thats what I am telling the players who are looking for people to do the challenge with. I told them to drop in on channels and just play with people. Even if they have no mic, they cans till find many players and just have a good time.

There are probably going to be solo and group challenges. Also different kinds with different parameters.

Also I would bet very few people can not use TeamSpeak. I know of just one I can think of. And that is some one whos parents will not let him put it on the computer. Not saying there are not other reasons. But probably just a very very small percentage of people that cant use TeamSpeak.

With added steps....
Step 1: Here is the adress for downloading teamspeak 3 http://www.teamspeak...?page=downloads
Step 2: Once you fire it up you will tabs along the top of the program. Click on self and add your pilot name.
Step 3: (if you use a mic) Next click setting tab then go down to options to add a hotkey for the mic if you use one. You can set the mic to be in use all the time (not reccomended) or use a push to talk function. I happen to use left control so my mic is only hot when I want it to be. You do not have to have a headset or mic to use it either. You can listen in and chat via TS or in game.
Step 4: Click the bookmarks tab, then click manage books marks. In adress put in na1.mech-connect.net, for the label I put Comstar North America. You can also set your nickname here as well. Click apply, then ok.
Step 5: Now when you hover or click bookmarks tab you will see Comstar Server, just click it to connect. You will start in the entryway where no one can use voice chat. Scroll down and see the dropships, click and join one

I'm trying to think of a scenario where one couldn't get on TS, not use their mic and just listen in.
Maybe a suspicious wife? Playing at work and the headset would give it away?

Advantages:
None.
Disadvantages:
Hearing a bunch of dumbasses yelling and verbally high-fiving and the like.
Being distracted by idiots calling out targets and the like.
Becoming disgusted with your fellow players so much so that you vow to PUG forever.
If you're a girl, probably getting hit on by a bunch of slimy greasebags.
Idiots interrupting your jams/favorite game music.
Takes up hardrive space.
Consumes bandwidth.
Puts deaf and/or blind players at a disadvantage versus those who can hear and see.
Plus, there are better VOIP services. Please stop shoving Teamspeak down everyone's throats.

there should be a UI, to communicate in game on a wider level than in matches, if your planning on releasing content that requires people to exclusively interact with each other

But if that has been your experience on TS I'm sorry for you. Perhaps you just haven't been lucky in finding a group of people who are of a similar personality as yourself. It doesn't mean EVERYONE on TS is the same as those you have ran across.
As for only being a distraction, I'm not sure I would call clear communication and teamwork a distraction but if that is your opinion, then I can respect that.
Personally I find grouping up with people on TS makes the game more fun to play, increases the chance of winning (which increases the fun factor again) and I run the risk of actually making some new friends.
