Would love to get into a game or three, or even a campaign, but would probably need a bit of hand-holding on getting it all set up.

I have it downloaded, and am going to go through some bot battles and learn the ropes. After that, I would
love to play some campaigns and get involved in a long running story. Where is the best place to start?
Thanks.

All I can say is, that if you play vs. a bot, do not exceed about 8-10 mechs per side, unless you like waiting 5 to 10 minutes for the AI to move each mech. So, like, an hour per turn or more.
And that is on my new monster, E3770-K 3.2 Ghz Quad Core 8GB RAM with Intel Smart-Response SSD RAID...

Either I have forgotten some obscure rule, or it is broken.
I'm trying to build a 30 ton mech, IS, with Double Heat Sinks and an XL Engine. If I do so, it wants me to allocate 3 to 7 of the Double Heat Sinks as though they are not included in the engine... any advice?

The more speed the mech has, the higher the engine rating, and the more heat sinks will be included in it.
Due to the size of your 'mech (a 30-ton with an XL engine), there will inevitably be leftover heat sinks unless its speed is 9/14 or higher

But I thought that every engine, regardless of size, had 10 heat sinks built in???

Not true at all.
The number of heat sink criticals included is entirely dependent on the engine's rating.
Some engines can even have more than 10 heat sinks built in.
For example, an engine rated at 500* can include up to 20 built-in heat sinks.
*Such an engine (even an XL version) is pretty darn big, so have fun fitting it onto a 'mech.

Seeing as I'm on the road all the time these days, I don't have any time to actually build up a gaming group to play the TT game starter set I just bought last week

SO, I've downloaded MegaMek and have no experience. Who wants to teach me?

We'd need to set up some way to do voice comms, but I'd love to learn with you. I know the basics, just haven't actually played against another player before. I'm sure I can figure it out.
What time(s) / day(s) are you looking to play?

I'm usually around in the evenings (5pm CST), but it also depends on friends and if they want to play LoL since I'm the Jungle/Solo-Top in pretty much all the comps they like to run. Is it possible for MegaMek to start up like a campaign or something and be able to do it turn by turn as a person logs in?

It is turn based, you can save the game and re-connect to it (unless vs. AI, AI can't seem to reconnect or whatever.)
There are tools that let it do a true campaign - even full salvage rules and repair costs and all - but I have no idea how to do all that. I know how to set up the map, select units, configure the win conditions, etc.

Well I'm up for whatever. I think getting a massive campaign between members of the Forums could be pretty excellent!

AI can be reconnected, but it has to be done through in-game commands.
mekhq (available from the same site where megamek is downloaded) is the primary tool for setting up full campaigns for people to play
I, however, am not familiar with the workings of mekhq, so I can't be of much help beyond that

It is reasonably fast in smaller matches. The more units you add, the longer it takes for the AI to move each unit. 4 to 8 units per side is about the most I have been able to use with the AI and complete a fight in one session (about 2 hours.)
At some point I had it working so that I could see the AI as he tried to move - and each unit it tries to move to every hex that unit can move to, so you see each unit all blipping all over in its movement range until the AI finds a position it likes.
MegaMek AI is pretty terrible, all things considered.

Are you making sure to set the bot's units to be controlled by the bot? Did you go in and add a bot first? I'll set up a game tonight and post steps I take if needed...
