The engine can be critted. It has 15 HP, but other than being a buffer it has no use/effect or notification of destruction. The heat sinks stored inside of an engine won't be destroyed if the engine pops, and they contribute their crit slots to the component.
This is only really interesting from a theoretical standpoint. Take the Atlas D/K (or any variant storing ammo for some reason). With a 350 engine and 4 DHS, it creates a CT with a 55 HP buffer that takes up 18/20 critical slots.
This is along the same lines of what I'm saying. I feel like having heatsinks added to the engine (or any other items stored in your CT, really) might kind of give you more total HP to your internal structure - assuming some of the hits you take roll critical strikes.
Here's an example:
Case one: My Jenner takes an AC10 shot to the CT, which has no armor left. The hit does not roll a critical. The 10 pts of damage are applied directly to the CT internal structure.
Case two: Same scenario, but the AC10 shot lands as a critical strike on my in-engine heatsink. The heatsink itself takes 8.5 pts of damage, and my CT internals take 1.5 (as of the patch a few weeks ago, 15% of critical damage is applied directly to the structure). The heatsink has saved me from taking an additional 8.5 points of damage to my CT, and has possibly saved my life!
I might be wrong - to be honest, I've always been a bit hazy on how crits work in this game and there aren't many good posts explaining it - but if I'm right, it
does give you a reason to store stuff in your CT.
