The Com Guard were hovering at around 95% Level 2 Tech while the Inner Sphere forces the Clans had fought were at more like 10% Level 2. So right out of the box the Clans were getting hit with advanced tech at a level they weren't expecting. Ton for ton Clans still dominated, but not nearly as much as they did regular House units.
This didn't put them on even ground. Clans still had a huge Mech to Mech advantage. What gave Com Guard the edge was the fact that the Com Guard outnumbered them somewhere between three and five to one. When you mix that with the Clans' staggered landings and ambush tactics that Focht used you end up with, at the beginning, against Nova Cat, ComStar outnumbering their opponents 6:1.
As Tukayyid went on and ComStar suffered massive losses their numbers advantaged dwindled, but they were still usually able to throw at least 2 to 1 odds at the Clans by redeploying armies from zones where it had already achieved victory, something the Clans would never do. Each clan fought individually against the forces arrayed against it while some of the Com Guard units redeployed and fought against two or even three different clans over the battle.
The Com Guard 2nd Army, in fact, participated in combat against all of the clans except Ghost Bear.
There are some interesting forum threads on it:

I think at one point, Mag talked her down from the edge of insanity or depression.
Apparently, at some point in the relatively near future, she answers Com Star's call to return to service.
