Supply and Demand, even on items with an artificial supply restriction. It seem clear that PGI has performed an market analysis of this and found that if they lowered the price they would make less money, this is evidenced by all the Mech sales. If they made more during mechs sales than regular releases they would just lower the price on all mechs.
What they have found is that some mechs are crap, and don't sell well, which is why they are moving to mech bundles. That way they only need one winner in the package to make it appealing.
(Where it gets a little weird for me when they keep assaults as tier 1 mechs to promote the most expensive package deals, but enforce a 3/3/3/3 balance rule. They are essentially admitting that "yeah Assaults are OP, but that is why you buy them, so only 3 per match")
