Well... I was playing MPBT3025 at that time.

I have a very active mentality (you know how people say you don't feel pain in your dreams? aint true for me)
A generally poor memory as well - but what I do remember I tend to remember overly well.

Only time I really remember that day, is when it swings around again.... or I try to play SC.
(I get more angry than sad, but both are moods I try to avoid)

Never heard of Ascendency , kinda looks like Star Control crossed with Civ.

Have been playing Sins of a Solar Empire though - anyone know if the last Xpac is worth picking up?

what is star control? Speaking of which, I'm itching for a decent space fighter game. Preferably with multiplayer action. Any suggestions guys? No, SC doen't count until I get a beta invite AND it's playable lol

Have you tried Diaspora already?
A very good fan made Battlestar Galactica simulator, that is playing parallel to the 2003 BSG mini series plotline, showing the struggle of other survivors of the Cylon assault.

Another good one would be Wing Commander Saga. Also a fan made space sim, running parallel to the storyline of Wing Commander 3.

Both run on heavily modded FreeSpace2 engines.
Can't speak about any multiplayer functionality. I didn't even bother to look if they have it, when I played them.

If you want multiplayer, there are rumors about a revived and free Jumpgate server somewhere.

And yes... what is Star Control?

The first was cool, rather like Sins of a Solar Empire actually, no real story beyond to alliances pounding eachother, and no real campaign either (hence the Sins comparison)

The second was awesome - and brutal
- story was/is similar to Mass Effect - overwhelming army coming that you need to build an alliance to beat, all starting with one colony ship from the side that lost the last war at that!

Edit: wonky links
Also: I will have to take a look at Diaspora

Be warned!
You will feel crushing despair at the end of the campaign. Not only for the difficulty of some of the missions, but for the storyline and the decisions you have to make.

Really weird that I never heard of Star Control. I made a note to get it from GoG someday.

I love space games, fighter sims and stuff like that are a lot fun but I like RTS space ship games a bit more. Good one would be Homeworld and its expansion, Cataclysm (F**K you beast and your over powered sh*t!!) There is also Homeworld 2. The story is actually really good and game play is a blast. Recommend finding strategy guides for Homeworld 1 and Cataclysm as the campaigns can be hard. There are also a number of mods for Homeworld 2 as well, Starwars, Battlestar Galactica, Angels Fall First, and a few others.
Another fun one is Hegemonia Legions of Iron. Story line behind it is ok I guess but the game play is a lot of fun. Game play involves making an empire and managing it while fighting enemies. And when I mean making an empire, I'm talking about entire solar systems.

I'm strongly considering Star Wars since it's f2p and they just launched a space fighting module

Let me know how it goes if you do - several reviewers I (mostly :() trust gave mixed reviews
(with most of the negatives being the comparisons to WoW of course :()

You guys mean The Old Republic? The comparisons to WoW are pretty warranted. I never got into WoW, but apparently some of the skill trees are identical between the two games, and it's basically a "Holy Trinity/Healer Required" type of game. Especially if you wanted to do any of the group content. They did do a very good job of making it possible to solo any of the storylines though, while still keeping them challenging enough to be interesting.

One thing I did not like though was that no matter how powerful you were, it was effectively impossible to solo even the weakest World Boss because of the way they designed the engagements. Same for the "group" missions (not related to a story, repeatable, grind for epic gear, yadda yadda yadda). I used to play a bunch of City of Heroes/Villains, and while the power creep in that game was ludicrous it was fun to be able to solo missions designed for teams of 8. Or, with certain classes, giant monsters.

It was fun for a bit though, now that it's free maybe I should re-install just to dink around with the space ships again. When I played it there were not really a ton of space missions, but I hear that's been expanded a few times. I wouldn't say they go for realism or anything, and unless they changed it, they were path based maps in space with obstacles to dodge, not a free roam environment. Still, quite fun and did a good job of giving you the pace/feel of the Star Wars version of space combat.

Jedi Knight line was the most epic and fun, the smuggler has better lines and his story is good for a while, but after the first act it went south. Dark side characters were kinda fun, but I get bored with the classic MMO gameplay after a while and I couldn't bring myself to be enough of a racist to play the Sith line properly.

The environments are just dead sexy though. It was worth the play through just for the art alone.

All in all, it was pretty good and got a lot more bad press than it deserved. Funny how that happens when making games based on IPs that have rabid fan bases. Though I have to admit, had a friend not given it to me as a birthday gift, I might not have tried it out - but only because I'm not really that into MMO in the WoW mold.

SWTOR now has actual space PvP matches now on top of the rail-shooter missions.

Its F2P, so worth the free look. See how you like it.

O'Ryleh? Are you still on rails or is flight more free form?

I might have to check that out.

Yea that's what I've been wanting to check out (plus running around with a light saber once in a while can be fun I'd imagine :o )

Been with SWTOR since beta actually. Great game, more about the story than the PvP though.
It's much, much better for subscribers after lvl 20. Or people who sink money into the game for unlocks. Not truly an f2p model.
Space combat is cool, and they're building it up right now.

I left right before the Hutt cartel expansion, or thereabouts.

How is the post 50 content they've been adding since then?

Ia, R'yleh!

And it's freeform flight and new ships, too. Actually a nice add to a F2P game.
