Not to be confused as "what mechs are "best", as one can enjoy mechs that are not "Meta-approved".

For me, I have found things changing. For instance, I used to LOVE the Victor. The ground agility nerfs leave me hating to even touch it.

So ATM, mine is hands down the Griffin. Does not have quite as good of hard points as the Shadowhawk, or hitboxes, but is close. But it's agility? Off the charts, 130º twist before you unlock it, great arm reflex and 7 JJ. And the FoV? Yeah, pretty much tops. It's a flanker's dream, and can carry a great blend of energy and missiles.

When they first came out, I preferred the balanced hardpoints of the GRF-3M, but have become a died in the wool fan of the classic, GRF-1N, so much that I own 2. One optimized for my playstyle ( il Fianchetto ) and one that I run for Stock Mech matches (also use my GRF-1S for that a fair bit). I don't have the best average damage of my mechs with it, only hovering about 350 avg match damage. But I am running a 3.4 W/L and 3.6 KDr with it. The W/L in particular means a lot to me.

And.....it is simply bloody gorgeous to my mind, with a WWII Bomber aesthetic and simplicity. Please PGI, don't screw up the Hero version!!!!!!

So what is your "mech of choice"?

(Honorable mentions to the ON1-VA and yes, Summoner-Prime. Not because the Summoner is amazing. It has just always been my favorite clan mech)

Currently, a 4 CERML, SRM24 Timber Wolf S. Previously, a AL(A)RM45 Orion V. Both can be very decisive in PUG games.

As of right now, probably the Heavy Metal. It's a pink jumping assault that plays rock music when you kill something. It's too much fun. Also I love the look of the head on the highlander, it's looks like a radio tower or something.

Hopefully enough time with the clans give me something else to love.

The Orion never gets enough love. I run mine with the "dreaded" XL, and still find it plenty tough, as long as I don't Leroy Jenkins. 4x aSRM4 and an AC10, with a 340xl makes one heck of a wrecking ball. Might have to try it on the Summoner, thought he lack of FLD AC hurts it for the role.

Biggest thing people don't seem to put together, the DoT nature of most Clan Weapons goes a long way to gimping their mobility advantage. Still, perhaps a UAC10, 4x SRM4.

My favorite is the Dragon, which is probably the reason I barely play anymore. I just like the idea of it. Too bad it's condemned to be pretty much the least effective mech in the game.

Before the Clans, it was the Shadow Hawk 2K...which is ironic, because I actually expected it to not turn out that great because of torso only lasers. I guess my error was that I assumed it would handle like an assault mech with torso only lasers (like the Buttmaster), but its greater agility makes them very usable.

Now that the Clans are here, I'm going to derp around with them for a while to see if I change my mind.

Gotta admit, the Timberwolf Prime with its stock loadout(minus the medpulse laser) is now pretty close, before this game it was always my favorite, even if its not the best. Don't know why, but it is. Never cared about really changing the loadout. Maybe its nostalgia.

Its a toss up between:

Timber Wolf with a UAC10, 4 SSRM4s, 2 Medium Lasers.

JagerMech:
Buzzsaw: 3 UAC5s, 2 Medium lasers.
BuckshotJager: 2 LBX10, 4 Machine Guns, 2 Medium lasers.

I imagine though, once I can get a Stormcrow its going to be one of my favorites. The thing is so ugly and awkward, but even when I see them losing a fight they're giving something one hell of a bloody nose. Can't wait to have one.

Mine would probably have to be the Shadowhawk and pretty much all of its variants, they're just so versatile with the weapons and they go fast enough if I cram in a big enough engine, and they have jumpjets too so I don't feel worthless when I come across a small ledge like in other comparable mechs such as the Trebuchet. I also generally like laser hardpoints on the arms the most, and other than the 2K that fits every variant, so they're pretty much perfect for me.

I still love my Misery with AC20, 4 ML, 1 LPL, and 1 SRM-6. It's still hands down the best brawler I've had the pleasure of using.

My list of favorites:

1.) Misery
2.) Timberwolf (still finding favorite builds)
3.) Dire Wolf (much better after speed tweak, but still could use a little more balanced CT)
4.) Jester (awesome fast flanker)
5.) Orion (wonderful brawlers with STD engines)

Favorite mechs?

Clan Summoner, but only because of nostalgia. For gameplay, Stormcrow. Fast, agile and moves like a Raven with an attitude.

IS? Griffin, and Thunderbolt. But, I have to give a /nod to my Protector, hell of a fun mech.

Yeah I've ran the "Very Angry" Orion too; SRM16, AC10, lasers and a big engine. As a line breaker it's actually very good. I just prefer the ALARM45 Orion because it's so much more decisive in PUG games -- I do a lot more good flaying the enemy with it, then beating some poor schmuck down with a Very Angry Orion.

Personally I'm not sure why Clan Heavies like to dance at range. DOT weaponry negates the mobility advantage, as you said. I prefer to see the mobility as being able to bring weapons into play at very close ranges, where the DOT and sanding nature of the weapons doesn't mean so much. At <50m, I don't need to aim that much with SRM24s, and my Lasers are just going to burn into that torso no matter how you want to dodge.

Currently, my AC20/srm18 Timberwolf brawler. Its less effective than my MetaWolf, but its so much fun to play. Agile, fast, UAC20 is oodles of fun up close and personal, and SRM's are finally effective again too.

Other notables - Griffon (love the cockpit, agility), Nova (Seriously, ALL THE LAZORS) AND Stormcrow (If it could jump. I'd never play another mech)

Well, it's a pretty close match between the Nova and the BanShee.

Both move at similar speeds, with a 400XL in the BanShee, and both mount lots of lasers.

Very few things before the Clans matched the burst damage of the Banshee build in question, the WubShee. 400XL, 23 DHS, 7 MPLs and 1 LPL.

That's over 100 damage in under 5 seconds. Now that SRMs work, it's no longer the best brawler, but with the large shield arms, and "fast" at 75, it's still very nasty.

As for the Nova, I'm a fan of 6 ERMLs and 6 ERSLs+either 4 MGs or 2 AMS, although 2 ERLLs and 11 ERSLs works pretty nicely as well, for a tad longer reach, and 65 potential close range damage.

But the Nova just doesn't have the armor, or the satisfying WubWubWub.
