Aslong as Darkage never came to be its fine. It could have gone a better route. as for The Jihad I'm on the fence about it. it wasn't great but it wasn't horrible either. Did shake things up a bit

well, no. the game is yet to be released, last game was years ago, last TT manual god knows when, novels the same.

If by 'TT manual' you mean rulebook, that would be 2 years ago with another one coming up (hopefully) this year. If you mean sourcebook, that would be...last month.

Jihad is like 17 years away (3067). Dark Age is almost 100 years from now at the 1 day = 1 day (3132)!

LOL :) ;)

But really, what events are really mandatory to keep this as the 'real' BT universe?

I just wish to point out, the CBT has had canon events that were influenced by real players. The Martial Olympiad series, the Commando/Agent global events where results are collected and incorporated into the storyline.

As MWO will be an official product, its not unreasonable to think it could happen.

As much as i hate that some characters i liked got assassinated or killed in combat, thats how the writers saw their end and the story..thats how the story progressed..its the BT universe, but i wholeheartedly despise the whole Jihad and age of darkness thing afterwards..if anything i'd have that erased from the history/canon in Battletech, its not even battletech anymore..not as i see it, also..the books are not obscure..if you've never read it does that mean its obscure?..if its out of print does that mean its obscure? or just highly valued by those who still have them and makes them more rare?..i have lots of BT books on shelves, in boxes and some by the side of the bed..still relevant and current to me..though i wont touch those mechwarrior books anymore.

I would just continue the story down the time lines to about 5050 that way the tech would fresh and the Dev's would have room to update the mechs and weapons the way they would like but that would require PVE if it were in MWO to tell the whole BT time-line from the first incarnation of the Battletech Universe. It would also breed allot of new and old fans being able to actually understand and play the BattleTech universe and the board games and novels as well as the PC and xbox games in a PVE/PVP/RP environment. And i know this is not a popular thing with the PVP crowd but it all links together to make Battletech much better for everyone that has never played on-line games. You could look at it like this what would STO on-line be without the movies?Or Lord Of The Rings on-line without the story?? By the way LOTR just went F2P on steam.

Plus like i have stated before the game would be much cooler with your own Character you created and all the awesome things in BT.Posted Image

I say no. If they where going to rewrite history then why have us start in 3049. Or even have lostech make it where the sessions wars never happened. Cannon is Cannon there is a little wiggle room I say use it but no major rewrites

How are the books "obscure"? They've been around for 20 years. Sure, the first print run ones are long gone, and even the second print are hard to find. But just look online. I recently bought 6 out of the 12 Original FASA novels.

It's not like this is a collection of 10 books that were only available in Norway during their 4th blizzard of the year in 1783.. It's a ton of books that strech back 25 years or so. The first ones seem to be published in 1986.

And to give you an idea of how many there are... http://www.sarna.net...ttleTech_novels

The clans are coming, we can safely assume that. Otherwise they could just start us after the discovery of the Memory Core with all the same tech.

I say no. If they where going to rewrite history then why have us start in 3049. Or even have lostech make it where the sessions wars never happened. Cannon is Cannon there is a little wiggle room I say use it but no major rewrites

What are the other canon events? What would be a rewrite? What do you consider to be the 'wiggle room'? I am still searching for the answer to this.

Why would you place your 'trust' into something that has changed on a constant basis, such as sourcebooks?
The novels came out, remained unchanged and were more coherent at any rate. If anything, you got it backwards and I think you should give them more credit. They are at least on par with the sourcebooks and not less important than you make them out to be. When all is said and done, neither books nor tabletop, nor sourcebooks will attract the new blood. It's the combination of all that makes the universe what it is. You can try to ignore the preceding MW/MC games if you want, but times have changed and you do so at your own risk. They are easily as, if not even more, important as all the other ingredients that make the BT universe.

Can you please list some examples here on how anything 'changed' in the sourcebooks? I got a pretty good stack thats not missing much, and I cannot think of any major retcon or change in the histories or stories of the BT universe. Its been pretty damn solid and consistent for a very long time. Considering the success of previous BT computer games from MW1 to Mechcommander 2 and MWLL, its pretty obvious people love the universe and love playing games set in it. If gameplay is fun and balanced, with good graphics and sound, most gamers that don't have a clue about the BT universe will probably stick with it (and who knows maybe do research into where it all came from and get hooked on that.) Hell with a large number of steampunk gothic type games out there, most players are even comfortable with a mix of advanced and primitive tech coexisting, so even that shouldn't be to much of a problem.

I see no reason to rewrite history when there is still so much history left to be (re-)played. All the Mechwarrior games so far have only covered the last 50 years or so. But there is much more in the past...just think of games set during the Age of War, the Reunificatuion Wars, 1st to 3rd Succession Wars...there is a lot a developer could do.

Just curious... what changes are you referring to?

Lincoln Osis was first described as a mechwarrior (ComStar and Invading Clans sourcebooks), he was later retconned to be an Elemental.

At the introduction of the Clans, all second line units and the provisional garrison clustrers were outfitted with Star League era mechs without any Clantech (as seen in the Clan Wolf sourcebook). This was retconned once "true" Clan second line mechs were added.

You could easily call them 'obscure'. None of them are particularly famous or popular outside of btech circles at all. Heck I've been into btech since the mid 90's as a kid and haven't heard of most of the titles you listed. Just because they've been around since I was 3 does not make them any less obscure to a lot of people. Heck I know plenty of people who love battletech and have no clue the novels even exist.

Theres probably a metric ton of people who've never played the table top game, and have only played the computer games some only having started with mech 4, who don't even know there are books about a game they know nothing about. And more and more people are going to join in on the universe at MWO as their first btech/mechwarrior game pushing the books into further obscurity.

People who've read all the books and know them all are going to become more and more of a minority than they already are, and the books are going to continue to fade into obscurity. This is the way of things. And considering all the plot armor, mary sues, favortism I have heard complaned about from different people I've gamed with over the past 20 years I don't see how thats not a good thing...

I thought these were what you referring to, but I wasn't sure.

I tend to view the Osis debacle more as errata at this point.

The second line issue was a bit of a boondoggle. But the Clans have always been afflicted by internal identity crisis on the part of the developers.

Most retcons are acceptable as they can be easily explained away as misinformation (intentional or unintentional) and indeed many such revisions/clarifications have been blamed on ComStar or WoB interference. These kind of things don't really affect anything long term, though they can be confusing and annoying. Sometimes they are trivial and sometimes they are used to fix simple errors (or writer incompetence.)

But, I do instinctively distrust anything that basically says, "That never happened" or, "Here's what really happened*" in regards to important events. Thankfully, BT has been pretty good about it unlike other franchises (I am looking at you, Highlander, and almost every superhero comic book ever written.)

The established PF is awesome and should be respected.

But.

This is an amazing opportunity for emergent gameplay and storytelling and you just can't ignore that! The BattleTech universe deserves more than what it's got in recent times.

Not sure I understand this point.

You wouldn't need to have people "rewrite" the story... because the players would be doing that.

Players can only have an effect on the outcome of a battle. They have no influence on what political, economical, etc. reactions this might trigger. Plus, you will still need a general idea of what is going to happen if a campaign is successful or a complete failure. This includes introducing new characters to the universe as old time favourites might get killed in the course of a battle or they simply loose their power or never get to be in charge in the first place. Making up stuff on the fly will most certainly lead to giant holes in the story. That's why I think PGI would need a team of story writers.
