Therefore we need both hardcore MechWarrior fans in the beta as well as plenty of joe bloe random person who signed up for the beta.

This I also understand.. but it seems the world to me a LOT of seriously longtime hardcore supporters (unless we are all lying to each other) have not gotten in.. Which basically means we all have terrible luck and need someone to tilt the balance in our favor.. we arent talking a lot of people.. maybe 100-200 and it would be pretty easy to figure out who we are.

Simply if you can name our call sign off the top of your head without being in the forum then you know we are a little more "crazed" than the others.. and deserved of your pity. :(

Um. Who said I said I was talking about you? lol. When I talk about people in particular I quote them; I didn't quote anyone in my post.

I know a couple people have looked at my post count and have inferred that I have some kind of superiority on the forums. I usually then just educate them as to the "Post counters means absolutely nothing more than how many times a person has posted" speech. :(

Russ (and Bryan too),

I understand, but you guys KNOW there is a small group of us (well under 500) that have been HUGE Fans, and been spending countless hours promoting this game and giving it the word of mouth it justly deserves.. Most of us have over 150 posts (some a few more than that..) , most joined before February, have been personally trolled by Paul, and have been active for months on everything from facebook to twitter, etc..

Even a few of us even bought GDC T-shirts during that small window they were available.. so you KNOW we are going to be around a while.. and spend at LEAST $60 but probably a good bit more.

So YES, I understand the whole "fairness" thing.. and making it random. Also understand in not wanting to set a precedent for those that want to complain, and beg, etc..

But there is also a Fairness quotient for those of us that have been supporting you guys and spreading the good word for MONTHS. At this point almost 5000 keys have been issued, yet many of your hard core supporters sit here hitting F5.

So just saying it wouldn't hurt to give a few of us keys because if anything we will be the most tight lipped, and probably provide a lot of really good feedback that the random 12 year old will not..

I mean if you can do friends and family, you can obviously manually add some people to the Beta.

OK fine... I will quit begging.. because if this rational argument doesn't work, no amount of begging in the future will either. I know I seriously quit being rational in regards to MWO a while ago.. but thats beside the point.

Although I would love nothing more than getting a key along with all the other "hardcore fans", I doubt there's a fair way of doing that. If you give everyone who joined before February a key, then the guy who joined on February 1st will yell that he also wants to get one. If you give everyone with 500+ posts a key, then guys like me who have been around from the start but only post when they REALLY have something to say will yell for a key. So how should the Devs know who "deserves" a key and who does not?

Exactly.. its not the posts.. post count simply means we have no life and have been waiting for this game since virtually it was announced (In 2009 how else did we find the forum literally within days of it launching.. )

It just means we are a little more passionate about Mechwarrior than is probably healthy..

You know what I love the most?

That the President of Piranha Games is the second reply to this thread to assuage your fears that the developers might not be taking beta testing seriously enough.

If that doesn't show the dedication that PGI have to developing a true Mechwarrior title, I don't know what does.

Yet people are still complaining.

Joe Bloe here.

One point to ponder: If they let too many people into beta, they will spend too much time sorting through repeat bug reports and not enough time making the game better. Less quantity, more quality beta testers is best, and "best quality" means an acurate representation of your playerbase which will include a healthy smattering of "Joe Bloe"s such as myself.

Random is the best way to do this.

Not that I am disagreeing.. there is no simple way..

Just that there are a number of posters on the forum, that have helped drive the word of mouth, be it on the forum and it other places.

Some created their own supporting websites.. NGNG, Mechspecs, etc..

Some have been supporting the forum as moderators (and I REALLY cant believe some of them aren't in the beta.. but if they are to be believed they aren't)

Some have gone outside of the forum to promote the game in other forums, and web sites..

Etc.. etc.. etc..

The thing is you can't replicate what some have and have not done.. but after 6 months, they know who is in that small group and who has spent a lot of their time promoting and supporting this game.

The real key here though is with the NDA.. no one would know if we got in anyway.. and as rabid as we are.. you would be sure we would not leak a word that we got in.. we would be too busy :(

I have never seen a Beta for a game before that had this many people feeling this entitled about their right to be selected. O_o

Actually World of Tanks closed beta was similar. Which was surprising considering it had zero history compared to the BT/MW franchises. I think it's partially a gamer thing and partially human nature.

Both of you use the word honor in your posts.

This is just a game, to use the word honor is laughable. It's a reminder to me how petty gaming is and that it is a small part of my life. It should be a small part of most peoples lifes, because it is in the grand scheme of everything going on in the world, just a computer game. One of many to come this year, one of many to exist in your lifetime.

Honor and frustration because self entitled players are now poking holes in what has been, until now according to you guys, a very well excecuted community support. Funny how when a few players, who get their hopes up, don't get what they want and start finding faults in a game they were preaching about yesterday.

