Hm. Entirely reasonable approach to begin resolving issues of the past and moving forward. Sounds like they are listening, refreshing. Hopeful again.

Puts on Evil Hat;

I would of asked for a $50 bond for 6months to sort the wheat from the chaff.

So they can come back if they promised to be constructive (that being the whole point) the $50 is to make sure they really want to come back and not just troll.

If they make it to 6months and not re-banned they get their $50 back but if they don't then they loose their bucks and it covers the cost of unbanning/re-banning them.

Smart move.

Might I suggest, further, not even ever trying to go outside your own forums so far as your moderation attempts go? It's a bit orwellian and bound to backfire.

Police your forums, your facebook, your twitter; by all means. Let /r/HPGOutreach or whatever be the little hotbed of contention and angryposting it is. You can't stop them, so don't try.

Lead by example and the @#$%posting will subside to the usual easily-ignored murmur present for other gaming communities.

Why such complex procedures? they will just ban them again if needed.

This is a reasonable man.

Please do not compliment me. It will damage my status amongst my fellow "pitchfork and tar" crowd and they may turn on me.

Seriously though, IF Russ and PGI make a long-lasting and concerted effort to communicate more effectively AND stick it out, I'm willing to self-moderate for awhile too.

I know one poster who was banned for asking about staff relocations. He didn't make any accusation, he did so in an appropriate thread (the thread announcing a new project), and was banned because asking what PGI does with its development assets in a public forum is apparently criticism.

Can you please forward this post or Pilot name to me?

Thanks!

and then we get to see how many of the "reasonable opposition" remain reasonable, if certain fanboi favorites continue to prove a detriment to the community and again have to be removed.

I ain't saying the banhammer might not have nailed some "innocents" (since IDK who all were banned) but I do know it also was withheld from some very deserving parties for quite some time.

Whether or not they can comport themselves in a way constructive and beneficial for the long haul, I cannot comment on, but should they resume their former course, it is, as you say, a simple fix.

I'm not even confident they'll be able to "comport".

Posts like this are nice. However, I've seen behavior like this from PGI just about every time the community has gotten all torch and pitchforky. Hopefully this time is different, but I'm not going to get over excited about the dev team's new desire to communicate.

As a side note, people being banned for things said on third party websites is ridiculous. The internet is the internet, trying to police it can only have negative consequences. Tend to your own backyard, and leave the neighbors hedges alone.

or do you mean "conform"

There remains a huge gap between being able to ask questions that got players banned & redacted

I can count over 30 memes Niko has redacted over my teasing PGI over their horrible communication skills and teasing about implementation failures. redacts are just another form of censoring in my view.

Banning players for asking questions and making personal comments on Facebook, and ANY other media outlet is BULLYING plain and simple

Now Russ has a lot to think about as he gives the forum moderators, and his staff instructions on their conduct and whether to censor or bully

allowing Banned players to return is interesting; but that is not the issue, nor is the conduct of basic troll. those can be singled out quickly.

But if you are suggesting that their return is based on their conduct fine, but IF we return to not allowing member to ask brutally honest questions... AND we have to "conform" to what PGI deems acceptable communications on their terms?

well, then nothing has improved and this will all be another ammo shell that can be lobbed.
