Yeah! Stop relying on weapons to do damage with! Or speed/jjs to make you manuverable!
people use the ac20 as a noob cannon was the point. People run around in lower elo derping all over themselves and find they can get lucky kills or some random damage with the gun and then think its good. The point was that relying on an ac20 will only get you so far and WILL get you killed at higher elo. Specially with the build described.

Their only truly viable role right now is as a light hunter, however that only accounts for some of the variants, and often there are very limited numbers of lights to hunt in pugs.
Their general design is wrong-headed however in that they are in general too tall, too slow and undergunned. At least one of those 3 things need to go away (I would pick the height).
In the interests of shameless bragging I will leave this once in a blue moon result here

I'm not understanding the hate on the BJ1 though...it's a hard hitter that travels at 93, without being the size of a highlander. Or the 1X which can be just as effective.

To be faster than assaults, heavies while carrying heavier weaponry and more armor than light mechs.

Perhaps it is time to make heavy and assault mechs slower per engine size? (I mean seriously, an assault running at nearly 80kph?) That 80kph cost the assault mech a lot of tonnage that it could of used for other things.
I would put:
lights at ~150kph max.
Mediums at ~100 kph max.
Heavies at ~60kph max.
Assaults @ ~40 kph max.
All of those weight classes are already capable of doing that except a few varients and mechs.
Understandably, increase the armor values per ton of each mech type appropriately to compensate.
The max armor a mech can have is affected by tonnage.

Relying on an AC20 to make a Medium mech serviceable makes you bad. The end.
Generally, it made big ol' holes in my opponents, and heck, there were games where I'd end up at 25%, out of ammo, and...the winner. If you're not likely to live long, why not make every hit count? Strap a 20 on a Shadow Hawk and you've got an oversized Hunchback that can go airborne. Who's whining about that being for bads?
That's the whole point of mediums. They can do -one- job well. An AC/20 makes what job it is pretty straightforward. So does a Gauss, for that matter. One's a close-in can opener, the other's a dedicated sniper.

So is Cicada-3M.
I have about a 2:1 k/d in both.

light mechs go 150-170
heavy mechs go 65-85
mediums should go 110-130, which is in between lights and heavies. but in reality most mediums can only go 90-110.
They need about a 20kph speed buff.

Engine Cap Increase wouldn't hurt either

Sadly though, going to stick with the ballistic heavy mechs.

The average top speed in TT for an assault was 50-60/kph
with several doing 60-70
and a few even getting 80-90
so capping an assault mech to 40/kph is just uhm yea, no.

You mess with my Victor and your messing with your life..
I run a shadow-hawk with 2 AC/5 and a ER PPC to good effect in pug matches. I also have 2 cents that do well. Just don't be on the front line and wait till your big guys have started pounding and then flank them. Also always try to work with the other mediums on your team.

Mediums can wreck face, and still retain the mobility to escape a sticky situation. Most of the Heavies that move into the 90 KPH range without speed tweak sacrifice firepower or survivability. ....Also have you ever tried to pilot an Assault moving less than 50 KPH???? I tried a Stalker 5S the other day because I thought Dual AMS might be a nice alternative to ECM for missile shielding.... 52 KPH is darned near unbearable.... especially when your that big. Unless you are in a group or can headshot people left and right my opinion is an assault at <65 KPH is dead weight. Anything really below 100 KPH in this game dies if you find yourself in a bad situation... one reason why I've gone from using heavies to Cicadas and Lights... if you find yourself flanked or outgunned you have a chance to get away and come back for some stragglers.... Lights are also because of the speed able to pull off a 3-4 kill late game on injured mechs to even up and maybe even turn the tables on some ROFL stomps... Mediums (Mainly the Cicada) can do the same, but require more fortuitous circumstances... if the rest of your team gets rolled and your in a heavy or Assault, you have essentially wasted the 3-5 minutes of your life that kind of match takes.

Cicada, Hunchy, Cent, and Treb all have GREAT loadouts available.
The Cicada has one of the few ECM variants, and can be an up-armored jenner, or Spider or PPC/ERLL sniper. Medium armor and weaponry at Jenner non speed tweaked speeds? YES PLEASE
Hunchy and Centurion are kind of one trick ponies with the Hunch/torso and the Arm respectively but... 9 energy Hardpoints...? AC20? Cent-D with the option of SRM6 or SSRM2 while going as fast as a 'slow' Cicada? That's all kinds of yes.
and Finally the Trenchbucket.... 2x A-LRM15 plus a Tag and a random number of lasers and a couple configurations with JJ's?? .... Easily capable of taking apart an already engaged assault from the flank and the fading to the rear? With LRMS its the most dependant upon even matchmaking, but still, very capable of wrecking face!
Mediums are faring pretty well right now