As I said in a comment earlier today, i reply to people saying this forum was behaved. My reply was, it is the so called strongest fans and veteran players that eventually say strong words in forums. Not random newbies trolling. It is the players who think they know best, they somehow know a better way to handle a multiple million software development and the execution of bringing the first users into that software.

You know what. Don't start ok. Everyone will get in the game very soon.

I'm going to say this again, because apparently once in every other "where's my beta key for being a big BT/MW fan" thread isn't enough:

Near-release closed beta is NOT "early access for fans" or any kind of congratulatory reward or prestige title, it's just a random userbase sampling with the intention of testing server architecture and working out any final lingering bugs and balance issues; most major balance changes are doubtlessly going to occur during open beta, where the masses of players will surely begin their attempts to exploit builds and assorted things even the CBT players didn't think of, and that's the way this has always been.

So step back, let the CBT folk do their job, pray you're not forever pending, but get off your "I'm a longtime fan I deserve this" high horse.

It is great if people promote the game. I wish I had time to promote it on my gaming sites and put ads in my software but this game is coming at a busy time for me. I will promote the game later once my busy period is over. If I did manage to do so months ago, I would not expect a beta key in return or would I make a post using the word honor as if beta testing is THAT big a deal.

I agree for fans its exciting. But they as per usual many start to bite the hand that develops for them instead of being understanding.

Here we folks, we are nearing the time when this forum becomes unsuable, unless you like pain!

I was in the SWToR Beta and they had a pretty good setup. They invited different players each week on a weekly basis and there was a downtime each week. Initially I was invited to a Server Stress Test with thousands of other players in an attempt to crash the server. While playing the game, I would get questionaires. I stopped what I was doing and filled them all out as they arrived. Next week, I was invited to the closed beta. I kept giving the devs feedback through the questionaires and they kept re-inviting me each week.

As for the lost Mech sim for the past 10 years. Yep that is puzzling. It seems like if you wanted an action 3PS shooter RPG there were thousands to choose from. Why make giant robot games into 3ps action games also? I think that marketing for games has just really misread the market, lumping giant robot simulations in with flight and car sims when they are rightly their own unique genre. My last disappointment was Front Mission Evolved. No cockpit view, no giant robot feel, and definately no simulation qualities. I played it once and not interested in playing it again because it's just a 3PS shooter. They could have substituted people for the wanzers and it would have played the same.

Anyway, every beta is different, except that they ramp up the invites after a few weeks because they need to see how the game performs for masses of players. Most MMO's spend the first couple of 'Live' days offline half the time anyway, in spite of all the beta testing.

IMHO, since they're launching in NA first, they're reducing their selection to people from that region. :)

Untrue, there's been multiple mentions in early beta key threads of non-NA players getting invites to closed beta.

Remember guys. A person's negative opinion of something that you like is NOT an assault on you.

For you to take it personally is a psychological act of transference. It's OK for people to like what you don't and vice versa. Don't take it as an attack on you. I can't count how many times I see something like that in forums.

I hate Coke, you don't. It doesn't mean I hate you.

It just means you have bad taste in cola.

(heh heh heh, j/k) :)

Although the Devs are quite active on the boards, I don't think they know every guy that has done something to promote the game or to help in some way. How ever you turn it, it will be unfair for some of us. The best way IMO (but I don't know if the board-software would support something like this) would be to give everyone a key who has been an active member for some time. You could take one point in the past where it would be most likely everyone who is interested in the franchise could have cought wind of the game (let's say 3 months after announcing it) and then take everyone who logged in at least once per week or so. But that is also just a construct to please some of us who can't wait for the game to be finished. The best way to please us would be to finish the game ASAP :)

Btw. it doesn't grieve me that someone with no posts or who only recently registered gets a key while I don't. Those guys have as much "right" to get one as do I. What really bugs me is the fact that some of the keys aren't even used and some of the lucky ones that got a key have nothing better to do than break the NDA leaking videos and stuff, only so they can show how bad they are at piloting a mech. And what really bugs me is the fact that some people sell their freaking beta key for money while we sit here and can only dream of getting one.

Yes, this is an honor and a responsibility. Take suggestions from other users and think about how they would feel in game, cause you are the only ones who can. If you think they would have use in-game, then suggest it. If it would be a waste of time to add it, don't suggest it. And most importantly: DO NOT BREAK THE NDA!!

I'm not convince it is random, at least not entirely.

</tinfoil hat>

It is random:

1) Game review sites get 1st crack at Beta.
2) Friends and family get 2nd crack at Beta.
3) Players (around 10 probably) get last crack at Beta.

Sorta like Government job positions, they have to offer to 'the public" even though the position(s) already filled.

BTW around 6000 total keys out for MWO, TSW just released another 8000 keys for it's third beta.
