How is each map chosen for play, and is there anything I can do to influence? I'm tired of getting the same map 20% more of the time.

It's random. Nothing you can do about it- Yet. A map vote feature is coming eventually.

Random does not mean your next map will be different then the previous one, a flipped coin won't be heads-tails-heads-tails but if you do it a hundred time it'll balance out, more or less.

I must be extremely unlucky then, as I have played well over 300 matches, and the numbers are...well not balancing out.

Is it possible for the devs to crank up certain map frequencies? eg: Let's see if people like HPG, make it occur 10% more often for 2 weeks.

They certainly CAN edit the map rates- They used to put the newest map on a higher chance but have not done so for the last few maps, probably because then people get the new map too much.

If I recall there's balance weights that lean one way or another. Usually a new map is very low-chance of occurring, then it goes for two or three patches with a super high chance of occurring, and balances out eventually. Even so maps are ~not~ weighted equally. Note it was Feb 2013, I think, since the last stat wipe. Possibly later.

Even so Forest Colony is the first map ever created for the game (that I know of) and for 3 months of me playing it, the only map to exist.

MAPS STATISTICS
Map Name | Matches | Wins | Losses | Ratio | Time
Forest Colony | 389 | 194 | 195 | 0.99 | 1 day 03:56:46
Frozen City | 412 | 217 | 195 | 1.11 | 1 day 07:54:7
Caustic Valley | 408 | 223 | 184 | 1.21 | 1 day 09:30:50
....etc.
River City 377 181 195 0.93 1 day 01:47:29
Forest Colony Snow 379 203 176 1.15 1 day 03:37:51
Frozen City Night 368 211 153 1.38 1 day 03:43:16
River City Night 399 199 196 1.02 1 day 04:13:46
Alpine Peaks 483 226 254 0.89 2 days 03:58:15
Tourmaline Desert 705 320 381 0.84 2 days 19:35:23
Canyon Network 426 220 206 1.07 1 day 12:01:25
Terra Therma 175 92 83 1.11 18:05:07
Crimson Strait 130 62 67 0.93 11:32:15
HPG Manifold 6 2 4 0.50 00:27:14

Wee!

If I choose not to buy any MC, how boned am I going to be? Is MC just a way to get better mechs faster, or is the worst MC mech just vastly superior to the best one I can get with in game cash?

Its not pay to win. Just pay not to grind. I've never paid a cent and I feel like I still come out pretty well.

To add to what Darth Futuza said:
The only useful things that are not available for cbills are hero mechs are mechbays.
Hero mechs are no stronger than their comparative variants, just different.
You do not need more than the 4 mechbays you start with, but buying more lets you hold on to mechs that you liked while still being able to play with other chassis.

Some things, like the consumables or champion mechs look like they are not available for cbills, but can be duplicated without.
(exception: the 10% xp boost champions get, but that is not overly useful past a certain point unless you are willing to spend more money to convert xp types)
IE: the cbill airstrike can be upgraded with gxp to match the MC only airstrike.
Champion mechs are the same as their cbill equivalent (IE cent9-A(c) is the same as a cent9-A non-(c) ) but come pre-upgraded and with a 10% boost to xp earned.

NO! You never really NEED to buy MC. The C-Bill mechs are almost always (arguably) at LEAST as good as the Hero/MC mechs. Many times the C-bill variants are superior. The only real significant plus to the MC mechs is that they allow you to accumulate C-bills faster. With the new cadet bonus this isn't really necessary for a new player. When I started, I almost HAD to buy a hero mech since there was no cadet bonus and I had to pay R&R everytime I got wtfpwn'd.

So save your money, unless there's a Hero you really feel drawn to.

There are a few things that are MC only.
  • customization (colors, patterns, decorations)
  • champion mechs (XP boost only)
  • hero mechs (C-bill boost, different hardpoints but well balanced)
  • mech bays
  • premium time
  • xp conversion
Some of those things you never "need", xp conversion, premium time and champions only serve to get you ahead quicker; Heroes are similar plus they look fancy plus they have different loadouts but are not neccesary.

Mech bays are a different story; you need to either buy mech bays, or keep only four mechs, or maintain a stable of multiple accounts to hold more mechs.

I do recommend making some small investments along the way, but maybe not until you've played enough to fill those 4 mech bays and need to buy more.

^^ This is true.

Mech bays are really the only thing I've ever considered buying. But...meh I don't play THAT much.

Can I sell my Cataphract and still unlock master? I currently own 3 ctf, 1x, 2x, and 3D. I have unlocked elite for all 3, but not master for any yet. Could I sell the 2X now, and still unlock master for the 1X and 3D even though I would only own 2 of them?

The answer actually changes depending on whether you have other mechs in the same weight class. to unlock master you need to complete all the elite efficiencies for three mechs in the same weight class. if you have other heavies with elite progress you dont need to buy all the elite skills for all three cataphracts, otherwise you still need to complete all the elite skills on three mechs of the same weight class.

Hi. I havent played in a while because in all honesty, the IS mechs kind of suck. Kind of very very hard. A K2 or even a Stalker is not even scratching on being a match for a Daishi or a Mad Cat, which we apparently get now. My question is - will everyone be able to aquire the proper mechs or only those with nicely deep pockets?

Also, can we call them by their proper names pls? Its Warhawk, Mad Cat, Ryoken, Puma, Daishi, Thor, Black Hawk and Uller. Or do you think your users are all together 12 years old and can only remember basic english words? (Yes, i know that Warhawk, Mad Cat and Black Hawk arent the best expamples, but you know exactly what i mean)

You're talking about the IS names for them...when saying that the IS sucks in general. Wut? Gimme the clan names any day.

You've got all of them correct as a IS standview, except Warhawk is Masakari.
Clan names are Warhawk, Timber Wolf, Stormcrow, Adder, Dire Wolf, Summoner, Nova, and Kit Fox.

Edit: And you are a Steiner pilot? Talk about logic.

When clan mechs first come out - do you think they'll be "unidentified" in our targeting computers? That would be pretty neat :(
