Well, I never followed the Sheeple to run the Zombie Cent either. Always used XLs, too.
My understanding waaaay back when was that the durability matched the reality I used the Zombie Cent. Of course, tactics evolved and it changed to straight legging.
With XL, the bare minimum speed to make the most of it started @ 300XL, because anything lower would have "easier access" to hitting the side torso (ideally, the Left Missile Torso) to disable the majority of the playload. With the current game, I've still managed to side-core XL Cents because of it (plus, the occasional gamble on a weakened side core of a Wang, preferably on the Right Torso).
Personally, there's nothing wrong with the Cent-D with a large XL engine.

They twist nice enough, with good enough hitboxes, seems a waste not to front load as much damage at the front of the match...instead of just wandering around for 10 minutes going Pew Pew in a 2x ML stick.
I think that has to do with the "mentality" that something with 2 med lasers won't do anything... but "left to their own devices", the damage adds up over time. I guess it depends on how one values the threat of 2 med lasers and a "spotter" for all intents and purposes at that point.

If I can lay down 5-600 damage in the first 5 minutes of the match, even if I die, it usually does more to help the team win then playing down 600 damage but needing the full 15 to get there. Just my experience. But the quicker you lay out pain on the opfor, the faster their CLG stacks, and then they crumble.
That's pretty accurate, unless the damage is solely Streak or LRM based (SRMs, particularly ASRMs punch nice bigger holes). I think the greater threat during an endgame scenario is a healthy Centurion that can effectively brawl. Cleanup on Isle Find!

I get Zombie Builds for the KDr crowd though. They largely fall in with the 2 ERLL Ravens....useful if all you care about is your individual stats....questionable for helping the team actually win.

I've really looked at Zombie builds as that... just mostly on a durability standpoint. That's pretty much it. 2 ERLL Ravens are easily challenged with natural Light builds that force them to flee and not be able to sustain that kind of firepower.
Weapon loadouts and their counters... if only that wasn't a Lostech aspect of the "Thinking Man's Shooter".
