one of the few mechs that dont look like a ripoff of something else and/or a trashcan

seriously, all the mechs look pretty decent in the games due to having actual artists model them, but in the original source books they all looked terrible. you can go to sarna's website and look at them. they look like they were drawn by a 14 year old without much artistic talent.

It is popular because of its looks.
A really nice design.
And it has been quite prominent in the books too...

Its an iconic Mech. It looks good and is a well rounded design. packs a punch without being a snail has many possible uses.

A good allround mech...

Because when I think Battletech I picture an Atlas and a Madcat staring eachother down.

And I also think, "man that big skull guy is gonna get his *** kicked".

For some reason I also think, "why is Boba Fett the referee"?

The Madcat/Timber Wolf is what happens when a Hell Bringer and a Catapult have a love child.

for me is mw 2 merc...prefaction: I was 10 or so back then, I could not find mechwarrior 2 anywhere, so after playing the first I got the 2 merc, I also did not know anything about lore at all...long story short, I did not know about clans, clantech etc. Anyway, first time you meet one, if you had a good career so far you'll be sitting in an atlas (or awesome, because it's more awesome than an atlas), with a good assault/heavy lance with you...in what seems to be an easy mission you see this nimble almost cute thing, and you are like, "oh, gotta have myself one to cuddle", but in the meanwhile "you gonna taste my lightning, sucker!!!" seconds after the cute thing starts shooting her double lrm 20s at you. By the time the welcoming missiles hit you 2 large laser that are also hammering on, (you still are out of max range in your awesome, and if you're in the aforementioned atlas, well though s***t), so you think "ok baby, so many weapons, so little armor"...not really...ah, and she can nearly outrun you in reverse. and does not overheat..thanks to plain bad AI she'll eventually close in enough to get some ppc love, and die. but, yeah, it does tend to make a lasting an impression :D

It looks cool :D

Besides, a great missle platform that can also carry a pretty good PPC loadout... Yea, mostly it looks cool :D

I think it's supposed to be a poorly drawn Victor.

Those guys weren't in Flak Jackets..that was an entire LANCE of MechWarriors...still remember how brown-panted Panther sounded that entire time he was baiting the thing in his Raven..especially this line after he got its attention with two SRMs to the back. "...g-got it's attention sir..."...his Raven's foot actually SKIDDED when he turned around.

Do the words "If looks could kill" mean anything to you. The MadCat not only has the look but the goods to back it up.

Exactly. When Mechwarrior2 came out, sundenly a bazzilion people who had never heard of BatteTech sudenly became interested. That game somewhat glorified the MadCat/TimberWolf platform, and MechCommandered turned it into something of a holy grail by making it something you couldnt buy and had to capture if you wanted one.

Yea, its an esthetically pleasing form, and in the tt game it has its virtues, but the MW2/MC influence cannot be discounted.

And only 2 (or was it 3?) to capture in the whole damn' game. Never mind the game design made it comically overpowered (no hardpoint restrictions + jump jet capability + tonnage as primary restriction + ungodly OP c/ER-PPCs on the arms). And that classic 3rd mission.

But for me, the Mad Cat will always be that badass from the MC1 trailer who took on a well-organized lance of IS 'mechs and nearly won.

Aesthetics
Balance of speed, firepower, armour, torso agility and target profile
Canonical backstory of its name and first appearance

Because people like this whole ABC thing.

It has that huge nose that is easy to hit so you can kill it and the spam behind it quickly and easily.

All Clan mechs are popular. Some of the most requested are the Timberwolf (madcat), Mad Dog (Vulture) and Summoner (thor).

The D variant of the madcat I believe 2 erppc and 4 cssrm6's was also such a dependable variant. In some MW3 match games you could only pick a stock variant and D was chosen for its amazing game play and range. I'm sure that this also helped make this mech iconic as people could really feel how strong it is.

In MW4 you couldn't actually make variant D because they totally messed up the madcat in that game. The best you could do would be to fit 2 ERPPC and 4 cssrm4's not 6's. This REALY pissed me off as I wanted to play this mech but due to its "nerfed" nature in MW4 I was forced to get into an assault mech or another heavy.

Now that I think about it, in cannon I believe that Variant D also had a single small laser as well but this was not in the games so.

The great thing about this variant is that the streaks were strong against the extremely fast light mechs. You could snapshot fire and the missiles would hit even though the mini mech was only in your crosshair for a split second. Having 4 6's could knock them down too. Then you could fire your 2 erppcs into its back, leg, or face.

The torso twist plus arms allowed you to run away will still firing at least one of your PPCs into the enemies face. It is just so versitile!

I can just go on and on how awesome this mech is. Do not get me started on some of the other varrients.

This, pretty much. The art in the FASA books (and most novel covers, IMO) is simply atrocious. Perspectives all warped, chassis that can apparently bend where there's no joints, rubbery appendages of unequal length (probably related to botched or silly perspective), and just plain simplistic imagery. Whereas most people's intro to the Mad Cat was the MW2 box art. Actual quality art. :D

Good news is, MWO's artists actually make Mechs look like armoured units, actual bipedal tanks. Just look at the Cat and Stalker. That's excellent design. Makes me look forward to open beta. :D

This is why I originally liked it

http://aircraft-phot...show-ww2-52.jpg

It does look great anyway, but the retro B-29 cpckpit gave it a sense of style, more Mechs should do that.
