It reminds me of Space Engine.

Yea that little teaser zoom-out video is amazing. Rough, but amazing. I cannot wait for Horizons to drop. So many new, but familiar game play elements. I'm especially excited for fortress assault missions. Winging up having eyes in the sky while zipping around skimmers with another rover or two sounds pretty ridiculous.

Also JJing back up into your hovering ship, how cool will that be?

^This, so this.

Friday I picked up Rock Band 4; roommate, girlfriend, and I played it whilst drinking for roughly 10 hours before I decided to make some quick Cred before slipping into a small coma. The missions were successful.. though I'm pretty sure when attempting to dock once I did a complete, and unintentional, barrel roll while trying to line up my ship. I remember my shields on the top of my ship scraping the pad.. :S And I thought MWO was difficult paired with Grog..

Well I just bought a Clipper due to them being 20% off after a community goal that paid me 15 million--oh... and got it for 35% off due to some pp system. Anyways, it was... free! And the upgrades were on sale, too, so that saved me another 15 million. It feels like I'm cheating when I go to a combat zone in one of these.

Does anybody use a mouse or a joystick? I did not touch the mouse since I started playing it (I use keyboard-only controls). Joysticks can be less convenient and accurate than a keyboard too.
I wonder what are excellent joysticks for War Thunder and Elite: Dangerous.

It depends how much money you want to spend. Mouse is blasphemous. There's a reason aircraft and spacecraft aren't controlled by them. Joysticks are fantastic once you get used to them--and more accurate than keyboard due to their analogesque nature.

That's one hell of a lucky break my friend. Congrats. I know what you mean about those Clippers though, whenever I come across a WANTED one in a HIRES, it's usually a close fight. They're vicious.

Update on what I've been up to:

Found out the hard way the although XBOne and PC players now share the same universe, there wasn't cross-play functionality to go along with it. Did not realize that had been announced already.. egg on my face. They do however say it's on the board for sometime in the far future!.. yay.

With the 1.4 patch and the discovery of UA spawn rates through the roof. I ventured to snag one myself.. killed the first by accident, got photos of the second (see below). After my fun with that, I found myself completely out of fuel, just one jump back into inhabited space. It was a close one. The system was Socho, one that turned out to be my most profitable yet.

I new it was a gold mine immediately, but the extent had yet to reveal itself. Socho has an outpost less than four lightseconds from a gas giant with pristine rings, which themselves contain a HIRES and the newly implemented Hazardous Resource Extraction Sites. A miner and bounty hunters dream. She also contains two other pristine gas giants. All of which less than 1500 Ls from the jump point. Socho has a total of three stations: two outpost and a Coriolis. The outpost right by the HIRES was where I made my millions though. Unknown to me at the time, 1.4 super-buffed smuggling missions, I just thought Socho was special. Anyway, for 100 lightyear missions, I was turning 3-6 million Credits per trip. That's 10+/hr easy.

Thus, here is what my ASP has turned into:

http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70g,01QmpX4wt4wt9qS9qS,327_7_7_6Q6Q7_8I,7UI08c05U05U4zM2jw2UI

A nearly 60 million Credit beast. Now I'm 10 million into the 126 million I need for my Python. Unfortunately, yesterday they nerfed the smuggling missions, which is how I found out Socho wasn't special in that regard. It is still however special due to the HIRES and mining, as well as other transport missions. I can still manage 1.5-3 million average for ~100 Ly distances, better than risking death if I'm not in the mood. So.. check out Socho, I don't think it will let you down. It's outside of PP space on the very edge of inhabited, and it's really close to the UA hunting grounds. Fly Safe!

So that's where I'm at. Come on Horizons!

Wow very nice. I'll have to check that out once I hit the top 15% in these new combat community goals near Namarii. Should be a nice 8 - 16 million credit payday in each and for a poor sap like myself, that's a lot of money!

Have you ever seen this shipbuilder? It is really nice:

http://coriolis.io/outfit/

I find it easier to look at than the other. It kind of reminds me of smurfy's.

Is there a place that tracks your progress in the event?

Thanks for the link to that other editor! I suppose I should have assumed there were other third party ship builders, never crossed my mind though. It is a bit easier on the eyes.

Well, you have to sign up for the events at the stations.

This thread lists the current active goals:

https://forums.front...ad.php?t=187372

As to where they come from? I think there are Galnet news items that discuss them but I must admit, engrossed in my own fiction I am writing at the moment, I don't pay much attention to the feed.

