On the one hand, I personally tend to offer both my team and the opposing team a salute or some sort of acknowledgment before and after every match. Even in 12-0 stomps, there are, generally speaking, a few who did their best to pull their weight on that "0" side of the coin, and we all have been around for matches that were far closer than the final score would indicate, where even something like 12-3 doesn't truly tell the whole story, and the "3" side actually really fought hard.
Also, I do like the long-standing tradition that you allude to, that exists in most sports. In my mind, it just sort of overall "classes the place up a bit" to have a community that exhibits this behavior.
On the other hand, I have definitely seen those folks that use it as a snide but subtle way to rub salt in the wound (I especially despise the "GGclose" set), and have certainly been on the receiving end where even if it was meant as a compliment, it certainly doesn't feel like it, since I know what happened on my side of the match, and know that we didn't earn that at all. This can make it feel a bit dismal on nights I'm struggling to put together any sort of hot streak.
At the end of the day though, my personal tendency is to err on the side of offering that respect. My sort of middle ground approach for a while now has been to ditch the "GG" altogether, and default to a "<o" to open the match, and something ranging from a "Cheers, Reds <o" (when we stomp them) to a "Well fought, Reds <o" (when they stomp us) accordingly...
I know my personal intention is never to taunt or goad. It just ain't my style.

I prefer to be Mr. Sneaky McBackStabby in a light. I want PGI to release the UM-80 with ECM because that would be my ultimate mech. But that is another thread....
Due to the event, I saw that there a reward for one of the assaults that I own. OK, I'll be that guy.
Modded the AHN-1A and dropped.
Too slow, yuck.
Too tall, ick.
No skills, typical.
I eventually got into the fray, and OMG. Mechs parts flying off of the opposing team. One shot killing of a light pilot (<o). Utter and complete devastation. After completing the objective, giant smile on my face. I even got enough XP to put in 5 skill points into the thing and definitely met the 500 point damage criteria.
I am so afraid to drop in this thing again in case it was a fluke.

Conquest and Assault seem to be the most challenging game modes especially on Alpine Peaks.
