Still, the tool is alarmingly bad.

This happened to me the other day. Go into your MWO folder, and delete the one titled "USER"
Re-installing doesn't remove ALL the game files, the corrupted one seems to be related to the "USER" folder.
Start the game.
Should work.

After my faily reinstall attempt last night (wouldn't patch) I used the Microsoft FixIt tool shown in that link. It fixed (pick uninstall MWO through the dialog options) some registry settings or something that don't uninstall easily and then did regular uninstall to get the rest. Reboot, reinstall...worked fine and patched normally. So, last night the game worked and I applied my usual settings.
Come back to play today...get the same client needs a patch message it had before. Back to square one and can't run the game.
The only thing on the link list I hadn't tried was changing DNS server settings in my connection TCP/IP settings. So I did that, set it to OpenDNS IP addresses, flushed DNS cache, rebooted... Game worked! Changing the DNS settings is pretty easy and easy to revert.
So, now I'm playing, but I'm terrified to close the game in case it doesn't work again...

The default directory is C:/Programfiles(x86)/Pirahnagames/Mechwarrioronline
Just so you are not confused, During the reinstall I simply renamed the folder that is Pirahnagames, to PGI instead. This makes the game install in a completely clean/new section of your harddrive.
so again just make a custom directory when reinstalling. It worked for me hope this helps some of you. Obviously there's still a chance your game can break again until PGI fixes the patcher or what ever is breaking the game.

Nothing else worked at all.

I turned off Avast Internet Security's Secure DNS feature. Works every time now. Other users in the Avast forum have stated similar issues with the Secure DNS since the last patch. Hopefully they come up with a fix at some time so I can turn it back on. But if your AV has DNS filtering or something similar, try disabling it and logging in.

.
I also got the bug again , after reinstalling to a new location. I then ran the fixer tool twice once to get rid of the bug a third time. now I've gotten the bug a fourth time been running the repair tool most of the night trying to get it working again . I've now lost 10-12 hours of the challenge time to dealing with this god d**n bug. I would have already had my 30 points for the challenge had it not been for this bug.

At present the Space Pope has had the patch feedback loop bug occur three times in the last week, despite following all the provided instructions.

Edit note: Now that I looked at the User folder, I dont see how this relates to the missing pak issue. No paks in that folder. Only settings for weapons group and profile stuff.....

Friday, I reset the DNS settings and it worked.
Yesterday, I reset the DNS settings: Nada. I run the repair tool: Farks up the game even worse to where it won't even launch to login. So I do a full reinstall.
This morning: Log on fine the first time, now back to "Please shutdown and run the patcher."
$#1='s broke, yo.
