in' thing for hip, jazzy forumites around here. But if you all just absolutely have to be howling, poo-flinging baboons as opposed to reasonable human beings, can you at least pick an issue that actually friggin' exists?
