I understand what you're saying, but I still don't think it goes with what I'm saying. My proposal is - don't say anything at all. Not, "Don't say those words.". But nothing. I just want to stress, though, all I'm trying to do at is explain my point. Not trying to tell anyone what to say.

Walking off the court without saying a thing to the winning or losing team would be considered rude and unsportsmanlike in real life. Why should it be ok or even desirable on the internet?

Good gamesmanship is not saying a single word unless the loser says something first, because as these past 12 pages have shown your definition of "GG" will be vastly different to everyone else. This is also a computer game and not a sport, stop treating it as such.

everything is up for interpretation and that is why we have to teach each other the right way and not "your way" we standardizes things all over the world so we can understand each other.

btw if this is not a sport then why do they call it eports for computer games?

the other way around, chess is a "board game" sports are just... "basket ball games"...

btw no means no.... not maybe or try harder or later. :(

The problem lies in not calling shitty stuff what it is for fear of offending.

Silence equals saying that a bad team and bad play is OK. You get wiped off the field without contributing? Admit your guilt. You end up outdamaging the combined damage total of the other 11 players combined as they wiped 1-12- and none of them even got an assist? (And yes, I've done it) Let your team know they played horribly and apologize to the other team for failing to give them actual competition.

Praise for the good without scorn for the bad makes one's praise empty of meaning, as it lacks any scale if all you do is applaud the good without pointing out the bad. Good, bad, say something. Silence is a mere acceptance of the status quo, and if the status quo was "your team did more damage to itself than the opponent", then it should be unacceptable and stated publically as such.

I only say "gg close" when it's a 12-0 stomp. Most of the time people can laugh at the situation and remember it's just a game, which is the outcome I'm actually trying for. Other times people call me all sorts of names, which I enjoy equally because the impotent rage of people who take themselves and computer games way too seriously is inherently funny and I'm a terrible person. Otherwise it's one of the following:
gg cloves
gg clothes
gg closed
gg clones

Where does such an assumption come from? If I have a bad game I don't need anyone to vocally tell me how terrible I did. I'm well aware I sucked. And being the kind of "gamer" I am I learn from my mistakes and don't want to have bad games. Now, if I continually did stupid shit, then sure, I deserve to be told I'm doing something wrong.

I'm glad you posted this comment. That doesn't make you a terrible person.

And I continually see stupid shit done on the teams I play on. You may not. There are plenty of people out there that will go "I PLAYED GUD" if you asked them, or if you simply state "Boy, our team was horrible today".

In fact, they'll often say as much after I state the obvious. It's fun when Mr. I Can Count To Potato does it when you were watching him spam LRMs at 30m and dealt single-digits worth of damage. Or sits there "sniping" with ML's at 800m while standing stock still in a Spider trial until someone notices the green flashlights and one-shots them.

No, you were not good. No, you did not contribute. No, you do not even have a fundamental grasp of the controls. Yes, you should spend some time in the Training Grounds instead of hitting "Play" as fast as you could and being a semi-mobile target drone.

Those examples you gave are a bit extreme on the bad side. And I'm not saying extreme as if I don't believe you, but more that it's pretty obvious their level of being a newbie. Those types of players need more constructive comments on how to play rather than - you suck.

But I'd guess you've got some real newbies playing if that's the kind of thing you're running into. I've seen players comment and tell someone that's using LRM's like that, that they aren't doing any damage.

There in lies the dilemma. GG is extremely personal call to make when it comes to the online world, as we should all be aware by now isn't fair or even. Acts of God, uncoordinated teammates, 360noscopeyoloartystrikingpoptarters, other team having twice the tonnage, forecast of heavy lrm showers with a tiny chance of any laser fire within the 500m range, crying baby, siblings, ping, lag, disconnects, afkers, etc can all drastically affect a persons outlook on a match. Only real solution is to stay silent. Also aside from the idea being tossed about occasionally on the forums MWO is not an Esport. Maybe someday that could change but certainly not at the moment.

and soon after that we will have people complaining why people stay silent and how its rude to just disconnect. my hand is extended and iv even walked to your side of the court to shake your hand but you left me hanging......

staying silence up for interpretation as well.

the "gg" in german means *grins which could be translated to smirk or grin. so if somebody is posting a gg at the end of a game, there is a high chance that this person is just showing his joy on the recent game, ususally for winning either overwhelmingly or pretty short (with a pinch of luck). something to consider for all none german guys out there

Could also be likened to someone having a chip on their shoulder if they say "glhf" at the beginning of a match and fail to get 23 replies of "U2". Are there people whinging over such a thing happening currently? No.. and in all honesty if you actually saw someone complain about that would you view it as anything but troll baiting? Be honest.. As so this doesn't end up a pointless Straw man lets simply agree to disagree. People are different, opinions are different, etiquettes are different. Silence is golden.

Since this thread is almost entirely about people who have a chip on their shoulder about some people saying "GG" when the chip-holders feel it wasn't.......

Beware of throwing stones buddy, your house is looking pretty glassy from here.

I don't feel like going under the bridge to drag you out Shar but I'll nibble then leave it at that for this thread. King presented an outcome from a lack of "gg' being verbalised in game which if his example was to hold any weight, we would be seeing threads on people annoyed that not everybody is listening to or acknowledging what they say which I tossed back at him. True I was a bit of an ass with my last lil sentence from it being late where I am so i'll apologise for him for that. Doesn't diminish the meaning of everything else I mentioned. MWO is not classified as an Esport, dragging things like sportsmanship into this does nothing but derail the topic, the opinions of what defines a 'gg' vary greatly. Since many probably wont read or skip to the end i'll leave you hanging with this. If you truly meant Good Game with sincerity, why would you show a lack of common courtesy as well as a sign of laziness and disrespect to your target audience by using the text type "GG"?
