In the german community it gets pretty bad sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, Roleplaying is great and a big part of MW(O) but it should not get out of hand.

Funny how that tends to work out isn't it (or is it more we just notice those more?)

It has started to occur to me just how much most of the trash-talk is making the talkers sound like the 13 year olds online gaming is infamous for (not all trash-talk mind you - I saw some actually good ones last night - and I oppose trash talk in general)

Alpine last night (Skirmish) our team won HARD - but one hostile Spider ran and hid - we spent the full time hunting him down - and one of my PuGmates started trashtalking him.

Absolutely no creativity with the insults - generic 13 year old style dribble.

Got a chance to explore some of the corners of the map though - and it is actually a fairly pretty place. :(

(kudos to the spider BTW - he didn't just shut down in a corner, he ducked and weaved and kept just out of sight...except for the brief glimpses we had - he even scored well in the end)

I think a little trash talk is good. It's funny, motivating, and satisfying when you can back it up.

However, it should never be mean, hurtful, or denigrating. Too many people cross the line imo. Refined trash talking is eloquent, concise, and funny. Strive for that. Don't try to just be the biggest douchnozzle on the internet.

To back this up:

If you have not read it: go read Cyrano de Bergerac.
If you prefer to watch over read: watch Jose Ferrer's version. (it is EPIC)

Even if you cannot stand black and white movies: the smack-talk happens very early on - someone tries to insult the (in?)famous nose... and Cyrano explains how he failed - gives about 20 examples of how he could have done it better, while dueling the guy with swords as well as words.

This is true.

Unfortunately - and as I said earlier - the vast majority of trash talking I see isn't meant with humor or said with any eloquence. Nobody reads it and laughs (except perhaps the odd teenager who'd giggle if you said "but") and claims to humor are a poor cover for being a douchenozzle.

Sadly, too many kids these days never learn or appreciate the difference.

So true ^.

I try to keep some fun and humour if I kill another player. Example when I have killed Shar Wolf I would type as an example "looks like the wolf got shar-fted" Or when I have killed Brough , "when the brough break's..." and it's just meant to be fun and taken in jest with a slight hint of trash typing.

If I take the time to type your name with a clever quip, it simply means I respect your playing ability and it is a respectful kill. So if you see me type a cool one liner consider yourself lucky because I don't do it for anyone.

It's just so much more tasteful then,

f o @ d = f++k of and die

uff = useless fat f++K

anything tasteless to do with mothers, fathers, and kids especially, is downright vulgar.

the n-word

the implication of sexual abuse and implied ****.

So mech-fighters, if you have nothing nice to type, then don't type it all.

I have no problem with lighthearted ribbing; I do take great exception to the ridicule of weaker players.

Some people need to be reminded they do not know who they have targeted to make fun of. You are not the superior gamer having told the 14 year-old who has been playing for ten minutes they are “clueless”, because “you” happen to think their build stinks as you have not read it on some forum somewhere. Nor are you competent, having called the disabled person who plays through enough medication you would not be able to function, “a useless pug”.

Sadly, that kind of childish behaviour is starting to creep into some of the better-known streams over at twitch. Streamers berating other gamers in public media for cheap laughs, having pug stomped a group of random players they feel the need to call them derisory names in the process. Despite their belief to the contrary, it does nothing to promote them, nor the game. While it may make a few adolescents lol in chat, it can only ever do harm to what is already a small community.

FTFY :)

I'm going to have to remember that one though. ;)
It's not quite de Bergerac, but it is well above average.

you guys talk about trash talking as a childish behavior. Why is it childish behavior on a game, but in real life its not...trash talking in sports are 10x worse than it is on the game. I played football and basketball my whole life all the way up to junior college (where I am now) I know for a fact trash talking on the basketball court or football court is a lot worst. First of all they saying it right to your face an the on top of that, that stuff can get you all off your game. The crap we trash talk about on here ain't nothing, this is mediocre.

Some you guys are always In your feelings and need to realize its out of fun. none of us is going to come up to you In the streets and randomly start talking shit lol

And no one is safe from my trash talk if you are 8 and you wanna fall for my bait, you can get your healthy serving of trash talk. If you are 80 you can get it too. if you are a noob you can get it to, if u consider yourself a pro you can take the L and trash talk from me too. No one is safe on the internet because I assume on the net everyone is the same age as me. Boy I love trash talking im the champ at this.

We are not talking about trash talking as if it itslef were childish (or did the whole de Bergerac thing go over your head? only way that should have is if you have not yet gotten to the grade where they teach classical literature....)

But rather the fact that so many go about it in such a childish way - and waste such oportunities: IE

I am insulted that you seem to think that insult was actually insulting!

THAT kind of lame insult is the problem I have with trash talking.

"Wah wah wah! you are too immature to appreciate my level of maturity! wah wah wah! cry some more!"

Grow up and learn some real insults buddy.

Trash talk is not sportsman-like behaviour.I guess it really does depend on the context, but generally it is just poor taste. I think it is a weak and immature tactic employed by those who care far too much about their internet pixels or ball-chasing. Probably [and sadly] because this is the basis of many people's ego. Get on with the game. People then call it a mind-game, but it hardly takes much brain power to insult people.
[Or at least, to attempt to, and fail hard because not everyone takes games so seriously  ]

Trash talking is great tactic. If your opponent falls for it, it will mess their game up, they will try to do to much just to prove you wrong. As on the game, randomly say "such and such players suck," they fall for the bait they will trash talk back, you get under their skin they will have a hit on you, once they see you they will immediately, leaving themselves open. I guess it really depends on he situation, but that Is one way it can be effective. Personal I trash talk for the fun.
