Actually, I "GG" 95% of the time, win or lose.

About the only time I don't is if I forget, or if people were obviously sync dropping, etc.

To me, maybe because of my background playing sports in leagues from childhood up, it is just good sportsmanship. You play a soccer, football or baseball match, you shake hands with the other team after. It's called winning (or losing) with grace.

If I lose, I GG because I am acknowledging the other team played well (do I throw in an occasional "NGG" or "GG other team" if my team was particularly atrocious? Yes). I also GG if I win to basically say "hey dudes, next time. Good effort though".

One of the things I really dislike about this internet generation, which makes me guess that many gamers never played in team or league activities (not Gaming Leagues, but Sports) is the automatic assumption a person is being a douche if the "GG" after a win. To my psyche, it would be a bigger act of douchery to NOT offer the post game handshake as it were. When I am the loser, and someone "GG"s me, I have to option of a simple GG back, or to say "Not really, but y'all played well" or the like. But the [redacted] I hear often make me think there are some people who have very little experience with IRL etiquette, as behavior people think is fine in game apparently, would get their face punched IRL.

If a person first assumption is that the other person has to be a [redacted] if they "GG" as a winner, more often then not it is a reflection of our own personality we are projecting on others, and really, should call one's OWN sportmanship and conduct in question. There are certainly plenty of people, online especially, who are [redacted]. Too often though, it's the one pointing the finger.

The only time i agree with a "GG", or i say it myself, is in a 12-11 match, lasted 10+ minutes, where the two teams have been really close each other, and where everyone has had fun playing. If somenoe on the winning team in a 12-1 match says "gg", i automatically assume he is a [redacted].

sounds like you got issues then dude. Maybe gamers have a poor grasp on IRL etiquette, but it's still (usually) meant as respect.

Offense is taken not given.

Something as innocuous as "gg" can simply be taken as a mutual consideration to have had a fun game. And I for one will take it that way unless otherwise explained.

It is only when an alternative use is applied like "gg close" which is more "intentionally" judgmental where offense is intended it seems.

tbh, I don't mind either way, it is all just posturing and smack talk, and I more feel sorry for individuals who need to get a rise out of others in a computer game to feel adequate or validated in some way. You can bet your bottom dollar that they are not having fun or are happy with who they are as an individual if they feel they have to do this.

In short you know for yourself if you or your team applied themselves and whether there is anything to learn from that encounter. Lose and learn you win also, and being beaten by an opponent who used good tactics and skill is not really something to be ashamed of.

If I had a good game, was beaten by a strong opponent and they subsequently had the courtesy to say "gg" I at least would respect the fact that they recognise value in their opponents. However, saying it out of duty or repetition or a point of manners might of course dilute the genuine interpretation of that use for yourself but others may still use it with better intent. But this the of course depends how much you respect the phrase itself with how you use it.

Also if you let it get under your skin and take offense then this posturing or smack talk is then simply doing its job as intended, as you are more concerned by this psychological warfare than the confidence with yourself or your team. Simply be the better man, let it go and feel pity for those that have to use such in order to compete. It is the over emphasis of the need for justice or recognition of truth that can lead to problems by feeling a need to justify yourself against such you give it power or recognise it has influence over you.

If you need a retort to "gg close" however you could use "qq open"; this being an invite for the poster to get whatever hurt they are carrying out of their system that made them feel the need to say "gg close" in the first place. So the proposed "qq open" expression is akin to the phrase "does someone need a hug?"

This is what the rationale behind "gg" should be, but in this game it is more an attempt to taunt the loser than sportmanship. This is obvious when you start dropping in many matches in a row at which point you sort of sync with the same bunch of players. Well, those same players who will always type "gg" when they win, stay silent when their team loses, no "gg"s there.
I am not saying that everybody does it of course, there are some people that will type gg no matter if they win or lose, they are not the majority though.
Whatever, it is a way to reveal someone's character I suppose, even in this faceless internet.

