The best idea i found here:
distribute the tonnage across the group rather than per player.
We are a unit, right?
Medium weight is 120 - 240?
example of a 4 pilot lance:
Scout pilot takes 4 lights - 4 Ravens/Adders - 140 tons,
Medium pilot: - 4 Ice Ferrets / Vindicator - 180 tons
Heavy pilot: - 4 Dragons / Mad Dogs - 240 tons
Assault pilot: - 4 Direwolfs/K-Crabs - 400 tons
Total: - 960 tons
medium weight of 240 is respected -
and players are happy.
Actually: An assault fan can bring in a Direwolf, a King Crab - and 2 Locusts.....
and players are unhappy.
I support the idea of distributing weight simply because I'm not going to use all of mine, but a couple of issues:
We don't want this in the hands of the match maker. You want to drop with 4 100 tonners you could be sitting in que for hours waiting for the sweet spot of the right planet you want to fight on, the right side of the fight, in the same faction, with enough shared weight to allow for your load, in competition with all the other assault pilots wanting the exact same thing.
On top of the individual component, the matchmaker would have to integrate that person with non-12 person groups who are already coordinating to distribute weight within their group, which practically gaurantees that person with 4 100 tonners will only ever find a match with 11 other solos hours later, which would promptly get stomped by some combination of teams on the other side.
This is true of all weight classes really, though most clear considering assault pilots.
The alternative is only allowing pre-made groups to use it internally, which privleges them over and above the advantages they already inherently have in the system as it is currently described.
Lastly, if the teams were put together in lobbies first, before mech selection, then they'd have to hash out weight distribution between the pre-mades and solos over chat, which sounds like 12 Angry Men with no enforcement mechanism, which would take a long time as well.
I want it. I don't know how to get it.