So I picked this baby up at Rowdy Tom's Super-Tootin' Fast Shootin' Emporium over on the slick side of Imperial space. She's a beauty. He even offered to throw in a free wax n' wash if I paid him in cash. You don't want to know how big that suitcase was. It barely fit in my Cobra rental I used to get over there. Oh, don't tell anyone I didn't return it full of gas, okay?

Anyways, I stroll out of the station through the slot and let her rip. Man those engines scream! I headed on over to Namarii to kill some resistance scum and am mowing through a pack of wild bandits when I look over to one side of my cockpit and what do I notice? HAND PRINTS! Someone let their grubby kid on my bridge and smeared kid-sized blotches all over the fine, bleached, slave-hide interior. By the way, I hear if you keep the slaves on a strict diet of Phleebutian Grub Worms for a solid six months before you skin them--their complexion will be immaculate and it makes FANTASTIC upholstery. Now, now. I can hear it now...

"Blastman, that is horrible! You killed people to line your bridge!"

No, I did not kill them. Tom promised me each slave was dipped in a vat of Zeese Grub Glue after they were clipped to hold their organs in! "Year or two tops--they'll be good as new. Ready for a new trim!" He said.

I digress. Back to the ship. Those prints! Who put them there! That's a rhetorical question, by the way. Look at them! They are ruining the atmosphere! I mean, stuff is blowing up all around me but those prints! They are distracting!

Now mind you, I've got kids of my own--and totally understand! I shipped one of mine off to the Gliese salt mines for thirty moons the last time he got his lolly-pop encrusted, chocolate slathered paws on my favorite recliner. BUT THIS IS A CLIPPER! Do you know how many people I had to kill to buy this Clipper?!

On second thought, don't answer that. So I humbly beseech whoever is in charge a simple, reasonable request...

French Maids. Yes. Please. For the love of all that is elegant, French Maids. Where can I get them? It is a big ship--and my wife really has better things to do than clean it while I... uhh... collect taxes. I'm sure a couple on the bridge would be fine additions. They could scrub that scum off in a jiffy. Whadda ya say?

And just in case you don't believe me, here are some pics. I even used my Pro Glow Hyper-Cam to capture the footage in case you insist I doctored the footage. I'm not a doctor. Why would I want to practice on pictures. Bah. Just look. And send me some French Maids--pretty please. They'll--err, I'll make it worth your while.

Posted Image

Look at them! Aren't they awful?! Grimy, dirty hand prints! Why I oughtta...

And here's the raw footage. No traders were harmed in its collection. I promise! You can see them around 3:50 or so. Oh, and whoever guesses where the lines starting @ 2:25 or so came from, bonus poster points for you! (without using a search engine!)

Thanks for your prompt attention on this matter. I promise they won't be skinned. I just want my bridge clean!

Oh cool. I knew about community goals and whatnot, just never participated. I wasn't aware that they entailed signing up and being ranked/receiving prizes though. That's pretty sweet. I keep up on the GalNet articles pertaining to UA's. Mainly because The Canonn re-posts them of course. Way to much in the news feed to keep up with it.

Keeping your own narrative though, that sounds fun. Seems to be working out well for you based upon your second post. I like the 'it's space, screw it' vibe it gives off. I've often giggled to myself about the thought of a cargo hold containing over a dozen tons of slaves, tobacco, liquor, and narcotics whilst transporting them to their shady proprietors for whatever use they have for them; upholstering/cleaning their bridges I suppose.

A6 thrusters in that beast huh? I can see their excellent performance in your video. What I cannot see, is what you were trying to point out. You didn't make the same mistake as me and slip below deck during a long cruise and tie a couple on with the merchandise did you? I saw all kinds of things that weren't there upon returning to the deck. Also.. what lines at 2:25?

Are the Shield Cells/Boosters there as a supplement until you save up for a top tier shield? Are you going to keep them on with the best shield :|. I need to buy a clipper..

How long is a moon cycle on Gliese? Just wondering how well you disciplined those kids. Are we talking Earth moon length? Shorter? Longer? 30 seems appropriate regardless though. No kids of my own to compare.

I can't do French Maids specifically, but I could get you some more slaves that you could slap some outfits on and order around. Unless your like me; against having slaves, only for transporting them.

Serious question though. How do you make it so that when you look around, your ship maintains its angular momentum? When I look around my cockpit, my ship starts flying in a straight line, and I cannot input any flight controls. Perhaps because I have it set to toggle? I use a mouse and keypad.

Fly safe :P

Edit: I now believe you were referencing the traders at 3:50.

I'm having such a hard time with this game. I'm trying hard to get sucked in, but...

I found some occupied escape capsules floating around. Scooped them up, and I know they are contraband (why??), but never seem to be able to find a black market to sell them. Coming in and out of stations is a bit hair raising with no shields at max speed.