I think we should look at the worst of the stompers out there. Its standard for them to GL&HF at the start then wipe out the other team and do GG or GG close at the end. They have pretty much turned it into an insult for everyone.
Its also standard for one of my friends to say it every drop as well. And he is just that kind of well mannered person, that he means it.

Not recognizing it and /or making excuses does not change anything in how its used.
Sometimes it twists my shorts when I know we did not have a GG, but then a take a breath, and shrug it off. I don't personally go for the pleasantries before or after the match, but it does not mean I didn't think it. Its more I'm to lazy type out a welcome. Weird I know!

If and when it was hard fought I may GG my teamates win or lose but not global. Rather though I say nice try or good effort.
Nice of you to do so too

We know its sometimes being used as an insult by many so why would you want to be lumped in with them?
That feels more like how I see it.

"gg" is polite. "GG" is sincere. It is absurd to interpret "gg" or "GG" as condescending.

I used to give a "GG" (to All Chat) but condescending or not now if my team done well and we win I will say it with a "gj" (good job) in Team Chat only.

I never considered this before reading this thread. Some good point here, all around. Up to now, I've always used "gg" to signify that I enjoyed a match. However, I also like to specifically point out amazing things in a match when I see them.

For example:

When an enemy player cores me with a particularly skilled shot from far away? I'll go out of my way to tell them that I thought that shot was wicked.

When I get into a 1v1 with an enemy player in some corner of the map and we spend minutes brawling to the end? I'll go out of my way to tell that player how much I enjoyed that, regardless of who came out on top.

I would say proper GG use has to depend on the context. 12-9 is a GG. 9-10 with a base cap is a GG. 12-11 is a VGG. However, a 12-2 stomp doesn't warrant the use of a GG in anything other than team chat IMO. Maybe a well done by the losing side.

Apparently none of you played baseball when you were little... You say GG and high five everyone on the opposing team regardless of the score. It's just a way of saying thanks for playing. Anyone that takes offense needs to get over themselves and quit being so damn sensitive...

Only problem with that sentiment is that this is the interwebs. Someone, somewhere is going to take offense at anything a person says, because you can't read body language on the internet. So while it may be proper manners to you... it can be construed as a nice faceplant into dog poo for someone else.

For the record, I agree with you in that this is the way it should be, but an online videogame is a far cry from being 10 years old after just winning a little league game.

I PUG mainly, I'll type GG if I think it was a good game, win or lose.

I'll type GF (good fight) if I've had a particularly good one on one scrap with another mech, win or lose.

If you're offended by that then sorry,, your problem not mine

Referring to my own little handbook:

Lose game 0-2 to 12: hacking accusation
Lose game 3-7 to 12: logoff asap silently, blame the fail on your little brother playing the next day
Lose game 8-11 to 12: gg -- because chances are, it was
Win game 12 to 8-11: gg -- because chances are, it was
Win game 12 to 3-7: gg owned easy -- for extra maximum salt rubbing, satisfying win knowing they actually tried
Win game 12 to 0-2: ggclose™ -- you already know

How about the players who type out GL&HF at the start of a match and type out GG at the end no matter what the result is, even if they were on the losing side of a 12:0 stomp?

Ir's simple really. If you have a close match and not anything worse then 12-8 or the capping war was close enough your heart slipped a beat then GG is cool. If you rolled the enemy so bad you laughed...then a simple "Trolled" is much better then saying GG.

I have gg on a loss 12-0 and on a win 12-0.

I have gg on a loss to a ninja base cap, and on a win where I played the role of ninja ;)

I do so because as long as the matches themselves really have no grander meaning within the context of the promises from PGI concerning Community Warfare, the wins are enjoyable, and the losses forgettable.

Now place those same matches within the context of a planet I'm trying to win or defend for my House, Merc Corp or Clan and that's a whole other kettle of fish entirely.

but until then, gg...
