I've never understood people who do that. 100-ton Mechs in general are crit limited, not weight limited. An XL engine exchanges much needed crit space for useless (due to a lack of crits) extra weight, while simultaneously making the Mech more vulnerable. O.o

speed, actually. take the 2xgauss/2xPPC build for example, you run into weight limits faster than crits. just try to build that wirh STD and XL.
But yes, XL in the crab is risky. worth it I doubt but I'm still testing.

If you're I a brawl build bring the std. Sniper, go xl.

Speed? Don't need to be fast if you communicate well with the team (yea right) and have solid plans.
I just use the stock engine, it ensures I show up at just the right time

I think the people who run XL engines in assault mechs, are people who don't realize assault mechs are not for them. They would be far better off in Heavies than Assaults, but they just haven't come to terms with that yet.
I hate Assault mechs and when I play them for whatever reason, I fight the urge to throw in an XL. I want to sooo bad because they are so painfully slow.
That's how I know I am not an Assault pilot. I just don't have the methodical patience and press planning necessary to pilot a land slug.
So, if you must XL an Assault, might be time to look at heavy mechs.
P.S. Victor excluded, but it has more in common with Heavies than Assaults anyway.

There are many XL Assaults coming down the timeline MieSoo... Just saying.

Sure, but still not sure it is wise to run unless they have Victor-like properties.
Also If the timeline includes IS XLs like that of the Clan's XL engines, I could see changing my point of view (Light Fusion Engine??).
With the mechs and engines the IS has now, I don't think I'm ready to change my opinion.

That's an interesting perspective...I've found that a STD 300 allows me to position effectively enough, and that the XL generally isn't worth the death-by-side-torso, but to each their own!

As for piloting it...well, might as well eject right after the match starts, it would save me the pain of actually trying to be effective with it.

If your Assault is geared for long range combat you can give it XL without much issues. In fact, my 350XL, Lurm Atlas-S is my biggest money earner. Can't wait til I get my hands on the KGC-0000.

The 4 ac5 build with both modules and 2 ERLL has done best, with the top mounted lasers I can reach over cover and frustrate people trying to return fire. Still have yet to do a missile boat or dual Gauss. Its not as face melting as the dire but way more maneuverable.

Its pretty darn fast for that firepower. Just don't try to take the dmg or push through.
Funny thing: Nobody expects a XL on the crab so no one actually shoots your ST's when they see you up front. Don't get flanked and you will be mostly fine. Just watch for LRMs because those will thrash you.
The Crab, like the Direwolf, feels extremely squishy. Even with the STD engine. My Banshee feels like it can take a whole more damage than my Dire or my Crab. Maybe I just getting focused more.

Yep. If I see a KGC and a Banshee together, you bet your last cent that I will shoot at the Crab first.

As you wish

You could still take half a ton armor of the legs down to 68 points (or even a full ton down to 60 but that gets dangerous) and fill the last empty crit slot but I have no Idea with what.
Hey, everybody! Shoot that guy's right torso!
