There is no "best" weapon. BT is basically the most gigantic game of rock/paper/scissors/ferret/monkey ever made.

It’s up to the pilot skill and their ability to out think their victim. I have seen LRM decoy builds to take out “elite” young kids that had “mad skillz” up close. Toss a couple of LRM volleys out there any wait for the hunters to race in. Suddenly the stooge is faced with a Catapult maxed out in SRM/Machine Guns at point blank range. The hunter is killed before he can communicate back ( I am sure all the younger players will be on VOIP of some kinds but one can hope). You then move to a new spot and send out more LRMs to entice another scout/hunter.

Agree with the rock paper scissors. ERML is probably the most efficient, but superior range + burst owns efficient builds all day long. So you out maneuver and outlast that burst, etc etc. It goes around and around.

Honestly the best weapon will be the one you play best with. It's true in any game.

Medium Laser (and when the Clans show up ER Medium Laser) is your best overall weapon as almost all combat ends up being close range anyway. The only issues being large open landscapes, but unless your enemy fights in retrograde, that range will be diminishing till you are in slugfest range.

Now if they didn't have hardpoints... MGx8 and a fast mech, chews through people fast.

I had a real Love/Hate relationship with multiple MG modded mechs in TT - the crit hunting potential with no heat was crazy, but the idea just seemed wrong

The medium laser is the simplest choice - low-ish heat, moderate damage, ok range, light weight, low space requirements. Missile systems also tend to be efficient for damage/tonnage, though their tendency to distribute damage makes them less popular as a primary armament than direct-fire weapons, and they can also be defeated by AMS or limited by ECM.

The Gauss is a particularly good choice for heavier units, since they can more readily support the weight of a large ballistic weapon as a primary armament. The low heat also allows mounting of PPCs and/or Large Lasers as additional long-range firepower.

Of current tech I'd have to say the best weapons are

Medium Laser- low weight good punch decent range

SRM4-good crit seeking plus it is the same weight as an LRM5 if you want to swap for longer range.

Also 3/4 missiles hit on a seven in TT so there is that

LRM15+Artemis IV Lower weight than LRM20 but the same or slightly more average damage. Plus you get 2 extra shots.

LBX-10 First poke a hole then through buckshot at the problem

Sorry, couldn't pick just one.

the theme im seeing is that the medium laser is a good choice, is this just good for light/fast mechs? im planning on going with a heavy mech, so what about the Gauss rifle?

Ditch the AC/20, LRMs, and SRMs on your atlas and fill it in with a Gauss Rifle and as many Medium Lasers as you can! Steiners need no heat sinks....

The one activated by that switch in your cockpit marked "self destruct". Unfortunately it has a very short range and can only be fired once.

Seriously though, there is no "best" weapon. Each of them has pros and cons. But I'm found of...

1.) 15+ damage weapons that can decap an opponent in one shot

2.) sleeper weapons that are cheap and don't generate much heat so you can mount a ton. But MWO nerfed that with "hardpoints" which limits the number of weapons you can mount on any mech.

3.) Otherwise Streak SRM-6, LRM 15s or 20s with Artemis IV, Ultra AC/10, and ER Medium Lasers are my favorites.

My personal preference has always been LRM 20s or PPCs. Both do a decent amount of damage and they can stagger your opponents like no other.

i always liked finding a heavy that can equip 2 lbx ac20's and throwing the rest of the tonnage into engine for close ranged madness...tough to call the lbx ac20 the "best" weapon though because of obvious range, recycle time, and ammunition capacity issues...but nothing feels quite as good as one-shotting a mech...except maybe knocking one over with your first shot then cutting the engine and standing right in front of the mech as it tries to pick itself up and finishing it executioner style

however, in terms of general usefulness id have to say the ac5 (if the light knockback effect we saw in MW4 is there). your target cant aim cuz he keeps getting knocked around and you're doing good dps at anything but truely long range...only problem is potential ammunition trouble, but from the looks of it MWO maps will have lots of cover making truely long range fights with direct fire weapons unlikely and with the limit of 12 v 12 you dont have to worry about ammunition as much as single player missions.
