A lot of it is just being sore losers.
The only really decent complaint I have seen about capping is the reduced rewards compared to wiping out the whole enemy team: but that is largely countered by the reduced time it takes to win that way.

It's also just more fun to fight a bit. However when community warfare his capping bases may end up happing more.

I get it, but that's also why you can choose what match type you play. If you're playing assault or conquest you best be ready to win or lose based on the match type and not by killing the entire other team.

If the last enemy is hiding or cannot be found, then take the base.
If you get Terra Therma multiple times in a row, taking the base saves time.
Some folks want a game mode where everyone lines up and faces each other across a small field with no terrain. So when others actually use tactics that do not exclusively revolve around hammering the fire button they get bitchy. Remember, never is it their fault for dying or losing; crappy teammates, hax, wusses that cap, etc.
Most players (with reading comprehension greater than spore mold) acknowledge that capturing the enemy base is one of three ways of winning Assault. It says so, right there on the prep screen before a match. Ignore the haters and keep capping - there are many players that will thank you for it. It is not your fault that they don't understand that they have Skirmish if they dislike capping so much.

Also, I still harbor a great deal of resent to the 8-man Jenner teams that did base rushes in the old days.

Well tbh. This was me until Skirmish arrived albeit without the personal insults.
Why? Well because I pressed launch to have a battle, and it used to irk me no end when I'd search around looking for a scrap and not finding one because either my team mates or the enemy team capped it out without anyone seeing each other (Terra Therma, Alpine Peaks were notorious for this). I'd tell my team to get off the cap so we could fight as often as I ask if anyone wants to play chess or marbles next.
But since Skirmish was introduced, I have no complaints.I play both game modes but thats my choice now.
Really if anyone is upset with someone capping they should be upset with themselves for not picking the game mode for the mission they wanted to play. Its the check box in the middle of the screen after you press launch, easy answer to all the angst.

Skirmish is fun because It does not involve fixed tactics, mostly. Except on alpine, and manifold. There is terrain it is preferable to hold there.

At this point one of the guys in our team says "NO CAP! KILL".
We ignore him.
"ONE LEFT NO CAP!"
Then he starts shooting at all of us standing there on the cap. Like full guns style. Then the match ended.
I don't really know what else to say.

The new spawn points seem to have fixed that problem, but I also hated those games where all that happened was each team walked from one side of the map to the other... exciting!

Tell them to grow up...besides, that's probably the sole reason people clamored for a mode like Skirmish and we got it. And with the addition of turrets, I think Assault's going to lose the "straight to cap" mentality while retaining it's flavor.

Mole, I sympathize with you. Capping is a legitimate win. On the other hand, it's not very much fun if, as others have described, a rush of both teams to the others base and the one with the most light/fast mechs win. That scenario is boring, but it is a legitimate win.
So for those that don't like the potential for a cap based win, select skirmish and you won't have to express your dislike for those that prefer to play by the rules.

We're here to have fun. A match that ends prematurely by an objective capture that prevents you from taking part in 'stompy mech action' can feel like a waste of time. Some players also think you didn't "earn" that win, because an undefended cap is an easy target.
Realistically, you're absolutely right and capping is a stated objective for that mode. Anyone who does not want that objective in their game mode is free to choose a different game mode.
As for earning your win? Turrets are coming for all maps and a fast, sneaky cap that avoids confrontation will be an extinxct play style. You'll have more trouble completing that cap, and your teammates will have more time to murder the enemy with lots of guns during your base cap adventure.
