You can blame clan tech for the fafnir.
Super specialization was the only way IS could compete with overpowered clan crap.

That's nearly equal to a Dire Wolf prime in best long range firing setup (3 Clan ERLL, 1 LRM10, 2 UAC-5 = 42 heat vs 22 DHS [44 heat]) A Dire Wolf can further push the envelope by double tapping both UAC-5s but they can jam so it becomes too "unreliable".
But in a comparison between the Fafnir and Atlas. The Fafnir only does 50 damage with twin HGRs BUT at only 180 meters. A cunning AS-7K mechwarrior can keep range till one of those massive Gauss rifle take a critical hit, and they can explode.

LOL.
First, the Fafnir was a product of the FedCom Civil War. A decade past the 'overpowered clan crap' being introduced.
Second, Clan tech is only over powered if you throw BV2 out the window and allow for free customization. Which, judging by your post people you play with do.

Min range: 4
Short range: 6 (25 damage)
Medium range: 13 (20 damage)
Long range: 20 (10 damage)
Explodes for 25 damage when hit.
Side torso only weapon.
You can actually FALL over for firing that weapon.
Massive weight.
Poor ammo per ton.
And guess what ? The Fafnir mounts 2 of them.
If you wanted to deal 20 damage at 13 Hex max, a LB-20x using slug ammo will do the same deal.
At 12 Hexes and 4 tons lighter.

Though I'd much more prefer regular Guass to Heavy Guass...
I'd say skip the Fafnir and go for the Thunder Hawk (500BV less, so you can bring a Light or something for spotting/harassment and protection)

Actually long rang is the last thing a Fafnir would want. The heavy gauss guns LOSE damage the further out they reach, they only do 25 points of damage at 180 meters or less (or 6 hexes in TT), drop to 20 points out to 390 meters (13 hexes) and then go down to 10 points up to its max range of 600 meters (20 hexes.) Since it only mounts med. lasers as backup weapons (it isn't mounting PPC's unless it gives up 1 or both of those HGR's that weigh 18 tons apiece) its actually better suited to medium and short range fighting then a long distance duel. In fact an Atlas AS7-K, with 2 ER lg. lasers, a regular gauss, and an LRM 20 would have an advantage if the fight was a long distance duel, especially as the HGR's could cause the Fafnir to fall on its face. Heck the Thunder Hawk or Devastator would be better choices for powerful gauss rifle platforms.

The technological arms race came about due to the clans, are you seriously trying to deny that?

I don't even play the TT, I'm talking about videogames, you know, like MWO. Clantech has been overpowered in every MW game so far.

fafnir loses all day, you have 2 huge target rings on your chest, hitting them causes you catastrophic pain. my atlas can mount large lasers G rifle and lrms, and just peg you in your hg **** till they blow up and cripple you, meanwhile since i had you rockin you couldnt accurately fire your hgs at me before they blew up. game over, atlas wins its weapons are stable safe and reliable at long range.
