So, apparently the cPulse lasers were buffed, and the ERSL nerfed to 4 damage with a 20M range buff.

LB spread decreased for smaller cannons, thankfully.



Clan LB2 spread set to 0.45, down from 1.3

Clan LB5 spread to 0.85, down from 1.3

Clan LB2, AC2, UAC2 and IS AC2 cooldown set to 0.72 down from 0.8
Clan ER Small Laser damage reduced from 5.0 to 4.0
Clan ER Small Laser range increased from 180m/360m to 200m/400m
Clan Small Pulse Laser damage increased from 3.4 to 4.4
Clan Medium Pulse Laser damage increase from 7.0 to 7.4
Clan Medium Pulse Laser heat increased from 5.0 to 5.5
Clan Medium Pulse Laser duration reduced from 1.1 to 0.9

Well, the small pulse now has a very small reason to be taken over the ERSL, but twice the tonnage for a 25% burn reduction and only 4 more damage still seems poor. Only the Med Pulse got a burn decrease, and the large didn't get touched.


I'm not sure that'll be enough, but should be nice to try the Med Pulse.

Clan ER Smalls are now blatantly inferior to Clan ER Mediums, unless you somehow have only 0.5 tons left over and don't want any more ammo. Using more than 1 CERSL is now pointless.

Maths:

2x CERSL:
  • 1 ton
  • 200m range
  • 8 damage
  • 4 heat
1x CERML:
  • 1 ton
  • 450m range
  • 7 damage
  • 5 heat
The Nerfinator has claimed another life, and now the CERSL has suffered the same fate as the Inner Sphere Small Laser.


Seriously, Paul, the weapon was reasonably balanced before. A pair of them gave a noticeably higher punch than 1 CERML, but you had the run the risk of getting into very short range to reap that higher damage (fights don't magically start at 180m, folks). But now, only a dumbass would ever use a CERSL after the patch.

At the very least its nice to see some relatively quick changes to issues that have been brought up. The change to C-ERSmall lasers is good. At 0.5 tons it was a very nice option for an (almost) equivalent to the IS Medium Laser...

I still think that paul hates pulse lasers... those changes will not be enough. Why not make them just plain better? They are heavier, tons that would go straight into heatsinks so they are hotter, even with the same base heat. And shorter range on top of it, so why not make them (really) better?

The large pulse lasers really need a buff, their burn time is far too long. There isn't any point in using them beyond the funky sound they make.

You mean 2xCERSL is worse in ONE respect than 1CERML? Range. It still has damage and heat advantages. Surely that's what you meant.

The heat and damage advantages are both only 1 point now, which is basically unnoticeable. The range boost of 250 meters, however, is extremely noticeable for the CERML.

I think you're overstating the case, FupDup. 2 CERSLs still have a significant DPS advantage once you're in range. And they're now more fairly balanced against IS MLs.

The damage reduction for the CERSLs combined with the damage increase for CSPLs now makes the CSPLs a more viable option.

More damage for less heat, at the cost of range. Seems reasonable enough. Also has a shorter burn duration.

The changes make the SPL something that's not DOA either, as the regular ERSL was superior in every way.

Besides, MLs are the bread and butter of Battletech. Seems reasonable they should be in MWO.

Large Pulse Laser needed attention so badly. I am very surprised they didn't get a tweak to make them viable.

DPS is largely meaningless in this game, especially when you consider that the beam duration just spreads it out anyways. The ability to damage enemies from afar is far more useful than a small DPS nudge.

Also, balancing them against IS MLs is a bit shortsighted, because of the inherit weaknesses of the platform carrying Clan weapons. Clan weapons should only be individually balanced against other Clan weapons. The factions don't need to have identical weapon stats on a spreadsheet, because of the customization differences.

Except that's it's not "in every respect"... I'm not going to get into a debate over weather it's balanced or not as none of us have had the chance to test it yet, however please don't just blatantly disregard the words within your own post...

You said "in every respect" yet 2x CERS does 1 more point of damage for 1 less heat with a faster burn time AND a shorter cool down... Sure, it's closer range and takes two energy hard points but a single cERM is not better than 2x cERS "in every respect"....

I'm trying to stay impartial and use some logical reasoning to figure out why the change was made. While I know that boating many ERSmalls is Win in a box when you get into range, my guess would be with inclusion of Targeting Computers they predict ERSmalls will be the 'Go-To" weapon for clans.

I like the changes to the medium pulse, but will have to try them first before making a decision.

Large Pulses still do need to be tweaked and I see no inclusion of any extra pods on the Summoner, that is disappointing.

The damage is only +1, and the heat is only -1. The duration is fine for the CERML. 250m optimal range boost trumps the tiny +/-1 stat changes.

They already are a highly common and effective weapon on IS battlemechs. I don't see how nerfing a Clan-only weapon somehow helps an Inner Sphere weapon that can't even be used on those Clan mechs.

In most cases that's what people do. I didn't change my AC2 builds a month ago and I don't intend on changing my CERSL builds either. People still die when I shoot them, it's crazy.
