I've just discovered this in our declassified mission reports. Members of the Disavowed were able to successfully data-mine a ComStar archive and were able to uncover the true reason for the TimberWolf/MadCat's infectious popularity. Below is a 2D image they were successful in obtaining and decrypting from the datacache:

Hahahaha.... Awesome mate. Seriously, the reseen redo of this mech looks fantastic, why the heck are we not seeing it? (no pun intended)

I think it is just nice looking Mech, I like better the elbow chicken leg than the humanoid, plus nice missile launchers and arms made for war not grabbing stuff.

My mom said that it is because it looks like a big *****, so is "Freudian thing" much like super sport cars. :P

I think that it's fame is mostly thanks to it being the cover model for previous MW games. It maintained it's popularity because it's a good mech, but that's not the reason it became popular.

Honestly, in terms of Clan Heavies, I prefer a Summoner. Versatile and quite literally flexible.

I always liked the Vulture more myself. It has very sleek missile racks and a head that are cut at an angle. It also runs faster.

Its very well balanced but I think it comes down its appearance marking the first major revision/shakeup to the game in over half a decade (The Clans and Level 2 Rules).

Many remember that first moment they walked into a hobby shop, saw the cover of TRO 3050 sporting a Catapult with Marauder arms. They knew right then we were in for something totally new and different.

Exactly.. the Mad Cat is what defines the "shape" or icon of a classic Mech to me.. the "chicken style" mechs are the ones that identify the franchise in my mind.. and the Mad Cat (and similar variants) are the perfect example of that style of mech.

I see alot of comments on because it was on the cover of MW2/3. I first saw it on the cover of 3050, and thought it was sexy then. Although the much hated Assassin is still my fave.

it's the epitome of the mech aesthetics. no gundam/humanoid bs. pure functionality.

Fast for its size, excellent pay load, can be outfitted for any type of role, at any range.

This...

Timberwolf I would have to say is one of the best for Multi Purpose Roles, and its one of the best looking Mechs on top of it all....

When I look at this mech.. I see a predator. It's like the t-Rex of the mech world.

People always question the merits of art and whether it's all subjective, or if there are truths.

The timberwolf is testament to the idea that there are abstract, indescribable aspects to things we consider beautiful.

The timber wolf looks exactly like what a mech should look like. Its design is unique to the universe. The timberwolf alone represents everything Mechwarrior is. Its not gundam and it doesn't move like a human. It's a machine of war. It was designed to function, not to look pretty. But still, it's beautiful.

The Timberwolf/Madcat is great and all, but come on. We all know the Mad Dog/Vulture is where its at. If this mech ever finds its way into the game I will throw all the money I have to at Piranha to get it. Of course saying that without having the Legendary Founder's tag is a bit off but I'll remedy that soon enough.

Sadly I was dissapointed with Mechwarrior 4's portrayal of the Mad Dog for no other real reason other than the arms on it

I love the Madcat because for me it rates function over aesthetics and yet somehow the ugly duckling blossoms as you use it.

That, coupled with it was the first intro i ever saw that sold me on the battletech universe and made me scream like a schoolgirl and i was hooked.

Incidentally, on the MW2 intro did anyone notice that the mguns are coming from the arm mounts and not the torso?

Its the best all around clan workhorse omni mech at 75 tons and its default variant can handle any situation. Machine guns for infantry, lasers for short and medium range, missles for long range and with its speed can change ranges easily.

Especially in the videogames it is a great all-a-round mech with no real drawbacks that can be customized to fill any specilized role if the need arises. The only thing it lacks in the basic version are jump jets, but iirc, there are variants that are outfitted with them.
It also has a very distictinve look that combines elements of other well-liked designs into one.

I'm not a big fan though, as i like mechs with charakter (certain drawbacks combined with specific strenghts), and the all-around-good layout of the Timber Wolf makes it rather bland. I also think it looks much to fragile for what it is and the whole design would be more fitting for a light/med chassis... but that's just personal preference. Once (if) clans arrive in MW:O i'll be happy to see them on the battlefield... i'll just not pilot one myself.
