I voted for the Grasshopper. I don't think this 'mech has been represented in many MechWarrior games (I think it was in MW2 Mercenaries).

The Black Knight had its turn to shine in MW4 Black Knight and Mercenaries games, even though it was misrepresented as an omnimech with the presence of omni slots.

But I hope we see both of these chassis in-game in the future :)

Well circling back to this after looking offer the TROs a time or two, this is a very hard choice.

Part of what makes it difficult is aside from the missile mount in the head, they both have near identical hard point options both being focused on energy which means both are going to be very hot mechs and a total bee-itch to to keep cool. However I think the Black Knight actually has the most going for it. Here is why.

1 - 75 tons is the sweet spot in Battletech. Typically this weight class offers the greatest amount of free weight for weapons and equipment comparative to speed of any weight class so it is hard to argue with any 75 ton options.

2 - Larger stock engine which means that the Black Knight will end up being able to mount a larger max engine than the Grasshopper. This could mean anything from great speed to being able to add another DHS to the engine depending on how large you can go. Also larger engine means more agility.

3 - More armor. A 75 tonner will allow more armor than a 70 tonner.

4 - Extra tonnage means more DHS to help cool all those energy weapons.

Now the Grasshopper does allow for JJs but in their current state I am not sure how useful JJs are also as I mentioned, these mechs are going to run hot which means devoting 4 tons to JJs might not be all that good of an option if you want to keep things cool and if your not going to mount JJs, you might as well just go with the Black Knight.

Therefore Black Knight it is.

Looking at both mechs I immediately thought the following...

Grasshopper = Heavier Quickdraw with possibly better hitboxes. Heavier tonnage by 10t

Black Knight = Energy only thunderbolt, while not being as easy to hit as a barn. Possible that they might put a quirk on it to increase its Shield arm armor. heavier tonnage by 10t

Now considering JJ changes on oct 7th or the near future, Grasshopper might be nice but probably very similar to Quickdraw in most respects (with either more armor or better total armament). Quickdraw sucks at brawl, but this mech might do fine in it with an SRM for screenshake while running around.

I'd be mildly amused if the Grasshopper turned out smaller than the Quickdraw.

And at the same time livid.

However, it's going to have a hard time being much bigger without being as big as the Victor...

While we're on the subject though, is there any 75 tonner WITH jumpjets in the Battletech universe?

Edit 1: And by 75 tonner I'm talking strictly IS mechs since they're all I pilot. The game feels more rewarding to me killing enemies in my IS mechs as opposed to the clan trials I've used, but even back in the day clan mechs just leave me with a stale taste in my mouth.

Not until TRO 3055.

Really both can be launched. But really need more maps. Jungle. Space. And more reactive elements on maps.

I think the black knight is a great mech, I want to see what Alex does with it. But the grasshopper has not been in a MW title. so I must vote for it.

On the subject of trying to diversify the BK variants, it would be a difficult task to be sure but not impossible. One idea might be to use the quirk system differently on each variant.

Possible Example:
BL-6-KNT: Increased engine cap to whatever (400?), increased agility (i.e. torso twist radius)
BL-6b-KNT: +X% increased heat dissipation and/or -Y% energy weapon heat
BL-7-KNT-L: Increased Large Laser range and/or damage and/or reduced cooldown time

Black Knight will need some hard point inflation, individuality quirks, or something else as all the hardpoints of the 4 black knights we'll have access too are almost the same build.

All 4 timeline appropriate Black Knights have the following hardpoints:
2E RT, 2E LT, 2E RA, 1E LA, 1E Head
Always a small laser in the head, 4 Medium lasers spread throughout the sections, 2 Large Lasers in the side torsos, and varying types of Large laser or PPC in the right arm.

Grasshopper has competition with the Cataphract 3D for being a 70 ton jumpjetting energy mech. I would assume the Grasshopper will get some hard point inflation though. Sadly the Grasshopper's missile hardpoints are in the Head.

Minimum hardpoints for each Grasshopper:
5H: 1E CT, 1E RT, 1E LT, 1E RA, 1E LA, 1M Head
5N: 2E RT, 1E LT, 1E RA, 1E LA, 1E Head
5J: 1E CT, 1 AMS RT, 1E RA, 1E LA, 1M Head
5H and 5J both have a CT slot, so they will always be able to attack stuff, the 5N lacks this by putting one of the energy hardpoints in the RT, but it does replace the missile hardpoint in the head with energy, so that might be good for people who want that extra medium laser.

When it comes to the 5J, while AMS is nice, most IS mechs get AMS, so either it gets double AMS or positive quirks, or get energy hardpoint inflation in it's arms to compete with the other 2 Variants.

While the only reason why I like the Black Knight is because of it's name, and because it has an expansion pack named after it for Mechwarrior 4 (which was rather disappointing when I got it so no real nostalgia for me.). It will probably look nice if it gets in though.
The Grasshopper is very interesting to me, I do like that CT energy weapon, and it has jumpjets. While I know the Black Knight will look good, I'm curious to see Alex's look on the Grasshoper. It's also lesser known, which will lead to another mech that people will remember MWO for.

Whatever the case, they will both be hot-running energy boats and they will serve an in-between for the Jester and Battlemaster for those who want all energy stuff.
I voted for the Grasshopper because I want to see mechs we haven't seen before, and the Jumpjets + CT laser makes it more unique.

The Grasshopper. Pretty sure the Black Knight was supposed to be a rare 'mech by the time of the Clan Invasion, so it would be funny as hell to see hordes of it in MWO haha.

What a hard choice. I tend to not care for JJ's on heavies so I would normally vote Black Knight. It is a fine laser boat...... but then again I would like to see the Grasshopper make it's way into a MW game...

I gotta go with the grasshopper for the reason that it would offer the greatest diversity of the two mechs. I do like that BK though.

It was the face for one of Mech4's xpacs.

It would be rather like expecting the Timberwolf to lose against the Rakshasa

I would have voted for the Rakshasa just because it needs a facelift that badly. And it has an undeservedly bad reputation because it is an IS clone of the Timber Wolf.
