Why exactly is the Timberwolf/mad cat so darn popular?

seriously, all the mechs look pretty decent in the games due to having actual artists model them, but in the original source books they all looked terrible. you can go to sarna's website and look at them. they look like they were drawn by a 14 year old without much artistic talent.

A really nice design.
And it has been quite prominent in the books too...

And I also think, "man that big skull guy is gonna get his *** kicked".
For some reason I also think, "why is Boba Fett the referee"?

Besides, a great missle platform that can also carry a pretty good PPC loadout... Yea, mostly it looks cool

Exactly. When Mechwarrior2 came out, sundenly a bazzilion people who had never heard of BatteTech sudenly became interested. That game somewhat glorified the MadCat/TimberWolf platform, and MechCommandered turned it into something of a holy grail by making it something you couldnt buy and had to capture if you wanted one.
Yea, its an esthetically pleasing form, and in the tt game it has its virtues, but the MW2/MC influence cannot be discounted.
And only 2 (or was it 3?) to capture in the whole damn' game. Never mind the game design made it comically overpowered (no hardpoint restrictions + jump jet capability + tonnage as primary restriction + ungodly OP c/ER-PPCs on the arms). And that classic 3rd mission.
But for me, the Mad Cat will always be that badass from the MC1 trailer who took on a well-organized lance of IS 'mechs and nearly won.

Balance of speed, firepower, armour, torso agility and target profile
Canonical backstory of its name and first appearance
Because people like this whole ABC thing.

In MW4 you couldn't actually make variant D because they totally messed up the madcat in that game. The best you could do would be to fit 2 ERPPC and 4 cssrm4's not 6's. This REALY pissed me off as I wanted to play this mech but due to its "nerfed" nature in MW4 I was forced to get into an assault mech or another heavy.
Now that I think about it, in cannon I believe that Variant D also had a single small laser as well but this was not in the games so.
The great thing about this variant is that the streaks were strong against the extremely fast light mechs. You could snapshot fire and the missiles would hit even though the mini mech was only in your crosshair for a split second. Having 4 6's could knock them down too. Then you could fire your 2 erppcs into its back, leg, or face.
The torso twist plus arms allowed you to run away will still firing at least one of your PPCs into the enemies face. It is just so versitile!
I can just go on and on how awesome this mech is. Do not get me started on some of the other varrients.

This, pretty much. The art in the FASA books (and most novel covers, IMO) is simply atrocious. Perspectives all warped, chassis that can apparently bend where there's no joints, rubbery appendages of unequal length (probably related to botched or silly perspective), and just plain simplistic imagery. Whereas most people's intro to the Mad Cat was the MW2 box art. Actual quality art.

Good news is, MWO's artists actually make Mechs look like armoured units, actual bipedal tanks. Just look at the Cat and Stalker. That's excellent design. Makes me look forward to open beta.

It does look great anyway, but the retro B-29 cpckpit gave it a sense of style, more Mechs should do that.
