Melee weapons??

But seriously, I think it's the IS omni mech (probably Raptor).

EDIT: it's Clan's turn, though... does breaking the 200 km/h speed counts as a "never seen before" thing?

I assume though either

A. IS OMNI
or
B. Clan/IS Mech Chassis that is from the future. (3060ish era)

If Russ announces melee at Mechcon, what melee mechs would you want first? I choose the Berserker.

Hatchetman.
The OG melee mech.

Hatchetman, because it was the original melee mech in the TROs and deserves to be the first in MWO too if melee is added to the game.

Whatever it is, it's going to be horribly anti-climactic and disappointing.
I bloody guarantee it.

Hmmm.... the light mech is for January, so the next mech won't be the Fire Moth. Probably Clan. With something never done before? Oh snap, I think it will be the Mad Cat MK II. :o (first mech completely out of the timeline)

(I wish it was the Naga instead, but learned to tone down my expectations over the years...)

Well according to Russ on twitter, no Mk II at MECHCON. Unless he is lie ing and completely throwing us off. But probably not. (Sigh oh well, was hopeful but not entirely unexpected)

If it is a light, and if it is a Clan mech, then Fire Falcon would be a good guess. Though I suppose they might shoehorn another IIC in there with the Locust IIC. It wasn't the light mech that was going to do something new, I don't think. It was the other mech that was a new thing.

Consider that for the quad you lose weight to additional structure

we better have some very good benefits of having four legs - non shake when bombarded with LRMS / ACs?

and what would happen if we have one leg blown off, or two?

We have a new balance issue with those quads

In all honesty, without pulling another "technically" moment like Russ did with the Clan Heroes and his teasing on twitter that his announcement was some sort of great feature, there's very little things Russ can do that hasn't been seen in MWO before:

1. New equipment (Truly new equipment, like reactive/reflective/hardened armor).

2. Melee.

3. New Chassis Type (Quad or LAM . . . really only QUAD is feasible without adding a flight model to the game)

That's it. That's all he can do that hasn't been seen before in MWO. Now, if we get into the realms of "technically" then it opens up other options of things we "technically" don't have.

1. IS Omni (technically never done, but we already have omnimechs, so this one would be a sick joke, especially since most IS Omnimechs aren't all that amazing).

2. Outside Timeline, but using existing equipment tech (doubly sick joke).

3. New IS mech that flushes out IS LVL2 tech (this is a technically because we already have these weapon systems, they're just only available on the clan side . . . but they're "technically never done before").

25% reduced speed for the first leg gone, 50% or 40 KPH with the second (whichever is slowest), dead with the third. It isn't weight that is lost with the additional structure, it is crit slots. Basically, the only place you can mount anything, short of ammo or jump jets, are the torsos. Quads would probably rely on one big gun with a backup set of smaller guns approach to weapons design.

As for how they'd handle? Simple. No torso twist, but they gain the ability to sidestep and turn in place. Basically, typical FPS controls. Being all leg also means that, due to volumetric scaling, they'd be small for their weight. Smaller targets with high mounted guns. Sounds good, and compensated for with their limited crit space.

Quads are pretty easy to balance for MWO, especially if they get the inverse kinematics into the game (which would allow the quad to stay level on slopes):

1. Make screen shake virtually non-existent.

2. Adds strafing (can be activated/disabled with the "lock arm movement" button).

3. Turret-like torso-twisting for quads like the Tarantula or really good structure/armor quirks for ones like the Behemoth.

4. Great hill-climbing abilities.

Legging is also pretty easily handled:
4 Legs - Full Movement
3 Legs - 80% Movement
2 Legs - 60% Movement
1 Leg - 50% Movement or 40KPH, whichever is less

If my theory that they are trying to distance themselves from the need to keep a BT license is right, I expect that the something never done could be a unique mech of Alex's own imagining. They've already tested the waters with made up variants and no one has really seemed to mind that, so this would be a logical next step.

(disclaimer: I don't really believe my own conspiracy theory here, but I do think they might do a unique design eventually)

With SO MANY official mechs out there, I hope this will never happen.

Alex is an artist, and many like to create, not just re-image. While I love what he does with the re-imaging he is probably the only person who I would have faith to come up with something unique that would be cool and not an utter violation of the look and feel of the IP. If he rose a stink about wanting to create his own mech design, I for one would risk letting him do it, if I was PGI, and that's what it took to keep him happy.

Anyway, just hypothesizing about alternatives regarding Russ's "something we've never done before" comment.