I do fine in combat at RES, but if I go to a low intensity combat zone I get my ass handed to me when I pick a side. I get a guy isolated, start whittling him down, then all of a sudden I get zerg rushed by a bunch of enemy ships, so I flee for my life.

Doing missions is annoying as hell, since if it's bringing something to the station, I have to leave the game and go to a third party site to find a place that sells it. At the very least it should tell you the system you should go to. And the rewards are usually really bad, the influence pointless and for delivery missions I find myself in all new systems with all new factions, so I have to go *back* if I want to work on my faction with a particular group.

Power Play... I have to go to the headquarters planet to pick up supplies to take them to other control points? Is that it? I've never figured out what the other 3 things I can do to influence stuff... intel... I can't even remember.

Despite all that, the game is downright beautiful and I'll keep chugging away. I just feel like I'm doing the exact opposite of min maxing; doing everything the wrong, slow way and not really understanding the underlying mechanics.

Joystick, X52pro.

Elite Dangerous is one of the few game that uses all the functions the X52pro has to offer.
Especially the 4way hat on the Throttle is very useful for the lateral and vertical thrusters.
The two wheels on the throttle can be used during landing mode (landing gear down) to roll and yaw on the spot without moving the stick.

But a good stick isn't only useful for Elite, other games like Freespace 2, Wing Commander Saga and Diaspora can also be played with a stick.

I feel your frustration. I felt the same way for awhile after playing for a few weeks. I kept going though and eventually found my groove. My main goal always seems to be my next module/ship. I get a ship, I max everything out, and move on to the next one. With that always in mind, it helps me find my own fun in the game, much like Blastman's self-made fiction. Now with Socho, my main focus is transporting both legal and not so much goods, with frequent breaks to the HIRES to destroy everything, to change things up.

I also like to go and help out with UA research every now and then. The involvement and community built are that aspect of the game is astonishing. Much like the hardcore community surrounding MWO, The Canonn is a group devoted to ED in a way I had never before seen; doing things with a video game that I had never before seen. Most of the fun is the mystery and speculation about the object, being that UA's are basically another scoop-able canister that can be sold.

Wings are especially fun and help out with dogfights immensely. I've found myself teared up from laughing on more than one occasion.

I assume the escape pods are contraband because they're waiting for an official rescue ship or some such nonsense and you just nabbed them to be sold into slavery on the black market.

The HIRES is your best bet for solo combat.

Missions weren't my cup of tea for the longest time. Until I stumbled across some good outposts that consistently offer decent amounts of Credits, for little hassle. A lot of the game is third-party. I feel it adds to the simulation aspect of it. If it were me flying around the stars, I think similar research for similar goals would be appropriate. Other pilots contributing to the greater good by generating tools to aid in other pilots progress. Though it may be a hassle, it would take a lot of resources to have put everything that the community has created into the game. And it is possible to decipher most of information provided by those tools in-game; by purchasing trade route data, watching the trends in the market, and studying the economies of the systems, much like you would have to in reality. Always have to keep in mind that the focus is/was on it being a simulation. It may take a bit more time/effort, but it's not like the devs left the data out of the game, players just circumvented it.

But hey, it's not like I'm doing any of that. I totally use third-party tools, that's just how I justify the slight hassle. There are overlay trade tools and whatnot. You can calculate trade route data in-game in real time. Haven't tried those out yet though.
As for PP, joined the lowest ranked, science faction one, haven't touched it since. Keep collecting my 1000 Cred a week though!

What's really exciting about ED, much like MWO, is the future. Both are great platforms to expand upon. Horizons will be epic, and bring a whole lot more story into ED as well. Big things surround the UA's, and their mystery is just about to unfold.

This is my setup:

I have a stick/throttle/pedals/Track IR. Using all four lets me fly like that.

I use the largest, best rated thrusters on every ship I own. I'm a bad person in Elite, doing bad things. Nobody likes tax collectors. :) So I better be able to scoot versus humans.

Gliese moons are longer than Earth moons. That little bugger learned to never do it again! Calluses be damned! Real French maids only, please. ;)

Oh, and the lines at 2:25 are the beginning of the next song. Listen to what it says.

Returned to MWO after few months of self-proclaimed exile. Played few days instead of Elite. Give me a break...
Low res, low details, low FPS instead of full res, high details, high FPS in E:D?

I am getting 500.000 Cr smuggling missions on regular basis. Python, here I come.
In the name of Empire ! (untill I collect rewards :P ).

We demand French maids as co-pilots! Would pay serious cash...

Edit:

me wants. now. Notice turrets and ship attacking the base!
