i personally prefer to see my battlemech wreaking havoc on the surrounding area in a third person view. but for balance purposes and all that i think it would be better to keep it first person only, so it doesn't bug me.

I personally love 3rd person, and yes, I was a hillhumping Nova Cat sniper. That being said I'm not super put off by the 1st person except the fact that chaining in Veng was annoying, and even more so in Mercs with the introduction of X-Pulse. From experience, being in 1st while getting chained made it almost impossible to even get a shot on target let alone effectively fight back. If this is all taken into a account, cool I'm all for it, if not I can just see it as a means for griefing which ruins the game for everyone.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me. I like having the option for both because it brings more game play.

I like having leagues setup for only FPS and then another league setup for 3rd person and then the leagues were you can have either.

Either way is fine by me.. but the more options the better

First person or it isn't MechWarrior...the last thing I want is some 3rd person MechAssault BS.

First person will be my preferred way to play. If they end up supporting a third-person commander mode or artillery mode that'd be fine with me too. But the immersion is a huge factor--shaking from big hits, seeing the cockpit crack from hits/near-misses, and most importantly, giving other people an idea of where you're looking because you torso-twist to look in that direction.

I'm totally cool with 1st person, although I'd really like a MechWarrior where I have the 360-degree holographic HUD.

Sorry it's first person all the way for me. I don't play it any other way.

First person all the way for me.

If devs want to offer a valid and credible in-game solution for 3rd person view, there could be some kind of external camera attached to a sensor pole, or something like that. That camera should be visible game hardware, and thus, destroyable.

First person is the only view that should ever be allowed in a battletech game.

I think 1st person is the only way to go. You are in a cockpit of a mech, which is 1st person view. I have always preferred playing this way.

Personally, unless they put in an option for the 360-to-180 fisheye that the 'actual' mechs use, I'd much rather have the option of swapping between the two. All complaints about 'blind spots' on a mech are stupid and petty when compared to the fluff that there is access to 360 degree viewing and that the cockpit view is essentially a backup in case the cameras get trashed. To handle people looking around corners, just occlude anything that can't be seen from the first person's camera arrays or by an ally. Everyone wins.

As an aside, I prefer to play in first person most of the time. I like being able to see my mech romp around the countryside / city sometimes, though.

First-person is the only way to fly.

EDIT: But third-person is still useful for screen shots, especially with a rotatable camera. Wouldn't use it for anything else.

I want first person as well. It adds another layer of mech difference, because some (assassin) would have a larger view than others (hunchback) due to the cockpit arrangement.

Great point. I'm going to make sure we take this into consideration with our design.

Cannot explain how much this means to me. Thank you.

And for the record. As far as the "sneaking up behind an enemy" crowd goes. It has been stated (as has been mentioned) at several points in Battletech canon, that the "1st person cockpit view" that many of you seem so set on, is not what a Mechwarrior necessarily will see anyway, and that rather, a canon Mech cockpit has a viewscreen that compresses a 360 degree field of view onto a screen in front of the mechwarrior. In fact, some mechs are not designed with the traditional "glass-canopy" cockpit at all, and rely entirely on what appears on an internal viewscreen (if I remember correctly).

That being said, I wouldn't have a problem with a system that only renders enemy units visible if they would be visible in 1st person, or something like that, regardless of which perspective you choose to play in. Like I say, this isn't about an advantage over other players, this is about making a game that is playable by all fans of this game, and I know I for one, have been waiting a long time for this game to come along.

I think you might have confused "First Person View"

For clarification, 1PV is basically mapping what the in-game player sees directly onto your screen. The player's field of view takes up your entire screen (so things outside peripheral vision cannot be seen)

Placing a monitor in front of said player which provides him with views outside of what he can see is STILL first person (you're still viewing from the pilot's current location in the cockpit), you're just viewing camera feed content that is taking point of view from different locations on the Mech.

No, not confused really. Just pointing out that in the game canon, it would be unlikely that a mech could sneak up behind you anyway, since what is seen inside a cockpit isn't merely what you see "through the glass". Also that if memory serves, there are even some mech designs that are designed "sans canopy" meaning that the mechwarrior sits in an enclosed pod that has no canopy to look through what-so-ever, and relies entirely on an internal viewscreen. I bring this up merely to highlight that if we want to stick to 1PV strictly, in the name of "realism", that it wouldn't necessarily look how it seems to be imagined by many people in the thread anyway, according to multiple canon sources.

Therefore, why not have a 3rd person view? (not to mention what other posters had pointed out, that I hadn't though of until reading said posts, but the potential for sweet player made movies of Mech combat is something that I'd hate to lose access to).

I always liked the idea that players were forced to play 1st person so everybody was on an equal footing. But is true that a third person angle wouldnt take much technology to accoumplish.

There are plenty of ways to accommodate screen shots and videos. I am hoping the devs will find those that don't compromise the feel many of us are hoping for.
