Regarding Memory Allocation Errors

Hey everyone,

Apologies for the delay on this. Right now we’re trying to compile as much information as we can regarding the persistence of the Memory Allocation Error. If anyone is still experiencing this problem, please submit a support ticket to support@mwomercs.com with the heading “Memory Allocation Error”.

Please attach the results of a DirectX Diagnostic to the e-mail, along with a copy of the Omicron.log file located in your \MechWarrior Online root folder. Please also provide any further details you can about the circumstances under which the error occurred, such as how often it occurs, and any workarounds or fixes you may have attempted.

How to obtain and attach a DxDiag
- Press Windows Key + R
- Type DxDiag
- Click Save All Information. If prompted about WHQL drivers, click no.
- If the Save All Information button is not present, simply click on Run (32/64 bit)DxDiag. The Save All Information button will appear after the diagnostic.
- Log file location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Bin32\PatcherLogs
- Attach the file to your support ticket e-mail. Please do not copy/paste the contents in the body of your message as it will get truncated.

Email sent, thanks for your hard work.

About the circumstances, it regularly happens after 2-4 games, especially if the map being loaded is one of the large ones: crimson, terra therma, alpine. It almost always happen on map load but can happen even while playing with a much lower chance, like 10%.

The worst case is crimson, sometimes the problem happens even if crimson is the first map played after launching the game, rejoining has the same effect: crash on load. This does not always happen, it is like it depends on the current drop setup (involved mechs, camos, etc).

I'm glad to hear its getting attention. It is something I suffer from quite frequently.

I'll have to see about sending something in.

My personal experience is pretty similar to the above though. It's been pretty frustrating since in the last few months finding a rhythm has been nearly impossible. I've gone nearly an hour without a hint of a crash but I've also crashed first match back or multiple times during a single match.

Terra Therma is certainly a big culprit in my experience, along with the other maps mentioned but I think I must have crashed at least once on all of them.

Sometimes, they aren't fatal. I've taken to playing in a full window so I can move them aside and keep fighting, sometimes right until the end of the match. It cannot get back to mechlab though, so one way or another I have to restart the client.

Hello! My experience is the same as EvilCow, but the most error go to the TerraTerma map. The different is, after I rejoined, I can play until the end of the game. This error never happend before the implementation of UI 2.0.

I don't know what you've done recently but you made it worse.
I used to be able to move the error message to the side of the screen and finish the match most of the time, but now every Memory allocation error message comes with a free CTD :(

It got worse, now Crimson is no more playable for me, I get the error each single time and yes, I ran the repair tool, I cleared the cache and everything else run at least one time.

Playing MWO is so frustrating now. If it wasn't for the weekend challenge i wouldn't be playing at all :(

I can add Mining Collective to the list of unplayable maps now due to this error...
and I don't even remember the last time I saw what either River City looked like.

Upgrading to a 64 bit OS and replacing my RAM has stopped ALL MEMORY LEAK ISSUES!

Not sure if this will apply to everyone but it seems that anyone who is still running a 32 bit OS will have this issues.

Minimum specs are just that....THE BARE MINIMUM and this game barely gets by on those.

No, that just hides the problem, now there are also reports of 64bits systems affected.

Hey everyone,

Apologies for the delayed response since the call was put out back in the OP.

Thanks in part to all the players who submitted tickets under the guidelines provided, we've been able to compile a great deal of information on this problem and have been working on potential resolutions for it. We've got a number of fixes in the pipeline that need to go through proper testing before we can start rolling them out, but we hope to have them confirmed and ready to go soon.

Some insight into occurrences of the problem: the performance demands of MWO can fluctuate match-to-match depending on factors such as the map in which a match is taking place; the different models of 'Mechs in play; the loadouts of each 'Mech in play; your specific quality settings; and so forth. These variations in the resource demands are why you might be able to run a match without issue in one session yet experience issues in another with no change in your own configuration or to background applications.

The majority of players being affected by this are running an amount of physical RAM below the 4GB minimum specifications. Furthermore, when a large amount of activity is taking place on-screen under memory-intensive scenarios, machines running with a base level of 4GB physical RAM under a 32-bit OS are also much more prone to receiving the error. A much smaller contingent of players are experiencing similar memory issues under more compatible architecture.
Our fixes are intended to optimize memory handling under these situations.

I'll be responding to all the tickets submitted regarding this issue very soon with similar information, catered more toward specific player configurations, and I'll be keeping this thread updated as more information becomes available.

This begs the question, when are we going to see 64bit executables? Yes, I understand that 64bit executables would, primarily, only help with memory allocation, and that MWO is highly threaded and this may allow for MWO to work with more physical memory...and running under a 64bit OS gives MWO room from other applications, making the 32bit limits an application problem and not an OS problem.

Are there no situations underwhich 64bit executables would help? Are pieces of MWO already 64bit?

I mean, I was running around Teratherma and I cranked up full settings, and memory usage stayed around 1800mb, which, is respectable, but I don't know if that includes all of the resources that MWO was using or just the resources handled by specific threads or if windows wasn't including swap.

I've sent in multiple emails to support, but the only answer I get back is that my computer should not even be able to run this game. Fortunately for me, the only problems I have are on the following three maps, in order from most to least troublesome: Terra Therma, Alpine, and Crimson Strait. The game will kick me every so often, as it did last night several times, which is highly unusual, but it does happen; otherwise, the game runs like... vulgar analogy averted... the game runs very well for me. For support to tell me I shouldn't be able to run this game, at all, I have come to learn is pretty short-sighted.

I do hope and pray you get this fixed, but I also hope and pray you do not go to a 64-bit version to replace the 32-bit, otherwise I will not be able to return to play for, likely, another full year. I've had a very rough go of it over the past half-decade and, though I'm now in a position where I'm starting to make money, again, it's still going to be some time before I'll be able to replace the equipment we have.

I'm hoping this was the error referred to in today's patch where it mentioned "fixed memory corruption issue"?
I guess I'll have to find out when I get home tonight and try to run a few games.

As per the latest Patch Notes, some progress has been made in reducing the occurrence of memory errors. It remains to be seen just how effective these fixes will be for the entire range of issues being experienced under certain configurations, so this thread will remain pinned and open until more information can be compiled from the users most commonly affected by the memory issues.

Please feel free to update this thread with any changes you see in your own client, after running a few matches under the latest patch.

Hi,

The latest patch did not fix the allocation error, at least, not in my case. I just had the usual crash while loading crimson, it was the first launch after booting up the game, no other screens visited, just launched using the default mech to there should not be any memory leak causing this.

Note that, unlike crimson and terra therma, the new map (The Mining Collective) never crashes, the problem is apparently more related to the map size than on the number of objects present.

As I expressed earlier in this thread, the three maps this happens on for me are, in order from most to least often, is Terra Therma, Alpine, and Crimson Strait. Though I played twelve or so games, last night, I dropped into Alpine one time, and that one time I had an MAE. I will continue to monitor MAEs, but at this point, I would say they have not, yet, been fixed, entirely.
