Why an XL160?

It's the exact same weight as an XL170, but slower..

This should run better: LCT-1M
Because I have it in stock, and because I'm an **** retentive tabletop geek at heart.

The Spider 5V

A locust with stupid amounts of jumpjets but at max a 12-point alpha

Can also sing 'Spiderman cartoon theme' while flying during match.

Minus the web-spinning, of course.

Rest of the lyrics...kinda fit.

This may be a stoopid question, but consider the source:

Do you think rolling Locust makes you a better pilot/player?

Margins for survival are...slim

It does make you a better pilot. Since the punishment for making mistakes is much harsher, your senses and skills are trained better. Which results in making any light mech you pilot after a locust, a breeze in comparison. I would still not recommend Locusts to new players who still don't know which way is up.

As long as you understand that they are hard to pilot, and respect that frontal assaults aren't going to be something you do regularly, you should be fine with them.

I posted this in a seperate thread close to a year ago, but I figure that I ought to share it here...

  • The challenge.  There is definitely a thrill to running a mech that is handicapped
  • The nostalgia.  The Locust was one of the classics, back from the old BT days.  IIRC, it was one of the first mechs you got in Crescent Hawks Revenge.
  • Stupid builds.  When you are piloting a mech that you know is a throw away, you feel free to get a little more creative with your builds.
  • It's kind of liberating.  When you drop in a Locust, you expect to suck.  So when you have a mediocre game, it feels really good.

Emphasis mine.

The locust has quickly become my "Zen mech" and one of my all-around favorites to run for exactly these reasons. Simply surviving a match feels pretty good, actually doing well feels amazing, and draw's massive bragging rights.

My favored Locust builds are named "Sting I", "Sting II", and "Ankle-biter"

My LCT-1M(P) and 3M are essentially identical. I named them both "Sting" because they have a sharp point and glow blue in the presence of Kuritians and Clanners. ;)  I circle at the edge of an engagement picking off the wounded and sniping enemies in the back with my ER when they aren't looking. I just trade the 1V's machine guns for a set of small lasers on the 3M.

My 3S plays a bit different, and frankly it's shocking how much you can rack up in the way of damage and kills simply by hanging back 200-300m and combining the fire of two LRM-5s with a medium laser. Most mechs only carry 8 - 16 points of rear armor and you can chew through that in a few seconds if your target is distracted by one of your larger teammates. Even without DHS you can fire almost continuously without overheating so get out there and score some points. :D

so wait.. do u think we will have a locust hero mech soon ?

i love my 3M to bits and would buy a hero in a heartbeat

paint it pink and squirrel like ive never squirreled before
i always thought some sort of unique bonus to air/artillery strikes would be cool for locust

Well mechs without heros currently are the locust, griffin, shadowhawk, wolverine, thunderbolt.

So all phoenix mechs and since the phoenix battlemech the battlemaster just got a hero I would say 100% yes a locust hero is coming. But next for the existing mechs or 5th after the phoenix meds and tbolt who knows.

It will cost 1500MC so half of a 15USD 3000MC purchase

I'm torn between getting it for 750MC when it ultimately goes on sale, and not wanting to wait, and just buying it at release. ;) (when it's eventually released)

We can hope, but Vindicator hero is listed for this upcoming Tuesday, so probably a few weeks out, at the earliest.

I got my free mech bay using nothing but the 1E yesterday and I had a ton a good rounds with in. I am now saying seismic and radar derp are an absolute must. I am already using the medium laser module and I am tempted to go full ****** and put the SL module on it.

w/ premium time
231,504 bills
2289 XP
2 kills
9 assists
2 comp destruction
670 damage
3 spotting assists.

i still think too many discount the locust and dead in the water...the amount of running around like a tard you can do in the middle of a group is astounding sometimes where you come out alive and keep going yet you tossed 10-20 damage on like 4 mechs in the process.

A strong tendency in any competitive or pseudo competitive environment (such as any multiplayer game, or a fair number of single player ones) is the habit people have of assuming that anything that is not absolute top tier competitive is worthless.

Take that and add it to something as squishy as the Locust... ;)

So whats the recommended style for Locusts?
Scouting?

Vulturing?

Staying with the Heavies?

Im saving for a Victor(ugh, ugly slow...)but i need an assault in my stables.
Next is Locust or Stormcrow. Likely the bug because of how cheap it is.

I'd say generally, hit and run.

Come in, unload, run past, then come back for another pass, sort of in giant figure eight patterns.

Never stop moving.
Speed is life.

Vulturing is also a very important one. If you read the OP, it'd give you tips on what to do with at least a couple of them. The rest was summed up nicely by Ovion.

Always remember that you are out-tonned, and most likely out-gunned, so make sure they never get more than a split second to see you. Dive in, smack them, and dive out.

The most important rule though, is NEVER be the first thing they see. You will probably not survive it. Most locusts really shine when hunting isolated opponents, or waiting the first few minutes of the match, until the brawl starts, and then sowing havoc and chaos in the enemy line.

I generally stick close (but not too close) to the heavies, and do spoiler/vulture attacks. If that enemy is brawling with your Atlas he's not paying attention to you. Run up and blow his kneecap off, or place some red smoke on his heels just outside his FoV.

I started out in spiders/Jenners, absolutely loving lights. Then came the 20 ton's off ass hauling terrifying fun that is the locust. That said, I've been distracted by our light's bigger cousins lately I will admit. Darn good guide, which has inspired me to take the Locust back out to reclaim my 'running around like a madman/pissing off the assault pilot skills' :) I absolutely love the MG and medium laser build.

Glad you enjoyed it.

On a separate note, I disagree with you sig. There are NO problems that cannot be solved with the proper application of violence.

One does not simply maintain KDR > 1.0 in a locust
