STD315
3 MLs
LB-10x (3T)
2 ASRM6s (2T)
12 DHS, Endo, FF
You could even drop FF and throw an XL360 in there for some 85 kph shenanigans. But then I remembered that Orions suck at brawling. Oh well, maybe after PGI tweaks the CT hit box.

The ON1-P Shooting Stars
Yes, double LB-Xs. The idea is to just spray a mech down head to toe and go for crazy crits.

ON1-VA Demon III is based off my tried and true ON1-VA Demon II. This models BAP should not be removed, its extremely important for the streaks. Finally was able to do some extensive testing of my Demon III and it also gets a stamp of approval but its not as well suited for one on one brawls due to spreading damage a lot, destroys spiders with extreme prejudice however.

This another very successful build that I've landed on since the pulseboat. It is essentially two classes of mechs melded in one chassis, a long range harasser and a close range brawler.
You use the ERLL and AC10 to soften up targets in the early stages of the game and join in the brawl with 2x ML and 2x SRM6'es later on. It has 15 DHS, and they are mostly sufficient. In prolonged brawls heat management becomes an issue though, so keeping two Cool-Shots in reserve is recommended.

the concept is simple. Punching power at short to mid-long ranges, lots of armor and high(er) speed than the ordinary version.
And yes, it costs an arm and a leg to create, XL engine has its weaknesses, and there is no AMS, but as long as you keep moving from cover to cover it should be fine.
Overheating is a bit of an issue, until all efficiencies are unlocked.

(did that link work?)
This is my tricked out Orion, it's got all the bells and whistles! (It has every single upgrade!)
It's got max FF armor, a tough standard 300 engine, ES upgrade, and it is my favorite Orion I've played in.
1 LBX (1 ton ammo)
4 MLs
1 LRM15+A (2 tons ammo)
1 SRM6+A (1 ton ammo)
300 STD (2 extra dbl HS)
I do have an issue with tonnage, though. I'm at 74.9 and that irks me. Is there any tips, comments or advice on this thing? Maybe I could improve it somehow or fix that lousy .1 ton?

Armament:
The only weapon that is preserved from the original Orion is the SRM-4, though that is upgraded to a lighter-weight Offset Pattern K4 model. The autocannon and long-range missile launcher were upgraded to an Omega 12-Coil Gauss Rifle and a Type XX "Great Bow" LRM-20, respectively. The arm-mounted lasers were replaced with a pair of ER Large Lasers, one a Series 6W and the other a Series 7W. These upgrades have transformed the Orion from a close-range brawler to a fire support 'Mech.
Lore Build
Now while this build is not limited to the protector alone (They all have the necessary hardpoints), it does not have enough tonnage to remain a viable build, both concerning in heat and armor. In addition, ammunition becomes a problem for extended engagements. Making a few modifications, and keeping true to the fire support role that the orion fills so well, I made the following:
Revised Lore Build
It's simple, but works beautifully. You are effective at all ranges, rarely have to be concerned about heat, and while you may have trouble going head-to-head against an atlas, brawling is still a viable option (thanks to the hitbox fix). This build really shines at the 200-900m mark as you can augment your gauss and LL fire with a salvo of your LRMs for that finishing blow.

Thoughts?
Also I am not entirely sure if I should get an Orion, or if I should get an Atlas. Thoughts on that as well please.
I have always liked both but I feel if I get a Atlas I'll just be a bigger (literally and figuratively) target which is why I have been thinking about the poor mans Atlas.

As Spheroid says, your heat efficiency is very low. With MPLas and SRMs, it looks like you're aiming for a brawler, so you'll be hamstrung by such a low heat efficiency. I would also say you haven't got nearly enough ammo. You've only got 20 full volleys of SRMs and 30 shots for your ACs.
To be honest, I personally wouldn't recommend running an XL on an Orion built for brawling anyway. Like on an Atlas, your side torsos are very juicy targets.
As for Orion versus Atlas, really it depends on what role you want to fill. The Orion is tough, but it can't tank damage nearly as well as an Atlas. However, it is far more nimble, especially once you've unlocked all the Elites.

I want to slap in an XL engine because I personally do better with speed.
Firstly, you've got both endo and FF on that build, so you can't actually fit an XL. Apologies if you've already bought it, but FF is pretty worthless on an Orion. You're barely saving a ton and a half, and using up far too many slots.
I'd suggest trying this instead:
