So, I broke down and bought the Summoner, on the basis of "Hey, Heavy with Jumpjets!" The Timberwolf had 5 tons and an upgrade on it, but I enjoy the maneuverability of JJs.

Recently went through the variants listed for release, and discovered that the Timberwolf will be coming with a variant with JJs, four out of 5 (4/5) of which will be transferable using OmniPods. After looking over the 3050TRO, I'm wondering where the Summoner can actually shine versus the Timberwolf. From what I'm seeing the TW has 2.5 tons more armor, and comparable, if not slightly better, pod space after the weight adjustment for JJs. The Summoner does have the option of double AMS, and JJs standard on all models, but with OmniPods, that means substantially less.

So, for those of you out there more familiar with ClanTech than I, how do the two chasis actually compare? As always, thank you for your insight.

you can run the tbolt 9rs in the same setup as the prime summoner without the JJs and see why its not a good mech configuration.

It's the cooler, hipper chassis, but otherwise... :)

The Timberwolf is consider by many to be the best Clan mech. I agree with this assessment. It's a good blend of speed and firepower. Pilot preference is king in my opinion so I recommend you look for yourself. Here's links for you to look for yourself.

Enjoy!

Edit to fix broken link.

Give the summoner 360 degree torso rotation and problem solved.

Without JJs it wouldve been purely mediocre compared to the Masakari. But the JJs really do make it the most well-rounded of the clan mechs. I wouldnt say its the best because best is subjective. The Daishi has twice the firepower of the Mad Cat so its hard to say the Mad Cat is always better than the Daishi. The Mad Cat will however always be better than the Thor.

I heard the Summoner was going to have a big hammer and a special unique module that lets it call down lightning strikes on targets. Who wouldn't want that?

It isn't entirely clear whether or not swapping the pods will give the Jump Jet hard points to other Mad Cat variants or not. (Major bonus for Mad Cat if it's possible...but PGI could just say "nope" as well for the sake of balance)

Aside from that, the Thor has Jump jets on most versions already without having to switch pods around, which in some ways is more convenient, and also can give a bonus to earned XP if you use only stock pods for a given variant.

After seeing how much of an improvement the Timber Wolf is over the Mad Dog, I can see how people would feel that the Summoner is outclassed by the Timber Wolf. I do believe the Mad Dog has it worse though.
In Mechwarrior 2 I never picked the Timberwolf over the Mad Dog because it was so huge that it couldn't avoid shots for it's speed (and because it felt slow, must've been the camera position). However, the size differences we'll probably see won't be enough of a difference, since MWO players have much better accuracy than anything in MW2 because they actually lead a little.

Mad Dog

Whatever the case, even if Mad Dog gets in and is underpowered I will play it. I just wish it had Jumpjets. :)

I'm just glad I'm not behind balancing for the clans. This looks like it's going to be a nightmare to balance.

One thing that will be annoying on the Summoner will be it's bassackwards side mounted cockpit......firing its left gun into the side of a mountain all the time....ofc that will be why its going to be used 99% as a poptart...

I've been checking out many of the builds that both mechs can field via

http://mwomercs.com/...we-know-so-far/

and

http://www.sarna.net...Equipment_Lists

the list that SirLANSalot made is really good

and it seems that the Summoner D is going to be a really strong contender as well as the Timberwolf S. Both will be able to do some really interesting builds. that is, of course, if the Clan weapons are launching with the same specs that Sarna lists them as, and we don't know for sure if they are.

But it's fun as hell. And it's not a good comparison anyway. Too slow, no JJs, doesn't use Clan weapons and so forth. Let's just wait and see k?

The Urbanmech....isnt it a light with an autocannon on it? Little armor, no speed, big as a house........why the fascination with this thing? You couldnt get me to drive it if you gave me 5000MC to do it...

The fact that it's one of the worst Battletech mechs, and it looks similar to a trash can is the whole reason why people like it. :)
