Currently you have the top <1% who are actually competing, and the other >99% of players just log on for the "played xx matches" freebie.
Theres no real incentive for practically all of the playerbase to compete.

oh he hated the lurms, he really did. I played a few liight matches myself and lurms really makes it hard, focuedfire on lights normally gets you killed even if only like half of the missiles hit, it still hurts.

Honestly I am not sure if would 'compete' again.. If LRM storm is still around. (Too frustrating )
But guess that free chassis choice this time around was a major factor as well.

I am logged in... and that option is not there for me.
I have the same problem. Website says I'm opted-in, but there is no ranking to be found besides the top 10 under Kurita. I made like 30 matches since Friday, so there has to be a score atleast.

however hold the top 50 spot for 2 days. but after that the pressure just was extremely high to get back up to the top 10 after the first day. sadly some people just get those lucky games in that just shine so extreme they shoot up. rather then being in the front lines with all the keep players. not to mention sometimes the groups your ending up with wonder still whats going on and just like to get under the shower wondering why they die so fast.
but, its been fun and i do agree on like the top 100 shining out to actually getting a prize rather then just the top 5.
Grand prize top 10. second prize top 50. 3de prize top 100. amongst like 8000 on a faction ^^

What I am curious about is this is my stats and how I was dropped with people:
Kills / Death 132 / 64
Wins / Losses 52 / 45
Kill / Death Ratio 2.06
So why am I being dropped with people on the top ten lists? My ELO can not be that high (I figured I was around average ELO, and I have less than 100 games under my belt). Is it because the matchmaker has such a high range that it really doesn't matter what your ELO is unless you are very high or very low?

Whatever, I've seen this LRM-kinda fuckups from PGI so many times that I just don't give a shit anymore.
This is not a "Thinking man's shooter" anymore, it's all 'bout luck and what kind of team you are lucky enough to get on your side.

Teams top-heavy with boats were often outmanouvered and reduced to scrap.
Yes there were loads of boats (myself included) but too often they would be exchanging fire at 700m+ and became stationary so flanking them became a theme as the tournament wore on.
As the better players became accustomed to the LRM storm ECM appeared everywhere and successful boating returned to what it always is - cooperation between players hunting ecm to allow the LRMs to be effective. NARC was noticable and very welcome!
The most difficult task for the LRM boats was to get enough missiles in the air. ECM blankets, much better use of cover, players not targetting (deliberately?) and lots of incoming arty/airstrikes. Getting a solid lock was a nightmare at times!
When we could finally let fly there was so much competition inevitably the spoils were most often shared making a top 50 place difficult to achieve.
Complaining? Not in the slightest - it was damned hard work but fun
Finishing 53rd with 1932 was not easy to achieve with LRMs.
Congrats to all the winners.
Great dedication from the Steiner lot - sometimes all I could see was endless mechs of blue!

Wait, it hasn't always been about luck? Some games I see 5-6 DDC on the other side, some games I am on the side of the tonnage and ecm. I figure its all random.

You forgot which team has more arty/air/LRM spam.
My definition includes those. Besides that, I love how my armor blows off by friendly LRM-fire when I'm brawling with enemy whom I've targetted. When brawling, targetting that enemy is basically signing own death sentence 'cause you'll get fire from front and back.

LRM boats are just opportunities for more kills.
The stats wipe did not reset your elo. The current threshold is 1400 elo difference to be in the same bracket. A new player starts with 1400, Max elo is 2800 and you get one individual elo score for each weight chassis. So if for example a player has an elo of 2100, he will be able to find people from a range of 1400-2800, which basically also includes new players in their "trial stalker"-mechs. That being said, the matchmaker always tries to balance elo, before weight and anything else. So if I was a player with a medio-core elo of 1500 range queves up, chances are, that he won't be available to the 2200 player because he finds a match in a way lower spectrum.
If you happen to be let's say 2600 elo, your spectrum of available players are limited even more simply because there are less players in his range (1900-2800). Here's a graph of PGI's last released elo distribution (was released shortly after a adjustment so I would assume that the spectrum is broader now - april 2013)
What I personally would like to see for the tournaments is that they either completely disable elo for the duration of the tournaments or score according to your "kills - elo score" instead of a plain "20 per kill".

lol i was doing that during the tournament, I wasn't exactly brawling but i was only targeting people long enough to see where they are open and than immediately after un-targeted that guy so i would get the kill

My tournament experience was pretty terrible in general, my W/L ratio was somewhere around 0.5 (lost a ton of games despite doing 800-1100 damage in them), and the game crashed with "pure function call" every time I exited a match after dying. Somewhat frustrating. I went to sleep 5 hours before the end after grinding myself back to the top 10, and when I woke up I was 10 points short of the top 10. Oh well, until next time.
There were some great matches in there, too. Again, seeing the top players play is really something else. Thanks for the games all, and congratulations to the winners!

Very well done to everyone who won some MC! It was a lot of fun and I didn't even have to stay glued to my comp for 72hrs at a time. Hopefully the next tournament is along the same lines (Faction) but more team oriented play!!!
