Hello, I could use some help. I can not find where to go to get one of the mech's you dont buy. I wish to see if i like the game first before i spend much money on it.
If you are referring to trial mechs, when you start the game you can select trial battlemechs and use them without spending any money. The downside to trial mechs is that their build is fixed, and cannot be customized. Some trial mechs can be alright, but it would be wise to purchase a battlemech with c-bills when you can.
Once you earn enough c-bills (ingame currency) through playing matches, you can purchase a battlemech through the "store" option on the main menu, then select "battlemechs". from there, you can select "light", "medium", "heavy", and "assault" for weight category. the "champion" and "hero" categories feature mechs that cannot be purchased with money you earn ingame. In the shop, you will have regular mechs (which have their stock builds), champion mechs, and hero mechs.
Stock mechs are just regular battlemechs with no letters after their name (e.g. RVN-3L)
Champion mechs are designated with a (c) after the variant name, and are battlemechs with modified loadouts created by the community to help newer players get used to the game (e.g. RVN-3L (C)). They are often trial mechs, but you can only get them through spending real money. They offer an XP boost, which is not very useful once you use the mech for long enough.
Hero mechs are separate variants compared to the other battlemech chassis (e.g. RVN-H), and often have entirely different equipped hardpoints or hardpoint locations. They also can only be purchased with real money, much like champion mechs, but have a c-bill boost (which reduces the grind for c-bills for battlemechs or equipment).
Since you are a new player, it would be wise to not buy any battlemechs with c-bills until you have completed your first 25 matches. After you have completed 25 matches, you will have been awarded about 10 million c-bills through the achievement system in what is known as the "cadet bonus".
TL; DR: From the main screen, select "store", then "battlemechs", and finally choose the weight class you are looking for. Ignore hero and champion mechs for now, and don't spend any c-bills until you have played 25 matches for a full cadet bonus of ~ 10 million c-bills.
