I understand that people have high expectations of graphics these days. I know that one "realistic" thing in most modern games is various atmospheres. From a purely visual standpoint, the different levels of fog, smoke, or whatever, looks GREAT. However, I was just dropped in the lake map, on a "foggy" day, and the #1 game difficulty becomes seeing anything over 300 yards. I might see a red arrow on the hillside, and beneath it is just a blur of tones of grey. There is nothing between me and the enemy.... I think, but basically the fog is overwhelming. I have had trouble in the past, with dark colors, (black/green/blue) so perhaps I'm slightly colorblind, so I'm honestly wondering if others feel the same. I would honestly LOVE it, if they just dropped the atmosphere for gameplay sake, and every day was crystal clear. Old MW games had clear days, simply because the tech did not exist... I honestly feel its a visual frill, we should say goodbye to.

Oh and FYI, I play on MAX settings, 1650 pixels or sumthin, and literally am jamming my monitor in my face, The only time on a foggy map I can see, is if the guy is cool enough to have a bright pink mech. Otherwise, even on max settings, all those pixels, are just a blur of greens and greys.

Ya it is pretty annoying.

I railed Thomas pretty hard when they moved away from bluewarrior as it would be hitting the brown spec against the brown background.

I was not wrong. (except for caustic which has a green wash).

Just curious; is it still better to play on low settings to see better? I remember when people used low settings that trees, building, and other things sometimes wouldn't load at a distance, allowing you to see enemies. Also, the fog/haze was reduced. Is this still the case?

I dunno man, turning down settings was my first idea, but as I remember it did not help...... I will try again, fooling with settings, maybe... but it seemed like the atmosphere was baseline, and unaffected.

Well, they might have fixed it. Like I said, people were using it almost as an exploit. So, the devs might've fixed that. But, who knows...

Looks great on mine. The fog in snow city is intentional - use thermals. It swirls in and out so there are moments where its clear.
Just like forest colony is twilight low light.

Everything else looks great. I can see and could snipe from 2k+ distance if the weapons allowed.

e_ViewDistRatioCustom = 100

I hear putting this in your user.cfg works for maps where it is able to see far.

yes its still easier to see distant targets with graphics turned to lowest settings. i didnt really believe it till i tried it myself the other day.

The fog/haze is a choice made for "gameplay" purposes. I know in the user.cfg file you can remove the depth of field (which they also think is tool they can use to affect gameplay, probably to stop snipers from being able to pinpoint their shots, but clearly it's avoidable at the moment).

Anywho. It's not actually 300 meters. I can stand at epsilon and snipe people at kappa with my ac/20 in forest colony.

What if I set it to 1000?

You think that's bad?

Imagine what color blind players have to go through every second in this game.

The target lock HUD is red...in maps that are mostly yellow and green backgrounds. Yeah..we don't see it.

Blue chat text on translucent black backround in the midst of mostly grey/brown air... yeah..we don't see that very well.

200 is the mex for cryengine, 225 even, but its capped at 100 in MWO. you wont see further even if you up the number.

turn DoF to 1 or 0, that'll fix the grain.

I agree we could stand a little more colour vibrance and definition overall.

I turned the gfx profile to very low simply for the reason that it's much easier to acquire targets. There's no smokes or anything on caustic middle, i don't need nightvision on for night maps. There's like 1/4 of the trees on forest colony so you easily see mechs trying to "hide" in them. Only thing that hampers vision a bit is frozen city day time when there's the foggy thing, but it's minor.

Try it out. Never cared for graphics anyway, it's all about gameplay and minimalistic graphics makes it easier to kill people.

I enjoy blowing up mechs but in an immersive world.

Horses for courses I suppose.

I understand the need to have maps where you can't easily smile from a thousand meters, but I really wish they would use actual geometry on the map to create cover, rather than relying on fog and junk that just ends up making you squint at your screen, or turn down your graphics.

Back when I first joined the closed beta, forest colony was actually clear and sunny. It was so much more fun to play on when you could actually see stuff.

Eh?

All maps have terrain cover.

Only one map has fog. And two maps are low light but as a means to diversify maps and create a different atmosphere but we still get clear daylight versions of those maps. Just like we get snow city at night where it's crystal clear.

Fog, atmospheric conditions just add to the immersion if the world, not as a crutch for something missing, which there isn't in this case. All fighter pilots want clear blue skies but they can't control the weather or time of day.

This isn't gameplay balance worthy, moving thread.
Edit: I think also that they are making a color blind mode soon.

I hate the environmental graphics. I mean, like Roland said, I get why they're there and they do add some asthetics to the game. But on Forrest Colony, I can't see a damned thing when I zoom in unless somebody makes the mistake and paints their mech bright yellow. The haze in Frozen City is even worse.

I can snipe targets across the entire map on caustic. Just sit still and look for movement. If you're having trouble seeing through vapor clouds, switch to NV optics and enemy mech outlines will pop out at you.

You may be blind. But seriously just turn off particles. Make sure Vsync is on so there is no tearing and you keep smooth fps. Also not at my desktop currently (on phone) but turn off any fancy settings other than antialasing and keep the graphics at max. You should be able to see better. Also maybe turn up your monitors contrast and mess with brightness?
