"A small shelf with books with such titles as 'How to pilot a mech for dummies', 'Fisher Price - My first mech owners manual', 'So you think you are a mech pilot - A tale of delusion', '101 Ways to pi mp out a mech' and other such classics." - quote from Simbach pg. 40
ALSO mentioned by Geist Null on pg. 47 and Marson Wells on pg. 34.
I second the nihonto (wakizashi, etc.) or other side-arm idea. I second the passive-aggressive techie notes idea. I second the page 79 "super-out-of-date inspection sticker" idea. I support the old-school navigational tools idea. I also support the mini-fan idea, the dog tags idea, the our-own-image picture idea, and the AI introduction start-up voice idea (like in MW2).
I had the idea of having a live animal in the cockpit, like a lizard or a gecko (suitably in-universe, of course. Mechwarrior RPG Sourcebooks have creature lists in them). Some people mentioned cats or birds, but... anyway, considering how distracting and hard to animate that would be, I decided against it.
I'd like some kind of religious artifacts in my cockpit, personally. Kind of a thematic thing I want to have going with my pilot. Half-burned black and white candles, rosary, hanging Iron Cross, that kind of thing. I understand that might not be possible... but religion is an important part of Mechwarrior. I can't think of any reason why any religion should feel insulted or minimized by being included as selectable items here. I know a lot of people would want a smiling buddha statue or a resting buddha statue (wait, no, is that budhai? I don't remember how it goes). It could even become a positive selling point for the game. I know you're adults here, and no-one can really see inside other people's cockpits except on Youtube videos.

I have a 'job' for all of you. I need you to reply to this with stuff you'd like to see in your 'Mechs cockpit - as in 'items' like Fuzzy Dice, Hula Girl, etc. I'm collecting these as an informal study.
So please, answer away!

Taunts. Meaning, unique mech animations that prevent user input for a few seconds, that can be performed when you want to rub in a good performance/celebrate. In the style of TF2, it could be a little dance or something - people are already inventing their own little ones by waggling Cat ears and arm-gesturing with Dragons.
This would lead to increased player interaction with opponents and teammates, and would be relatively low-cost to implement.
Provided you used a limited, fixed, third-person perspective for us to witness the taunts, it increases the player's attachment with his own chassis by allowing him to actually see it(further encouraging us to purchase cosmetics/paintjobs), and gives players an opportunity to actually see their own 'badassery' without significantly affecting gameplay. It would allow you to preserve the sim quality of gameplay while satisfying a lot of people who simply want to see how cool their mech looks perched/strutting on a hill in River City.

Imagine once the camo changes are allowed your units colors on all mechs with your units logo on a leg and a personal logo/image on the other leg and a personal cockpit pic. I would think the game could handle the small file sizes since ArmA 2 can handle 64 players. This would only be 48 images for 8 vs 8 game.

P.S. I'm totally serious, I'd be totally hilarious to emote that dance over an enemies fallen Mech.
