I'll be on my gaming community's TS3 server. I've used TS3 for a long time and have been happy with it. If there is anyone else considering it, remember that you can host a server on your own PC and it was free as long as it wasnt being used for commercial/profit. Not 100% sure if that has changed.

For those worried about 'spies', just setup the channel permissions correctly and that should never be an issue.

I am a big fan of Skype as well but I always thought the CPU usage was too much. I dont use it for gaming purposes.

Its free for up to 8 seats...

Coincidentally thats two lances.

The Black Widow Company (Bravo Whiskey Charlie for MW:O) uses TS3 for our comms. For us, TS spies aren't really an issue. If you have more than one channel, just restrict unregistered users to the Default/Lobby channel and run your operation comms in their own channel.

Mumble is really great. It's cheap (a few cents or dollars per month depending on how large), easy to use, has an overlay, and has great sound quality. I see that most people like TS3, but I hope more people give Mumble a shot.

Err.. I double checked the the EULA for an unregistered Non-profit server and it says a max of 32 slots.

You'll have to forgive me - I've dealt with infiltrators from the Goons and others in EVE Online (not singling out the Goons here - just can't remember any of the other organisations) where they'd sign up with a unit and then leak information to their rivals.

Shouldn't get any of that here, given the style of play though.

Skype: designed to be the only thing running (near enough) on your machine. Certainly not expecting to be squashed into a small amount of resources by a game. I'd avoid it, personally - any of the other three are designed for streamlined comms.

Mumble: Just didn't like it.

Vent: built in overlay for my G15 keyboard and pretty streamlined. Current favourite, but that's because I use it when I play Blood Bowl online...

Teamspeak: An old favourite - we used to use this all the time in my EVE Online and Arma 2 days. Have the facility to run my own TS server if desired.

Teamspeak 3 is the voip of choice for my club, and it is an EXCELLENT program.

If you haven't tried it, you should. Very customizable now.

I set up a TS3 server on my HTPC as soon as I saw that there would be no in-game voice chat. Been using it instead of Steam's chat when I play WoT and other stuff with my brother. Easy to do, hopefully I can drop the IP address and password easily into pre-game chat for others on my team to join up :)

Yes, one minor request would be the ability to copy information into chat from elsewhere - comms details in particular. I know it's a basic thing, but some games either don't allow it or make it harder to do so.

Skype or Vent. Since I only want to deal with raging nerds that I know :)

I prefer vent or teamspeak - tried mumble and hated it.

Most likely vent - TS 3 makes it too easy for spies with the ability to log into two servers simultaneously and switch quickly between them. Unless they've put safeguards in against that kinda thing, of course.

Hey BF,
I kinda agree with the security concerns but read it the opposite. I'm a clan leader in World of Tanks. We for a long time ran a 100 slot Ventrilo server to service our Clan Proper & our Academy Team. I found Vent to be very intuitive & easy to operate but just a bit lacking on the smarts. Not really possible to personalise the appearance or performance of the vent server but the big minus is anyone dropping into the top room (for us it was our Diplomacy Channel) & instantly seeing how many players from your clan were on before deciding on a possible assalut or alternate action. It happened to us ONCE.
I've now swapped us onto TeamSpeak3. Clearer comms, still lightweight data & importantly, we've set up the server so that any visitor sees only what we want them to see which is basically nothing.
My only regret is being a tight wad & subscribing to a cheaper provider.. had too many server shutdowns (4 in last month) so will be swapping server providers to Light-Speed or similar soon.
Been keen to investigate Mumble too, but I think I got too many dum-dums in our clan to expect them to digest ANOTHER comms system!
Anyhow, our TeamSpeak will be open to anyone who wants to come and Lance up!

Mumble, open source, least latency(almost ping latency), excellent program.

I may have to just rent my own VPS and run a murmur server on that.

I've got them all installed and they each have their own minor advantages and disadvantages. I still haven't seen the "perfect" VOIP program for gaming, but I'm sure that's just because of subjectivity.

I personally don't like using Skype for gaming, too many people will just leave their mic open the whole time.
Ventrilo has a bit more latency if dealing with overseas people, but it's not a big deal otherwise.
Mumble works just fine. No complaints there at all, except it might be the least popular out of the three main ones.
TeamSpeak3 is a major improvement over TeamSpeak2, has some great features, and is what I'll most likely be using for MWO.

I really hope MWO never has their own VOIP program, just because the sheer number of idiots on the internet means you'll run into someone that you really don't want to deal with spamming garbage all over the place. You'd have to give some sort of moderation access to the lance commanders, and that could possibly be abused. You'd have to be able to mute any morons and constantly have to explain to people how to mute them. You'll have tons of customer service/support issues of people whining about what some meathead is doing/saying over the VOIP.

Then you have the issue of channels. 12 vs. 12 gameplay... two channels of 12 people each? That's just begging for crosstalk. 6 channels - three channels of 4 people each, per side? Then you'd have to navigate between channels if you're commanding the entire lance? Just not a feasible setup. It's just way more problems than it's worth. So much easier to let players handle their own VOIP and police their own radio discipline.

Having all three is definately one way to do it. I do currently use vent in my WoW raid group. Can't hear half the people, but thats what everyone else uses.

Depends which team I'm fighting with as I use most voip systems atm. Hopefully not much mumble as it hogs resources and I've never really seen any advantages to date that would help in a game needing adhoc access rather than strict access security.

That said ... I'm not sure I'm ready for the horror of trying to fast explain push to talk and voip setup to adhoc players that don't normally use them. I have to do that already for our alliance in Eve Online but at least then its the same people each time. ;)

Its kind of interesting to see Team Speak pull ahead in the poll. A positive sign I say.

I have used TeamSpeak and Vent, and to be honest they are both about the same with quality and convenience, though Teamspeak definitely has more bells and whistles. They both provide a good service that in online gaming is a must.

That being said, they should have some sort of ingame voice or at the least chat. You should be able to tell your team what is going on around you if you are just two out of twelve and no other way to communicate.
