Only 1 of each variant in MWLL is a canon build, every fixed variant has been built to be useful it a designed roll, 99% of all variants are not canon,

example the Atlas prime while based on the K2 base line has been altered to be viable swapping out its ERLL for ERPPC downgrading its LRM system to smaller racks, including 2 ERML as backup. The only true stock Atlas is the D model which is taken directly from the AS7-D config and that despite its lack of tech is still extremely effective.

Customization is nice, but the almost complete freedom in MWO and other mech games (besides MW4) does done the same effect, now you can just strap identical builds to another mech and make others obsolete. MWO could benefit from the system that MW4 used in its limited sized hard points.

MWLL mech lab was going to mimic that of MW4 having slot sizes for small , medium , heavy and assault class slots. But the fact is 99% of variants do not exist in lore they were built in mind on how to make each variant viable. So you will see something like the AS7-D A that has 3 RAC'5's 4 SRM-4 plus GECM that is not a canon build but it is very effective. or you could go with the B variant that has 2 PPC 1 Heavy Gauss rifle and 1 LRM-15, each variant in the game is constructed to operate differently. Each mech and tank comes with 6-8 variants that do different jobs all have a strength and a weakness which is why in most games the variant deployment of units is very vast because there is no min max builds in the game.

You don't see the irony in your post?

You have a game where there was complete freedom in customization (far more than the restrictions in MWO), so people made a lot of variants, and then you stopped creating more custom variants. That's not different from MWO at all. The only difference here is that in MWO, even bad variants can be played, because you might be able to customize them in a creative way. While in MW:LL, bad variants just don't get played, because you can't change anything.

I personally like MW:LL, and would have loved to see it grow, but no one in their right mind should ever think that being restricted to only a handful of variants, especially ones that aren't always well designed, is better than giving players some freedom in building their mechs.

Honestly, MWO's mechbay is restricted compared to some of the ideas out there, or ones that I thought of. I wanted proper TT customization, which would put MWO's to shame.

Well you kinda have to way up balance with freedom, the more freedom you give the harder and harder it becomes to balance to a point where even the largest balance change will not be enough, So when you get enough time and been around long enough like myself that is in tier 1 you only see a handful of mechs with the same laser vomit builds because every thing else is more or less redundant, The min max creates a even more stale state of gameplay then some restrictive creation.

So you way it up, to much freedom is not good and to little freedom is not good, in sense what is needed is limited customizing to keep each variant of each mech in its role it was built for. Keeping some of the negative things about a mech that were the result of its building as a means of a weakness, like for example front loading armor is just stupid, engine grading virtually never happened due to technical problems, I could see something like scaled points where if your mech hand a medium laser in the left arm you could mount anything from a small , small pulse, medium laser or medium pulse. you could mount a larger weapon but then you run into issues where the weapon may not perform well, or may not deal enough damage as the variant was not configured to fire that high level of energy.

MWLL mech lab was something I would take over MWO stick any sized weapon any where idea where it had slots, light , medium , heavy and assault it made more sense to have it like that.

Some of the bad variants in MWLL are a result of last min cobbling together before the shut down happened, I know some of the devs wanted more time but that was time some one was not willing to give them.

So really to sum it up, If you have to much freedom things become stale and redundant, if you have to little the same thing happens but not to the same degree, there needs to be a line or balance vs freedom. I am one of those guys who loves stock games and prefer then over the casual drops as all I see is the same builds on the same few mechs over and over again and I am just like " I didn't come here for this."

If people don't like MWLL that is fine but there also be those who dislike MWO system and that be ok they are two different games, Hell MWLL should not even be called Mechwarrior its more battle tech then any thing else as it goes int full scale warfare in the universe.

You rock. I might have to reinstall it when I get home. I loved playing around on the training servers. Would be awesome if I could actually play some of you all. Hopefully this patch gets enough attention to create a big buzz.
