The mechlab site has the numbers a bit off, but in the game I'm getting 77.1 firepower. That's more than most assaults.
To start off with, we have 2 Large Pulse Lasers, 2 SRM 6 (2t ammo), 2 Machine Guns (1t ammo), LRM 20 (2t ammo), and an AMS (1t ammo). Full armor minus .5 tons on the legs. The rest of the weight is DHS. Also has Endosteel.
This build has HUGE amounts of versatility. Start off the match softening up targets with LRMs. Pretend you're an LRM boat, but don't stay too far behind the front lines. After you're out of LRMs, then it's time to go hunting. This mech doesn't work that well as a finisher, as it can't do alphas very well. However, it does strip armor very reliably. At mid ranges, rely on the pulse lasers. Don't bother with anything else. Once it becomes a brawl, Switch to the SRMs and the Machine Guns. Leave the lasers to when you can slice off a component or nab the kill. Pop off your shots then turn your torso. Rinse and repeat.
I have the lasers on group 1, machine guns on 2, SRMs on 3, and LRMs on 4.
The downside of this build is heat. If you're only using one weapon system at a time, it's manageable. If you need to alpha, make it count, because you're gonna have a lot of heat to bleed off. At midrange, you can duel pretty well with high alpha builds. You have room to dodge and cool down. If you're going up against a gauss/ac2 Jager at long range, hide. If you're going up against an AC20 jager at close range, run away. If you catch either of these at midrange, the mixture of lasers and LRMs can really help you outpace them.
I've also done this build with a standard 225, giving you 48.6kph, which really isn't that bad, but the extra survivability is minimal.
You want to hunt heavies and mediums. You can put a decent hurting on lights when they come by between the lasers and SRMs, but don't chase them. Against assaults, play hit and run.
Play this build wrong, and you will be punished harshly. I think this applies to all Orion variants. It is very unforgiving.

Currently my VA looks like this ON1-VA and works pretty well, I generally dont use large pulse lasers but I wanted a solid defense against lights without using up too much weight. I might drop a couple DHS for ART at some point though. I also just unlocked speed tweak for my VA, lemme tell ya this thing you must do it asap doing 80kph with a 340XL and helps with the CT bullet magnet.
-----------------------------
On a somewhat unrelated note, iv had a bit of fun with the Orion's designation of ON1 - as it looks like "oni" or demon/ogre, and orions do have a lumbering misshapen ogre feel to them

That is of course also a nice build, but I am a big fan of the Mega-Shotgun at the moment.
Concerning my build, after a few rounds I can say that it is very funny and quite succesful. The short range punch is really awesome and heat management is no issue, even on terra therma. The durability of the chassis is also really good, and since the srms + ballistic are in your torso, you remain lethal even without your arms.

Basically a really simple setup 2 PPC 1 Uac-5 nothing fancy just a great fire support 'mech. I have found that once you get full elite on the 'onion' it really isn't a bad 'mech you just have to be smart in positioning and be careful with the heat.
also I think I am going to try and build some more MAD clones (3M & 3R should be doable)

Improved - while I do sometimes put ammo in the CT of my BJ-1, I wouldnt do it with my own orions. The ON1's ct is a damage magnet more then anything and you REALLY dont need anything further increased your odds of getting killed by a ct shot. I droped a ton of LBX ammo, moved the srm ammo to the left leg and the head then spread the remaining point into leg armor, no one ever legs a orion but better safe then kersploded. Though with your setup you could probably do a XL pretty easily for something like this though even with that insanely large engine im not sure if any orion should be actively trying to get within brawly range.

thanks for your tips and improvements, i used the std because im new in this game and the XLs are really expensive
Would it be better to use another range weapon than srm? Maybe LRM instead of SRM?

ON1-K-MAD with LB-10x & UAC/5, I swapped to this: ON1-K
Which removes the PPC's, LB, & ML's, then replacing them with 4 LL's and as many DHS as will fit. It is > 5 tons light, which is unfortunate, but until we get Clan DHS, there isn't much more to do. It doesn't need Endo-Steel, but removing it only gains me 1 more DHS, then I'm outta space.
If I keep this, I'll likely remove the Endo & put an even larger XL motor in there :
ON1-K-SHOOTING STAR. Swap out the BAP for another DHS if y'want.
I've done much, much better with the 4xLL load out than w/ the MAD-wanna be.

Yeah XL are pricey little buggers I was fortunate to have one left over from my time in the Quickdraw trenches. I do whole heartedly approve of LRMs on the orion as my own Ogre makes extensive use of them. Honestly im not a big fan of the hip guns of the orion/atlas and tend to drop them in favor of large weapons elsewhere hmm lets see a cheap alternative.....
After some tinkering with my own ON1-K I came up with Babeh Ogre , note the use of a LRM10+LRM15 instead of two LRM15's, reason for this is if you use two LRM15's you get two solvos of missiles that can spread damage, but the LRM10/15 fire and converge very nicely to focus damage alot more, though keep a eye on the LRM10 is recycles faster then the LRM15 and if your dealing with AMS you want to fire them together not seperately. I tossed in a couple of CASE to protect your sides from the ammo in the arms, as I do in fact get my arms shot off ALOT but if your strapped for cash/feeling ballsy you can go without them.

Yeah, the placement of the ballistic slot really limits what kind of weapons to use. I'm running just 2 machine guns on my ON1-V. I find that the energy and missile slots should get all the attention, as you have so many of them. Then use the ballistic to compliment the other weapons. Gauss and AC20 are just too much of a weight/slot sink and will cause you to neglect your other slots. I've done well with either 2 machine guns, 2 ac2s, or an LB10X.
