I like having leagues setup for only FPS and then another league setup for 3rd person and then the leagues were you can have either.
Either way is fine by me.. but the more options the better

If devs want to offer a valid and credible in-game solution for 3rd person view, there could be some kind of external camera attached to a sensor pole, or something like that. That camera should be visible game hardware, and thus, destroyable.

As an aside, I prefer to play in first person most of the time. I like being able to see my mech romp around the countryside / city sometimes, though.

EDIT: But third-person is still useful for screen shots, especially with a rotatable camera. Wouldn't use it for anything else.

Cannot explain how much this means to me. Thank you.
And for the record. As far as the "sneaking up behind an enemy" crowd goes. It has been stated (as has been mentioned) at several points in Battletech canon, that the "1st person cockpit view" that many of you seem so set on, is not what a Mechwarrior necessarily will see anyway, and that rather, a canon Mech cockpit has a viewscreen that compresses a 360 degree field of view onto a screen in front of the mechwarrior. In fact, some mechs are not designed with the traditional "glass-canopy" cockpit at all, and rely entirely on what appears on an internal viewscreen (if I remember correctly).
That being said, I wouldn't have a problem with a system that only renders enemy units visible if they would be visible in 1st person, or something like that, regardless of which perspective you choose to play in. Like I say, this isn't about an advantage over other players, this is about making a game that is playable by all fans of this game, and I know I for one, have been waiting a long time for this game to come along.

For clarification, 1PV is basically mapping what the in-game player sees directly onto your screen. The player's field of view takes up your entire screen (so things outside peripheral vision cannot be seen)
Placing a monitor in front of said player which provides him with views outside of what he can see is STILL first person (you're still viewing from the pilot's current location in the cockpit), you're just viewing camera feed content that is taking point of view from different locations on the Mech.
No, not confused really. Just pointing out that in the game canon, it would be unlikely that a mech could sneak up behind you anyway, since what is seen inside a cockpit isn't merely what you see "through the glass". Also that if memory serves, there are even some mech designs that are designed "sans canopy" meaning that the mechwarrior sits in an enclosed pod that has no canopy to look through what-so-ever, and relies entirely on an internal viewscreen. I bring this up merely to highlight that if we want to stick to 1PV strictly, in the name of "realism", that it wouldn't necessarily look how it seems to be imagined by many people in the thread anyway, according to multiple canon sources.
Therefore, why not have a 3rd person view? (not to mention what other posters had pointed out, that I hadn't though of until reading said posts, but the potential for sweet player made movies of Mech combat is something that I'd hate to lose access to).
