Urbanmech Arrives On The Battlefield!

The UrbanMech IIC is a Clan upgrade of the original UrbanMech. Around the same time as the development of the OmniMech during the Golden Century, Clan Coyote technicians reworked this venerable design. They studied battle data from as far back as the Amaris Civil War and used this research as the basis for their upgrades. They apparently decided that the UrbanMech (known as the Urbie to its fans and detractors alike) did not need much reworking, as they simply upgraded the autocannon to a Type 9 Ultra Autocannon/10 and the Small Laser to a Series 1 Extended Range Small Laser. The more advanced Clan technology allowed the technicians to increase the 'Mech's speed by fifty percent and improve its jumping capacity to 90 meters, though they did not change the six tons of standard armor or the ten standard heat sinks. While the Coyotes field the most UrbanMech IICs, the 'Mechs are also fielded by the Snow Ravens, Ice Hellions, and Hell's Horses.[3]

I've been reading the background info for the Clans on Sarna.net, and I knew there was some reason I was digging Clan Coyote more than the others...

Give me equal BV (or Cbill!) value on Urbies and Twolves, and so long as we do not fight on an open plain, I can guarantee the Urbies will at least give a good fight!

Cannot think of how else - since some of them they walk backwards faster than you walk forwards

I recall one of them moved into a canyon, and I jump jetted six Urbies surrounding the guy with barely an escape route hehe. He did cut his way through, but not before taking a few rounds of autocannon.

You might be confusing them with autonomous robots, but it is an interchangable term.
I realise there are other robotics within the BT universe, but that's hardly a solid argument here.

I guess if you refer to the robot battles etc on TV, they can be considered driven. However, all the manufacturing robots and commerical/home robots for sale are programmed and are autonomous.
From Wiki, "A robot is a mechanical or virtual artificial agent, usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by a computer program or electronic circuitry. Robots can be autonomous or semi-autonomous and range from humanoids such as Honda's Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) and TOSY's TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot (TOPIO) to industrial robots, collectively programmed swarm robots, and even microscopic nano robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own."
So I guess if you are calling AMS a semi-autonomous feature, then I guess you can call mechs with AMS, robots.
So if someone DC's in battle, does this robot that someone is piloting in the game, no longer becomes defined as robot and becomes a mech in your viewpoint, or is it always a robot?
Just out of curiosity what do you do for a living and what is your background concerning robotics?

I describe MWO as "the big stompy robot game" to my friends. However I wouldn't correct someone that was using the term "robot" correctly because that would make me seem ignornant.

However, in modern nomenculture, popular culture and general, the term Robot has also come to be synonymous with Mecha.
Mecha itself, simply means mechanical, and the origins of the term are so vague as to be anything.
I have mech drafting pencils for example.
To also quote Wikipedia: "Mecha is a science fiction genre that centers on robots or machines controlled by people. These machines vary greatly in size, shape, and appearance. Some are little more than cars with arms and legs, while others are giant humanoid constructs. Different sub-genres exist, with varying connotations of realism. The concept of Super Robot and Real Robot are two such examples found in Japanese anime."
"The word "mecha" (メカ meka?) is an abbreviation first used in Japanese of the word "mechanical". In Japanese, mecha encompasses all mechanical objects, including cars, guns, computers, and other devices. In this sense, it is extended to humanoid, human-sized robots and such things as the boomers from Bubblegum Crisis, the similar replicants of Blade Runner; even cyborgs can be referred to as mecha. The Japanese use the term "robot" (ロボット robotto?) or "giant robot" to distinguish limbed vehicles from other mechanical devices.[1] One prominent example is the anime Mazinger Z, where the term "Super Robot", features in the Japanese theme song."
Additionally, the film Robot Jox further cemented the interchangeable term of 'Mecha' and 'Robot' within our vocabulary.
Technically, in the english language, yes, in a technical a Robot is an autonomous machine that can perform a task or tasks with minimal input from the user, but additionally, all robots would technically be Mecha also.
Yet in a broader sense, and other languages, robot is a perfectly acceptable terminolgy.
As others have stated (and I do it myself), Battlech is often refered to as 'big stompy robots', mecha anime commonly refered to as 'giant robot shows', etc.

There is an already-extant thread for this topic...
Also, BattleMechs actually aren't robots (see here, here, and here) - they are "robotic" (e.g. "robot-like"), but they are not "true robots".

A 'mech can pilot itself from point A to point B provided someone tells it where point B is and that it should start walking. It could in theory fight by itself. That it doesn't is more tribute to the idea that even in the 31st century we apparently have something against totally removing the human from the killing decision loop.
