While I personally prefer the idea of 1st person views, from an immersion stand-point, sadly, a lot of the time I am unable to play using it, since I'm one of those sad individuals plagued by chronic motion sickness brought on by shaky/wobbly 1st person views, or hand-held camera footage.

I tend to prefer 3rd person more out of necessity than out of any sort of realism/immersion considerations, and while there are the odd 1st person perspectives that are well presented and smooth enough to play with, I certainly hope that there is the option for 3rd person at least, in-case the 1st person once again proves to do me wrong.

Great point. I'm going to make sure we take this into consideration with our design.

I think the biggest thing is that it be the same for everyone. I'm great with a first person view - love the feel of immersion, and for a lot of game design reasons I can see why you would want to keep the player inside the cockpit. However, if there is the possibility of playing from a third person view, you can rest assured I will always use it - as it's just a clear advantage.

If they do require first person view for the entire game, I would hope that they'd provide battlefield record cameras for each player, so you could come back and watch the battle after the fact from an observer cam. After all - sim or no sim, this is still a game, and I want to be able to see my mech in action.

1st person only is great, but there needs to be consideration for people with motion sickness.

Nothing that effects me. Always played in 1st person for mechs for as long as I've played with 'em. :)

That said...

Coming from other games that use 3rd person views, one of the most effective ways I've seen of stealing the advantage from it was making is so that individuals that they (or allies) cannot see do not render. That way, if someone sneaks up on you, they're still sneaky until they start shooting or are detected in some form.

Nothing of value was lost when MWLL disabled third person. I'm okay with no 3rd person in MWO. In urban combat, it'd bring up stupid things like wall humping (like in Planetside) in third person so you can see around corners.

I hope they keep it first person perspective mandatory.

The problem in having a 3rd person option, is that it isn't really an "option" most of the time. It doesn't take a genius to see how 3rd person is better from a tactical standpoint. And knowing you're putting yourself at a tactical disadvantage purposefully by forcing yourself to stay in 1st person, when you know that 90% of the competitive players aren't going to do the same, well, it stings a little.

If they do implement 3rd person, I certainly hope they find some way of not making it tactically superior to 1st person. If that's even possible. I mean, more field of view is more field of view...period. Maybe being in 1st person gives you access to additional instrumentation that the 3rd person users don't get access to? Something needs to balance this out...

looking at World of Tanks.... where there is 3rd person and 1st person, i would say 3rd person is a major mechanic, as u can rotate the camera independently of the torso (turret) so u can look around you without turning.

in "real" mechs, the pilots have a 360 view compressed in front of them so they can "see" behind. but that is not feasible in computer games, so an option to see all around without turning the mech is necessary.

First person 1 life 1 death is the only real way to play this game seriously. 3rd person and multiple spawns are for the arcade players or when I've been drinkin.

Cheers

3rd person can only work if it doesn't provide tactical advantage over 1st person, as is usually the case when you can peak over hills and around corners normally obstructed in 1st person. Otherwise a 1st person only type system is the best way to ensure fairness amongst the players.

I suppose if the 3rd person camera can properly occlude enemy assets when not in direct view then it can keep that fairness and let the choice be up to teh players.

Glad to see I am not the only one who loves first person and doesnt want to be screwed over by third person.

Hey motion sickness people! Check this out! http://xbox.about.co.../a/vgmosick.htm

I don't want you not to have a good time. I just don't want our good time to be made less entertaining because of your limitations.

yeah, 1st person only should be best imo.
It should be a sim, where you as MechWarrior in your cockpit is responsible for your actions, and not a 3rd eye floating around corners.

3rd person should only be an option if the camera is fixed close to back of the Mech, and not floating around.

I only play MW in first person. More realistic and I can see my teammate's/enemy's 'mechs so plenty of 'mechs to see.

As long as there are chest high walls and regenerating health, I'm okay with it.

I hope the devs stay with 1st person. 3rd person has no place in a MechWarrior game in my world.

3rd person would be good for recording a movie..... Yeah? So why not have it.

It won't be too complicated to do first-person with the camera still and cockpit not rendered.
