Definitely a thing in multiple Eastern Mediterranean cultures. Greek and Turkish spring readily to mind. Not so sure about Italian, but I wouldn't be even a little surprised. Southern Italy does have a bit of more direct Greek history with some ancient Greek colonies.

Sleipner was not a name ever associated with Ariana though, and she is of African descent (at least partially), so even though we have black space samurai, it would seem a stretch without supporting fiction. The same would be said of William Cameron the other most famous fluff Cyclops' pilot, from the Command Lance of Wolf's Dragoons.

Yeah but it was my understanding they don't use actual mech names, which is why we have things like Top Dog etc. I think Sleipner is another little indication towards the Eridani Light Horse since in mythology Sleipnir was an 8 legged horse. The green camo is also the Eridani scheme.

Also, the Knight Chess piece is closer to the Insignia for Lindons Company, whose crest is.... a Chess Piece

My first thought when I saw that cockpit item wasn't Eridani Light Horse. I immediately thought "Hey, that looks more like the Lindon's Company insignia".



The whole horsehead chesspiece look, ya know.
